I'm not the type of guy that minds grouping or PvP play but I'm very busy and don't often have the free time to play for extended periods so I rarely try to group, more for the sake of the other groups members than myself. I've tried both WoW and EQII and liked them both and found them to be very solo-friendly games but I found the community in WoW a tad childish. Are there any games out there that would allow a very casual solo player to still experience most of the challenging game-play and a mature community at the same time?

LotRO I suppose, but the real challenge might be in finding a fantasy MMORPG that isn't solo friendly these days.

Anything still in development that looks good. I was thinking about giving Lotro a shot but realized they didn't have a Trial. Might still buy the game for the free 30 days anyway but was wondering if anything good is coming out in the next 6 months to a year geared towards my interests
I have always found that Role-play server tend to be more mature, they certainly have players that are old (I think my current guild is mostly over forties).
While I wouldn't say WAR was solo friendly, it is easy to join goups. Groups are mostly open, and a quick button push showes you the groups in your area (by defination, they are welcoming other players). LoTR was fairly solo friendly, although generally you need some help to do epics and certain quests. Personally I found it slow to advance, but it does have a lot of cool features.
Since that's the only two I have been playing this year, I can't comment on the rest.
As much as I hate saying it - Warhammer Online would be a good choice.
Best of luck. =]
Thanks guys, and girls. Like I said before, I have absolutely no problem grouping and enjoy it quite a bit but often can only play for short periods of time and find the grouping aspect a little unfair for the other members if I can't remain for the duration of the quest(s) etc. I'm essentially looking for a game that will allow me to solo and enjoy most of the game's features and then when I have extra time on the weekends I can group for the more intensive content. I'm glad to here WAR and LOTRO seem to fit for me as they seem to be the most impressive games that I've researched lately.
Runes of magic and AoC both works fine. Unlike all other named games are RoM free so just test it and see if it works for you.
And I see why Eq2 worked bad for you, it really only shines in group play.
Guildwars might be worth a look too. It is not a bad game for both casual PvP and PvE.
I've tried GW when it first came out and again after Nightfall but I just couldn't get into it at all. The world seemed so restrictive
I suggest you try Atlantica Online. Its Free and Solid. You can casualy play it with no problem at all. You can easly solo and the game has an auto-run feature that auto-runs you to every npc/quest npc or towns you allready visted.Crafting is very easy to pick-up.The market is also easy to use.you can teleport between towns.
You have nothing to loose by trying it its free.
Pretty much 90% of most fantasy MMOs are solo friendly ...... better off playing a single player game with ventrillo on.....
I just have to say it....
Darkfall.
