Richard Garriott to make new "Lord British" type game..

ColdrenColdren Member UncommonPosts: 495

No further details other than that.. My guess is it will be an online RPG, but using a web browser instead of a traditional client.

http://g4tv.com/videos/44297/DICE-2010-Adam-Sessler-Interviews-Richard-Garriott/

Fast forward to 7:53 for the statement.

Good interview otherwise, too. This interview shows that RG still "Gets it" with games and is ahead of the curve, even though TR failed. It re-enforced my faith in his abilities. We here might not think games like Farmville are the wave of the future, but the truth of the matter is, for better or worse, it's the direction publishers and developers are going to do next.

.. I can't wait to see what he does next.

I think that Garriot always got it.

I said it before. And many people dont realise this. Tabula Rasa had excellent gameplay. Most games try to have good gameplay but simply can not do it. They do not know how.

Tabula Rasa had it. Gameplay wise it was best MMO ever created.

Problem was that TR didnt had any content, crafting, social aspect, pvp, story...etc

Basically they made great gameplay but forgot to make the game around it :(

So basically he didnt get it then?  TR was a piece of shit simple as that, they blew 10's of millions of dollars on it, and RG fucked t up, he didnt get anything as far as I could tell.

  • Seriously Farmville? Yeah I think it's great. In a World where half our population is dying of hunger the more fortunate half is spending their time harvesting food that doesn't exist.

He hasn't have anything successful for a long long time. I highly doubt he still has what it takes. Sure, he can still talk and may even have good ideas. But that means nothing. You can build a good game without execution and polish.

    He really didnt do much.

But i think it was NC soft error. You know that TR was a fantasy game. And they changed it completely to Sci-FI game.

Who knows when the corporate took over.

Anyway whatever his sin was. He know how to make a good game (if he wants)

I agree.  RG finally found his grove again.  Facebook App designer.  I can actually see him doing mediocrally at that.  Wonder if it will ever be enough of a success though that I notice the finished product is available?   That I still doubt.

BTW:  I should add, in my opinion this means he has officially left the MMORPG / RPG arena. He'll/MMORPG.COM will claim otherwise as no doubt it may contain elements of those venue, but just cause it flaps wings and waddles it isn't necessarily a duck.   It certainly won't be 'our' kind of avain.

Very cool, but will he come through this time?

Have to agree, RG hasn't done anything remarkable in years and I think that in the past there were some people behind the scenes that really helped make him look successful but are no longer on his team.

Sure, he got the glory, but they did all the real work.

Are you drunk? TR had the best gameplay ever but didn't have any game? What the hell does that mean?

What DID it have? Linear dumb quests the WoW-style, and useless outposts without any form of virtuality/progression.

The only sparkle of life i saw was in the instances. They were close to creating interesting dynamic battlegrounds such as base assaults, mixed with sub-missions. There was some hope for life in it but in the end they were broken, unplayable, barely completed... and the objectives were nothing but collecting tokens. So even tho they showed some promise, they were ultimately boring and again too much like WoW.

TR would have been great, but it had to DITCH the whole quest-system and make up a coherent mechanic related to outposts. As i always said, i would have at least TRIED a system of production/trade/housing... players would have to manage trading with the other outposts/towns/factories to keep the outposts alive with turrets, ammo, supplies. That would have given players an active purpose, a goal(owning outposts for themselves and their guilds), ultimately LIFE.

Instead, i repeat, they just gave us nonsensical quests to copy from the WoW-system, and please the themepark retards. This doesn't mean that TR should have been sandbox. Sandbox MMO's provide 360 degrees simulation of life. It would have instead expanded the concept of Planetside with a bit of simcity.

Seriously... we're going to bring world hunger and starvation into this topic?

Sam Kinison said it best way back in 1985:

You want to help world hunger? Stop sending them food. Don't send them another bite, send them U-Hauls. Send them a guy that says, "You know, we've been coming here giving you food for about 35 years now and we were driving through the desert, and we realized there wouldn't BE world hunger if you people would live where the FOOD IS! YOU LIVE IN A DESERT!! UNDERSTAND THAT? YOU LIVE IN A F**KING DESERT!! NOTHING GROWS HERE! NOTHING'S GONNA GROW HERE! Come here, you see this? This is sand. You know what it's gonna be 100 years from now? IT'S GONNA BE SAND!! YOU LIVE IN A F**KING DESERT! We have deserts in America, we just don't live in them, @**holes!"

    -On the starvation in Ethiopia.

-As seen in his first appearance on Letterman.

If you live in a place that is just not suited to accomodating people... move.

Earthquakes...  hurricanes/tornadoes... flooding/lack of elevation... too cold/tundra... too hot/desert... MOVE.

I've been asking myself if there is some inside joke here that I'm missing but I'm going to have to assume that you weren't joking.

So now I'm going to have to ask you...what are you doing about it and do you waste time playing games when you could be fighting world hunger?  It seems incredibly hypocritcal to bash other people for playing a game (any game) when there are people suffering from lack of food and yet you yourself are pissing away valuable time posting on a gaming site and presumably (because you are on this site) you yourself play games.

What do you do in your games?  Do you collect equipment to put on your characters?  Well you know all those poor suffering people you mentioned?  A lot of them lack decent clothes to wear.  And yet there you are spending your time collecting clothes that don't exist.  For shame!  I hope you feel guilty about that.

I'd not say the best, but it was quite a bit of fun. I leveled a sniper and a spy to cap. I'll never forget how much fun base defense against the Bane could be.  But you are quite right, there was damn little content at cap, and the crafting and other systems seemed like an after thought.  I'd LOVE to see someone purchase the IP from NCsoft and then do it right.  But thats not likely to happen, mores the pity.

Rolls eyes... Oh please... You might as well ask how many of those starving people could be fed by the 708 Billion that the DoD is funded for next year...  I have NO idea why people find games like Farmville entertaining, but they obviously do. Different things for different people...<shrug>

In his defense, he's probably a liberal and expects the government to do it all and charge everyone but him for the bill.

Wait a minute!  I thought the government had an endless supply of money which comes from a magic money pot they stole from a leprechaun.  Do mean to say it comes from...FROM US!

Ah, on topic; I'm indifferent to the whole Richard Garriot thing.  Time will tell if he has any good stuff left in him.

LMAO!!! Great quote there, Sam Kinison, funny as he was, was still a realist hehe. For a man who pompously gives  himself his own title, "Lord British", it sounds like the future of his gaming kingdom is going to be in mediocrity. Tabula Rasa may have been fairly uninspiring, it's going to look like an action packed fun fest compared to the sound of the boring stuff he is planning next.

Garriott is the George Lucas of mmo developers.  Both had some great ideas a long time ago, then were exposed as hacks when they used the full creative control on later projects to turn out absolute garbage.

*shakes head* Ah, Lord British, my old friend... He still has this error of thinking that plagued him ever since he stopped making Ultimas, this "idee fixe" that all is revolving around something, something, something online. Social online places... sounds like Farmville from Facebook. Sorry, it may be that in numbers Farmville has a lot of people, and if it comes to money making, maybe that works. But a man like him should not waste his time with projects such as this. British is a good story telling and world builder, and that he should do where it can be done best: in classic single player games. I said so every time he comes up with this "we do SOMETHING online social blah blah" over and over again.

When will he learn to go back to where his real strengths lie and stop fooling around with "visions" of "social online blah blah". *sigh* I fear with such a blurry vision it's gonna be just another flop.

I did not get it. I tried to get it, but I couldn't get it.

RG is saying, you know, people think Facebook app games are crap. But really, they're not crap, they're great games! They just need a better GUI nad some better graphics!

And then he was saying, we released this great Poker game! Because you can play poker on a lot of games, but they dont' look like OUR Poker game! We got the coolest Poker game, Sweet Ass Poker!

But he said, we were making Ultima Online and people said, what, an online game? That will never catch on. But we knew we were on to something, and now this is even BIGGER!

So, I was trying to get over the fact that Facebook app games suck ballz, and that maybe this guy knows something, but I sure as hell can't see it.

I log on to Face Book to play a game, and that's going to make it better?

It sounds like saying, hey you like Chocolate Ice Cream? You know what would make it even better? If we put some Shit in it!

    Doesn't that sound great!

    I don't get it.
