TOR is going to be very very addictive.

I am willing to say that TOR is going to be very addictive. Why? One word to date is anticipation. OMG this game is not even out and MILLIONS of gamers are so patiently waiting until the holiday season for this year for the BIG release. Many blogs and forum writers in the industry have all ready made many predictions stating that TOR will change the MMO industry forever. I agree. I think that after a decade of Meh MMO's that come and gone or are still here Players feel that the need a change and TOR is just the MMO that will do it. I'm am not a rapid fanboi I just know that it is a rare thing in the gaming industry that any game for that matter has maintain the attention of gamers before it even comes out.

One big thing I disagree with in your statement is that so many gamers are so patiently waiting. I think the patience is wearing thin on many of the potential players awaiting a release date.

Other then that I think you are correct in assuming the addictiveness. I think part of the addiction will be the story lines and connection to your character and companions. The hard core PVP MMO folks might not get sucked in but SW and Bioware fans will.

Actually in a recent news article from the web site it was stated that PVP is going to be a huge part of the community.

The main problem with anticipation, is the letdown when it doesn't deliver to the over-hype.

I have absolutely no idea if it will be very addictive or not, sorry.

But I hope it will be.

? The OP and the thread title seem to be out of sync, or I guess I fail to see the link between addictiveness and anticipation.

I'm not saying that SWTOR won't be addictive, but it'll be separate from anticipation, those are 2 completely different things.

The ACTUAL size of MMORPG worlds: a comparison list between MMO's

The ease with which predictions are made on these forums:
Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."

Pretty much 100% of big budget MMOs have around this amount of hype (not referring to the hype meter). Some slightly more, some slightly less, but they all market them pretty much exactly the same way.

Once the game is released, you'll see a billion threads about how it didn't live up to the extremely high expectations of every whiny twelve year old with dreams of the perfect MMO. And the ratings from game websites will be through the roof, easily over 8.0 and most likely up to 9.8. These ratings will not reflect on the actual game because reviewers will only see the extremely polished beginning levels and extrapolate from there.

But addition has almost nothing to do with hype. :/

    Sarcasm is not a crime!

Expecting it will be addictive. But the only merrit to be given to millions of people anticipating Swtor, is that they think it might be addictive too, it is in no way a guarantee.

To me, the best sign yet is the lack of flak from beta testers; if there would be severe issues with Swtor, including lack of content, instability, lack of depth and disapointing combat gameplay, we WOULD have heard about it all over the web. Yet it seems that most beta testers (that get permission to write about it *coughs*), are very positive. The majority is just very tight lipped. I think that speaks much bigger volumes.

I can only hope it will be as addictive as Mass Effect and the first KotOR was for me. When you suddenly realize how exhausted and hungry you are after an unspecified gaming session that felt like an hour at the most you know you've got a winner.

Oh and specifically for Mass Effect, when you absolutely forget that you're in the middle of a clinical depression and allow yourself to have hope and positive thoughts for once you know you have the gaming equivalent of a soulmate.

    Nailed it right there folks.

    Aren't beta testers under NDA?

Think about it, if you were a dissapointed beta tester, would you care if your access to the beta was cut off?

I personally think The Old Republic is going to be awesome..

Specially after the huge dissapointment that was SWG..

Testers who aren't concerned with losing their access to the beta are generally the ones who violate the NDA and publically post breaches.

So, the theory goes, if that isn't happening then people want to stay in beta and thus they enjoy the game and don't want to lose their access so they don't leak info.

Yes obviously them delaying every September beta test had nothing to do with the massive lag issues and stability issues they had...opps just violated NDA 2 week ban from mmorpg.com

There is why you never hear anything. btw the above is old news and self admitted by Bioware so no ban for me!

  • twodayslatetwodayslate Member Posts: 724

Yes it will, but not for the reason originally stated.  These gear treadmill games are designed from the ground up to keep people crawling back like self-aware meth addicts so they can keep their characters relevant.  The scary part is that Bioware is actually smart enough to refine Blizzard's near-perfect hamster wheel into something more.. medical-grade.

Wrong the definition of the word addiction is:

The condition of being habitually or compulsively occupied with or involved in something.

So by this standard going to the games forum community everyday or talking about it on other forums such as this one or even thinking about TOR is the very form of definition an addiction to anticipation for TOR.

But that's only a good thing, no? Shows they're trying to fix the known issues before letting more people onto the set.

I plan to play both, i suggest you do the same as both games are looking to be absolutely brilliant in their own way.

Actually I had no issues when playing swtor, only some people had lag issues. Also Ive played every mmo, and yes handdown swtor is the best of all of em(except eve). Also the current beta is only 2/3 of the game, there is still a few more builds so dont listen to the review on betacake.

I say no based on fact. It is physiologically, and psychologically impossible to be addicted to video games. You can become compelled to play them and then lured in by the compulsion. But there is no drive to play that games that is triggered by addiction, which is caused by a chemically induced neorological dependency.

Swtor will be compelling and I will spend many hours playing it, but It will never require the same neorological dependency as something addiction forming like smoking.
