That's right, Dell is releasing the Dell UltraSharp 27 Ultra HD 5K Monitor with a resolution of 5120 x 2880, which is 4x 1440p, for a mere $2500. This monitor will push just under 6.5 million more pixels than 4k monitors, which is an impressive jump and should look very interesting on a 27" display!

Seems monitors are taking a huge leap in pixels as of late.

Don't worry.. the price will drop dramatically in a year or two.

By the time 5k is relevant the prices will be as low as a standard 1080p monitor.
lol $2500... for a monitor.... right.....
Remember " Build it and they will come " someone is buying this or it would not be built.

gese, I haven't even got caught up on the whole 4k gossip yet. I am thinking about putting a new rig together soon. Is there anything to know when it comes to 4k monitors let alone 5k? Do games even take advantage of that resolution yet and is stronger hardware required to output to these increasingly larger resolutions!?
My current monitor is going on 7 years old and just goes to 1650x1000 or whatever so it stands I'll need a new one.
Ya know you smart people are a pain in the ass.

consoles = walmart gamers
PCs = Porsche gamers.

If the game engine isn't stupid about hard-coding in monitor resolution-related stuff, it should be able to use any resolution that the video drivers and monitors can handle. But being able to run at 3840x2160 or whatever is not the same as laying out stuff intelligently at that resolution. In particular, many menus will probably feel very, very small, as they're built to use a fixed number of pixels.
You should also realize that ultra high monitor resolutions put a huge load on video cards.
That's the way a lot of the inexpensive 4K monitors are being made, they are two distinct LCD panels in a common bezel.
We have dual-link DVI for driving higher-than-supported resolutions on DVI, I am sure they can come up with something similar for DP or HDMI. That, and the inexpensive 4k monitors right now are only 30Hz models, so I wouldn't be that surprised to see this is capped at 30Hz (or something lower than 60).
As far as the price goes: a monitor lasts several years, and usually several computer builds. I am not afraid to spend a bit on a good quality monitor, because it's typically going to last longer than the computer I have it hooked up to. That doesn't mean I want to just throw money at it, and $2500 is a bit steep for a monitor for me, but I've paid upwards of $1000 for monitors before, and I feel I have gotten my moneys worth out of them every time.
That being said, it's about time we start to see pixel counts go up again - they got somewhat stagnant there when panels at 1080p became all the rage and they just kept making the diagonal larger due to repurposing TV panels rather than actually making a computer monitor.
Thank you Apple for starting to increase PC monitor resolutions again - I firmly believe this is mostly due to the "Retina" marketing, which brought attention back to screen DPI.
We are finally seeing GPU manufacturers start to push their silicon to go past very subtle but computationally intensive effects and "GPU Compute" scores, and back to a pixel-pushing race... the next couple of generations of GPUs expect to see some cut-throat competition come out about 4k gaming (we already see the early marketing blitz on the R9 285 "Ultra-Resolution" tagline).
Haha thats a good one. Here is another one.
In a couple of years I can buy your Porsche for 1/4 the price and be just as happy. Thats a console.

This.
I bought my Dell 27inch 1440p IPS monitor and didn't realise how poor my rig performs at that resolution in high graphics intensive games.
There isn't a system around today that could play a game on 5k resolution at 60fps.
I think 4 K will come but it is going to be a tough sell. Getting prices down to reasonable levels is the key, because although it will look better, its not going to look hugely better, the way going from standard definition to high def did. No this is going to be a more subtle improvement.
But like the above poster said, there is very little content either as games or video out there at the moment. Until there is a push to get the content out there and getting prices to a point where upgrading makes sense, it is still a ways off.
If I was doing a PC build I would put the money to better use elsewhere and wait for 4 K. It not really going to improve your gaming experience that much.

not even close.
Its more like 'I can buy a Honda Civic and still get where I am going'. In a few years your console will be more like a bicycle compared to what PCs can do

4K TVs went from $10,000 to $2000 in a little over a year.
The take away from this is not to rush out and buy a 5K monitor. The take away is in a few years 4K+ will be cheap and standard AND higher resolution will be possible as well.

Somebody, somewhere has better skills as you have, more experience as you have, is smarter than you, has more friends as you do and can stay online longer. Just pray he's not out to get you.
They did release that to get full resolution you have to run on 2 DisplayPort, or you can drop to typical 4K one a single DisplayPort.
Aimed for photography and graphics editing, so yeah, I wouldn't be surprised to see it limited to 30Hz.
