Forget Destiny 2, there’s a new (old?) loot shooter king in town and it’s Tom Clancy’s The Division. It’s been a slow burn and a tumultuous journey for The Division, but Ubisoft seems to have finally been able to realize the game’s potential with the game’s latest (and massive) free update, patch 1.8.

That's really not accurate. You're shooting heavily armed criminals and malcontents who are trying to profit off the misery around them, killing and looting for fun, and / or attempting to spread even more chaos to keep the city crippled. There's even a faction of pseudoreligious nutcases running around 'purifying' everyone with bullets and flamethrowers.

The regular people just trying to survive are the ones you're helping. You can even give them supplies you've found, like water and medicine.

Really because last time I checked you knew who the "criminals" and "malcontents" were by their clothing alone (like wearing a hoodie) and you even had to shoot unarmed people who weren't doing anything wrong in one mission.

Is this for real?  Dude, it's a video game.  It creates an environment to explain why the folks you're fighting deserve to be fought, which requires a certain suspension of disbelief, just like pretty much every video game, movie, or TV show ever.

I agree. Moralizing and social issues have no place in game discourse unless the game in question explicitly, intentionally is placed within that discourse by the developer. Outside social conversations certainly have no bearing on game quality (of which the Division is lacking for other entirely different reasons).

First thing I've tried to do in every game ever with NPC's wandering about is try to kill them. Especially the wee children.

The game simplifies things by having each faction wear a specific outfit so the player can easily identify them. It certainly isn't demonizing a certain style of dress, it's a concession made for the sake of game play. Besides, last time I checked members of gangs in real life wear certain colors and styles of clothing to show their gang affiliation, so it's really not that much of a stretch to begin with.

As for killing unarmed people, I don't remember that mission at all. Was it part of a DLC? I only played through the base campaign.

I've never played it properly but this has convinced me to grab it the next time it's on sale. I think I'm getting bored with Destiny 2 because I'm starting to look at other games. I'll be trying Warframe first, since it's ftp.

I like to have a quicker, loot-based game like Destiny, Diablo, PoE, Grim Dawn or Borderlands and a main 'proper' MMORPG on the go at the same time.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

That rule would save me so much money.

It's been fantastic, especially with the global event going on now.

I thought it was dumb to go up against Destiny 2's CoO DLC, but it's ending up being perfect. CoO is so underwhelming and Bungie's handling of the game so disappointing, but here's Division with a bomb-ass patch to pick up the slack and show that despite its earlier troubles and some long delays between patches, that it can still make some kick-ass content and improve the functionality of existing content. Been having an absolute blast in the new zones, finally finding groups for Underground, and jumping into the global event for the first time in a long while.

Well, it's a 2 year-old game (just about) and it looks like the update vaulted it into the top 20 on steam charts, so I don't know what all this talk of saving is. If nothing else this statement is a great illustration of the difference between now and a decade ago, scratch that, 5 years ago. What's the bar for longevity?

I've been playing the latest free expansion and they keep making it better and better.  I'm enjoying this game a lot.  It's nothing to plan to play for an hour, look up and three hours have passed.  Great support for solo or group play, PvE or PvP.  Very good tactical shooter.

I passed that mark so long ago. Part of the reason is that I have so many to play through now I can't get to them all. I have 230 games on Steam and 150 on GoG. When I look at a sale now I have to check if I've already bought the title or not.

I do flex and break the rule sometimes. I bought Tomb Raider and I know I won't play it in the next month, but I've wanted to play it throughout the last year when it wasn't on sale so it got an exception.

I've wanted to play the Division but I'm still deep into Destiny 2. I haven't completed Rogue Trooper Redux which is a brilliant remaster and there are two more shooters in the queue. So it got squeezed out.

Doing this has saved a ton of money. I've missed out on a few things, but overall saved a lot and when I buy something I get to focus on it, not forget it. It's contributed to keeping my game playing sane.
Having a big backlog of games works out pretty well.  It keeps me from buying the latest game at the highest prices because I know I can play the ones in my backlog until the new one goes way down in price making it a good buy or in some cases being given away free in a promotion.

This is a traditional good guys vs bad guys game.  If I remember correctly the game won't even let you shoot innocent civilians.

    Division Plot from Wiki.

On Black Friday, a smallpox pandemic, transmitted by a virus planted on banknotes, sweeps through New York City. The disease, known as "Green Poison" or "The Dollar Flu", causes widespread chaos, and Manhattan is placed under quarantine. The U.S. Government activates sleeper agents in the population who operate for the Strategic Homeland Division, or simply "The Division", to assist emergency responders, now called the Joint Task Force (JTF), in restoring order.

The agents undertake assignments to rescue important personnel, help in restoring the base of operations to full working capacity and combat criminal groups, such as the Rioters, common street thugs in New York who generally want to take advantage of the quarantine, the Rikers, escapees from Rikers Island, and the Cleaners, insane New York Sanitation workers who wield flamethrowers and believe everyone is infected.

Yeah. The weird thing while playing though is there is quite a bit of double standards (can't think of a better word right now). I played it a bit when it launched and just recently got back into it (I had the seasons pass I guess and didn't even know). While playing in the story, you are allowed to kill looters who are looting places, then run in and take the loot they were stealing, basically making you the same as them.

I really like the changes they made to the game over time. They made it into what these games should be, full of content, and fun. Destiny and this both had the same problem at launch with lack of content and things to do. But after a while both became full fledged experiences that you could drop hundreds of hours into. When Destiny 2 came out I played for about a week, and for some reason I just can't bring myself to play it because I've done everything. But with this, I'm having a hell of a lot of fun even if the story is kind of crazy and you are allowed to essentially do what the other people are doing and kill them for justice.

The thing about this game that i love over destiny is progression and build variety. It feels more like a mmorpg than a "shared world shooter" because I can jump in group up with people on the fly and talk to them, it feels seamless. The division is a great game and I'm having a blast.

That's one thing I don't like in a lot of games, looting.  In Mass Effect I had to break into a civilians apartment, found out she was dying, and looted her safe before I left.  Also did the same exact thing in a lot of other games.  I could see playing a thief but when you're suppose to be the hero/good guy.
