By the time WAR will come out, WoW will be roughly 3 years old and most folks will naturally be ready to leave.  For example:

By the time DAoC came out, EQ1 was roughly 3-4 years old.  A significant portion of their user base went that direction.

What it all boils down to, is that you can only keep the momentum going for so long before it slows down and starts to decline.  Expansion packs will help slow it down, keep current momentum going for a bit, but the end is enevitable:  Something is going to pass it up and you'll be on the road to the eventual cancelation timeline.  By then, the only thing you can do, is delay that as long as possible.

WoW's had a great run and will still be going for some time, but even it won't be able to last forever.

Considering that orginally Warcraft was going to be a Warhammer game and to this day is still a clone of Warhammer I would say that it is the most likely replacement for WoW players once it comes out.   Conan and LoTR will give it a run for the money as well but Warhammer will most likely come out on top as far as WoW(like) fantasy games.

I prey to god they dont say anything like that. Heres a few examples of what they will prolly sound like:

Sticks ‘n’ stones’ll break my bones, but Gork and Mork’ll smash yer ‘ead to bits if’n you don’t sod off you big bugger!”

WAR wont be that big of a Rival.  WARs combat system is the same as WoW, nothing special, just a PvPcentric version of WoW.
  • CiredricCiredric Member Posts: 723

Ah you forgot one thing, War is based on board game rules, just like DDO and it is being done by Mythic to boot.

I would reserve the bandwagon until we actually see a playable game.

I don't have high hopes for this game unfortunately.

And Warcraft is a cheap knock-off of tabletop Warhammer.

And here's me thinking that WoW was an EQ knock-off

And the Warhammer was a cynical knock-off of D&D

    My bad.

Worst game ever? In my "opinion" the game I liked least (thus worst game in my eyes) was Final Fantasy XI. I feel that it was, without a doubt, the slowest game ever. Maybe some people can appreciate that, which is fine. I can't stand the idea of literally hanging around for 3 hours waiting for a group because the XP system is deliberately created to stand in your way if you're running solo/duo.

I'm all about group content, don't get me wrong. But Everquest 2, for example (my current fave) doesn't stop you from soloin' if need be. It's just that after a certain level, you are better off in a group if you want to make quicker progress. Even the crafting in FF XI was mind-numbingly slow. It all just seemed like one giant time sink to me.

Note I said Warcraft as a whole, not just WoW.
Warhammer was a wargame first and primarily, not an RPG.  D&D may have emerged from fantasy wargaming but took off as an RPG, not a wargame.  Warhammer has sufficient points of difference to make it its own beastie from D&D.

WAR will definately be better than WOW graphicly.... but better graphics also will cut into thier potential base of players also. A lot of WOW players were attracted to it due to the modest req's it made on thier systems, not everyone can afford those nice new vid cards.....

I know that this seems minor to most people but I think that it is a serious consideration....

That's awfully funny, considering the fact that in the post JUST ABOVE THIS ONE, the same apparantely doesn't apply to Warhammer (A TABLETOP GAME) and Warcraft (A RTS COMPUTER GAME).  But, I suppose the rules only apply to whatever fantasy franchise you not jizzing over.

I'm guessing you don't know the history of the Warhammer property or GW's previous relationship with Blizzard.

Yeah, it's not like everyone brings it up at every possible opportunity they can.

The game won't succeed much if WoW sends an expansion around the same time with more pvp stuff or something.

So far WoWs expansion, is just like the original game. Copy and paste areas, battlegrounds etc.

    It's WoW 2.0

Bliz can release all they like...although with Vivendi in Europe not doing to well I can't see too many bucks being thrown at development of WoW. Some cash cow has to pay the legal bills...as I was saying however doesn't matter what Bliz release. WAR arrives I and 50 friends are leaving. Even a bad WAR will be superior to World of Grindcraft imho.

I hate to sit here and toot WoWs horn, I really do. It has it's fair share of problems on a design prospective.

WoW has already been out two years. I'm in a end game raid, and casual
friendly guild with 400 people total including alts. About 70 of these
    people are consistent players.

The ones I talk to on vent are very excited about the expansion, and
have no intention of leaving what-so-ever. I still play beta tests of
korean mmorpgs and stuff on the side, none of them even see the point -
they would rather be playing WoW.

I know there will be people in another year wanting to leave, but I
think that WoW will mantain it's large player base for quite some time. The end is certainly not year, and at the end of the three year mark WoW will still be doing really, really... really well.

You must be able to jump into the future. Can I borrow the delorean? Anyway, some of the stuff is the same, some of it is fresh and new. Just like any expansion really. I agree there should have been more innovative content though.

They plan on releasing a new Expansion every year. I doubt the development team is going to be cut any time soon, they have millions of users paying the bills.

World of Grindcraft? I hope you are talking about end game raid grind. Leveling in this game is super easy, and a casual can hit 60 in 2-3 months.

And for many thats all we really wanted out of WOW... Well that and not having to do mindless instance raid after raid after raid after raid 5 million damn times.

If WAR can manage not to become a raid fest and make due on the promise of a good RvR MMORPG, I think it can very well reach the numbers WOW put up.

Im afraid i might have to say that The Chronicles of Spellborn might be just as much of a competitor. Pity its ratings havent quite reached their zenith yet...
