Why I left DAOC

#1 let me just say that this is my favorite MMO of all time, and thats out of SWG, WOW, L2, EQ2 and GW. I played on Gareth.

However, I think that the task dungeons have ruined this game as far as immersiveness. The shrouded isles are a ghost town. The whole overworld besides noob areas and Camelot(I was an alb) are ghost towns. All people do is grind grind grind TD's to get to lvl 50 and RVR. RVR is great, but DAOC is not THAT bad that it needs to completely forsake PVE altogether. The general consensus about DAOC PVE is that it sucks, but it only sucks because the players make it suck. No one plays Darkness rising, which to me was a huge deal whenever Alb won it. I think that they should get rid of the TD's to spread the leveling and questing around in the Huge DAOC world, though the rest of the catacombs expansion is fine IMO. It does not suck the life out of the game like the TDs.

Other pet peeves were that it was Alb vs Mid AND Hib on Gareth. Pissed me off.

Having said all this, one day I may still come back, though the great PVE of EQ2 may draw me back as well.

Totally agreed on the TD's. Back when I played 3-4 years ago PvE was actually fun, and gaining new levels and finding groups and making friends felt like a great accomplishment and that I was a part of something special.  TD's have completely ruined the sense of community and has further swayed people from the incredible sights and fun times to be had in the DAoC overworld! Personally, I have been running around the old stomping grounds lately by myself just enjoying the old sights I used to love.

Agree on the TDs, they were a stupid idea from the begining.

Add onto that both the recent changes of taking away crossrealm timers from clusters (and clusters, in general), putting promised class fixes on hold for an expansion that doesn't even follow the DAoC seperate races/classes for every realm idea, seeming lack of interest in trying to fix LOS exploits leading to Hibs dominating in seige, and a myriad of other small problems that I've always had (such as pets being able to track down stealthers) with the game and I have joined the 'quit DAoC and looking for a new game' mode, as well.

Although i do agree with the whole TD convo of this discussion, the reason i left DAOC goes farter back then most have even played the game. I started playing DAOC pre SI and continued to play up untill a few months before the release of Darkness Rising. for me DAOC was not just a game it was a community that brough people from ne naition and area of the world together. To me the true downfall of DAOC was with the release of ToA. I never understood why Mytic would come out with an Expansion that would allow a char to be able to cast a spell in under 1sec. With the arivel of ToA the game quickly become a game of not skill but who can hit the quick key the fastest (PvP). And with ToA unless you devoted alot of time to run every and all Master LvL raids and collected every Arty possiable for your char, you were a gonner in PVP. It had even gotten to the point, (probly still is) that on the Alb side there was ONE person with 6 Ice Wizards 1 Cleric 1 Minsteral with all the MLs done on each and i believe he was also RR10 with them all as well. To most of you this would not be a big deal but in truth the collection of chars by this person were all played at the same time!!! (Team Wizzy) he called himself. and the same was in Hib with elds and bards. DAOC was and still is the greatest MMORPG game of all time, but i have to say (from someone who played DAOC pre SI-on) Mythic allowed this game to become nothing more then RVR. I know this is a long post, but to thoses who truly read all this and see were i am comming from or maybe you even believe this is your story as well we can just hope that a MMORPG game will come around that truly brings us back to DAOC roots.

thats all fixed now though. Most people play on the classic rollback servers. The problem is though that its tough to stomach the pve to lvl 50.

I think TD were a mistake for the game.  I warned about it once I heard about them.  However, I think people should be careful on the roseglasses here.  Many areas of SI were ghost towns shortly after launch.  People prefered the slower XP of "easy" camps in the original zones than SI.

Before TDs there were still no groups. ToA and outta control casters has gutted this game. Not instances. That is when people started mass cancelling. Also, imo, bots took a lot of players out of the grouping game, since they just soloed.

ToA is simply a scapegoat.  I am not a fan of that expansion, but subscription numbers went up and stayed up with ToA.  People left for many reasons some of them ToA.

Grouping had been decling for a long time prior to TD.  However, I support the removal of TD.  I sent feedback when I heard about instances and warned of this and yet they still made it into the game.  Would removing the TD solve issues related to grouping?  No, but it would be a step in the right direction.  People group now, but they group in TD.  If you removed TD then people would group and do something else - at least for those that want to group.

I really hope that TD are removed/nerfed prior to the next expansion.

TDs do suck, but if you were there from the begining, you'd know what kind of grind we had to go through to get to 50

I think mythic had the right idea with the TD exp bonus, but overall, they just made 1 expansion (cats) that replaced their old one (si)

    That was the mistake made.

I have a level 49 necro and a level 47 arms. The reason i quit quite simply is becuase everyone i would group with was quiting.I've been thinking about getting back into it but there are too many mmo's out there.

In the end there can be only one. (highlander)

you can still go explore if you want to. Maybe if they increased the camp xp yet again?

problem is less players and its easier to find a group at the same old TD.

I played since day 1 of release.  I enjoyed it greatly up until ToA (plus personal reasons).  I have to say, I really miss playing the game.  I loved being a minstrel, I loved the community, and I even loved getting rolled by VV (I played on Guin), but the combo of ToA and mass exodus left me with no reason to be there.

In an act of desperation, I reopened my account, and to my dismay found 300-ish on Alb.  No one in the noob area running tasks, no one in Salisbury Plains dodging easily aggroed mobs, no one down in Lyon running from goblins...nothing but 50's RvRing.  No community.  I joined a guild hoping for human contact and they said nothing in general.

I don't know about anyone else, but the social aspect of a game is a huge reason for me to be there.  I always knew my job in a group, but actually chatting made it fun.  The dragon raids, dungeon raids, and even the few times we tried to storm the Hib frontier gate are all memorable.  Even RvR isn't fun any longer.

I wish I could get back the magic that was the old DAoC, and I know I won't, but some sort of community besides hardcore RvRers would be nice.  RP is why I started on Guin, but now it exists no where.

I left DAoC long ago, for SWG.  Well, we all know how THAT game went!  Played EQ2 for quite a while, but recently quit because I simply don't have the time.  Well... my wife doesn't and we used to play together.

Anyway...  I have the demo because I wanted to see DAoC again.  I, like many of you have played quite a few different MMO's, and like many of you in this forum, DAoC was my favorite.  Like Scarfyrre, I was on Guin/Albion.  I was a member of 'Guardians of the Realm'.  Some of the best times I had with that game were role-playing in the Inn's and near the Cotswold(?) stables.  I suppose I downloaded the demo and free trial to see if I could recapture some of the magic.  Alas... the zones are barren.  Solo role-play just doesn't really do it for me.  :)  I truly wish they were doing DAoC 2 - it was, and in many ways still is, the best.
