#1 let me just say that this is my favorite MMO of all time, and thats out of SWG, WOW, L2, EQ2 and GW. I played on Gareth.
However, I think that the task dungeons have ruined this game as far as immersiveness. The shrouded isles are a ghost town. The whole overworld besides noob areas and Camelot(I was an alb) are ghost towns. All people do is grind grind grind TD's to get to lvl 50 and RVR. RVR is great, but DAOC is not THAT bad that it needs to completely forsake PVE altogether. The general consensus about DAOC PVE is that it sucks, but it only sucks because the players make it suck. No one plays Darkness rising, which to me was a huge deal whenever Alb won it. I think that they should get rid of the TD's to spread the leveling and questing around in the Huge DAOC world, though the rest of the catacombs expansion is fine IMO. It does not suck the life out of the game like the TDs.
Other pet peeves were that it was Alb vs Mid AND Hib on Gareth. Pissed me off.
Having said all this, one day I may still come back, though the great PVE of EQ2 may draw me back as well.

Add onto that both the recent changes of taking away crossrealm timers from clusters (and clusters, in general), putting promised class fixes on hold for an expansion that doesn't even follow the DAoC seperate races/classes for every realm idea, seeming lack of interest in trying to fix LOS exploits leading to Hibs dominating in seige, and a myriad of other small problems that I've always had (such as pets being able to track down stealthers) with the game and I have joined the 'quit DAoC and looking for a new game' mode, as well.

Grouping had been decling for a long time prior to TD. However, I support the removal of TD. I sent feedback when I heard about instances and warned of this and yet they still made it into the game. Would removing the TD solve issues related to grouping? No, but it would be a step in the right direction. People group now, but they group in TD. If you removed TD then people would group and do something else - at least for those that want to group.
I really hope that TD are removed/nerfed prior to the next expansion.
I think mythic had the right idea with the TD exp bonus, but overall, they just made 1 expansion (cats) that replaced their old one (si)
That was the mistake made.
In the end there can be only one. (highlander)
problem is less players and its easier to find a group at the same old TD.
I played since day 1 of release. I enjoyed it greatly up until ToA (plus personal reasons). I have to say, I really miss playing the game. I loved being a minstrel, I loved the community, and I even loved getting rolled by VV (I played on Guin), but the combo of ToA and mass exodus left me with no reason to be there.
In an act of desperation, I reopened my account, and to my dismay found 300-ish on Alb. No one in the noob area running tasks, no one in Salisbury Plains dodging easily aggroed mobs, no one down in Lyon running from goblins...nothing but 50's RvRing. No community. I joined a guild hoping for human contact and they said nothing in general.
I don't know about anyone else, but the social aspect of a game is a huge reason for me to be there. I always knew my job in a group, but actually chatting made it fun. The dragon raids, dungeon raids, and even the few times we tried to storm the Hib frontier gate are all memorable. Even RvR isn't fun any longer.
I wish I could get back the magic that was the old DAoC, and I know I won't, but some sort of community besides hardcore RvRers would be nice. RP is why I started on Guin, but now it exists no where.

I left DAoC long ago, for SWG. Well, we all know how THAT game went! Played EQ2 for quite a while, but recently quit because I simply don't have the time. Well... my wife doesn't and we used to play together.
Anyway... I have the demo because I wanted to see DAoC again. I, like many of you have played quite a few different MMO's, and like many of you in this forum, DAoC was my favorite. Like Scarfyrre, I was on Guin/Albion. I was a member of 'Guardians of the Realm'. Some of the best times I had with that game were role-playing in the Inn's and near the Cotswold(?) stables. I suppose I downloaded the demo and free trial to see if I could recapture some of the magic. Alas... the zones are barren. Solo role-play just doesn't really do it for me. I truly wish they were doing DAoC 2 - it was, and in many ways still is, the best.
