Is EQ1 really the only good PVE mmorpg left?

I hate EQ2, it was godawful, WoW was fun till 60 i hit a brick wall, now im looking for something new, wanna go with FFXI but i cant find it in stores here in florida where i live and they dont have it for digital download. So is EQ1 my only option left for a good PVE mmorg thats still populated?

Ryzom is a possibility though seems to be quite a specific type of taste.

After switching between countless MMO's, i've finally returned to EQ1, and I'm loving it. It blows anything else of a similar nature outta the water, it took me a while to pick it back up again (returning to a level 52 char which hadn't been played for a few years), but now i'm getting to grips with things it's pretty awesome.

I'd say go for it, it's the only sturdy, well designed MMO out there, with more content than anything i've seen before.

Try Dungeons and Dragons Online. Its focus from inception was PvE. Personally I enjoy the change of pace that combat and the dungeons hold when compared to other MMO's. You are much more active and even have to use your brain on occasion.

I just quite FFXI for the 3d or 4th time because the Economy is F'ed up and you have to have a group after 10-15 depending on your job its horrible unless you dont mind waiting hrs upon hrs for groups just my experiance though. But pls dont waste your money on that one

But EQ blows both DDO and (ESPECIALLY) GW away! It basically gave BIRTH to these games, you cannot beat EQ if you're talking about PVE gaming, you really can't.

I played the entier PvE preview and Nightfall is great but GW is rather different from an EQ-type game.  I am not sure I would reccomend a different branch of the tree in this case.

Sorry in my opinion Guild Wars is much better than EQ.  But I understand why some prefer the persistant world etc.  However as far as I am concerned the class and skill design of GW utterly destroys EQ.  EQ never impressed me though.

The office i'm currently sat in just looked around in shock when they heard "BOLLLLLLLLLOCKS" shouted out at full volume from the corner of the room.

I'm not even going to attempt to argue this, there's just no point.

Ok.  But I just do not think a traditional and rather staid and boring class system like EQ can ever compare to the amazingly rich and complex class/feat system of GW.  EQ was and always has been quite "Ho Hum" to me.  I looked it over when it first came out and I actually continued playing MUDs instead it was so "Ho Hum".

Like I said the worlds are completely different and I can understand how people just prefer one over the other, but EQ's RPG elements are extremely boring to me.  GW's are unique, open, amazingly rich, often subtle, and require some pretty darn good execution for some builds.  Just the variations of different kinds of healing builds and quite different consequences are pretty amazing.  Compared to the "Oh class X has HoTs and Class Y has direct heals.  Oh and yeah spam the heals but make sure you have enough mana" of EQ style games well it is impressive.  From a Boon Prot to a Bonder to Heal spammer to a support prot to a 55hp farmer to a Smiter the monk class alone in GW can do more in more unique ways with more subtle interactions than half the classes combined in other RPGs.  And the game forces you to think about just how you will play yoru character by only letting you take 8 skills, it doesn't take the lazy EQ way out and throw the kitchen sink at you.  It says yeah you have 100 feats/spells now figure out how to use 8 of them together in an effective way.  And the difference between a noob and someone who knows how make/use a good build can be astronomical.  That is tribute to their design.

In my opinion the abstract RPG elements of Guild Wars are top notch.  Very few things rival it and they have achieved an excellent system without just copying the same old same old class system.  And for the most part most of these game make almost no real use of their 3D environment so the RPG elements are pretty important.  And even in that GW is superior since they have collision.

Not even going to enter the debate of Guild Wars vs EQ, EQ was my favourite mmo in the past but I also enjoyed Guild Wars for a different experience.

"HMMM... Well if you can wait for Guild Wars Nightfall its supposed to have fantastic PVE. If not, then i dont know."

    Now that is interesting!

EQ and GW are both crap, so stop whining please... I mean come on, as if class/skill systems had anything at all to do with PvE. It's the story and the world that matters; the exact mechanics mostly just interest those who are into PvP.
