Top 5

OK,

So in the way of  MMORPG's  I've only played Runescape (lvl79) and Legend of Mir(2chars <20). I Beta tested Archlord and liked what it was doing (or trying to do anyway). This has left me hungry for more MMORPG's of a similar nature.  I've just started a char in silkroad and finding it good fun, Although I can see my FPS games and Xbox being left to gather dust from now on.

I'm looking for suggestions of your top 5 games I should look at/buy/wait for based on what I've liked.

      Thnx

Damn you Cleffy, get out of my mind!   I would also add Neverwinter Nights 2 (at least whenever it gets released)

    In War - Victory.
    In Peace - Vigilance.
    In Death - Sacrifice.

As I do not enjoy the typical Asian MMORPG scene which it appears is the limit of your MMO experience (I feel sorry for you), I'll give you some alternatives, both non-mmo and mmo but all rpgs.

--Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - The mod community is freaking awesome!!! A lot of good things have happened to that game since launch.

--World of Warcraft - You have to at least try the free 14 day trial. If you like it, you'll LOVE IT and turn into a fanboi. If you dislike it, you'll HATE IT and turn into a WoW hater gremlin.

--Neverwinter Nights 2 - This is the game thats going to carry me through to Vanguard goodness... hopefully.

--Fallout 2 - If you have never played this game, play it. Thank me later.

--Bioshock - Looks promising from the recent videos/news released. It has many rpg elements (upgrades etc), a intrigueing story and some nice visuals courtesy of Unreal 3.0

Try Last Chaos although I do not know if that game is still in beta it was very similar to Archlord in graphics and grinding .

That's a funny joke. Do you do stand up?

edit: I guess I should post my favorite games. I don't really do many RPG games so these are just my all time favorites

    1) Half Life 1

    2) Half Life 2

    3) Battlefield 2

    4) Asheron's Call 2 (i know it was a grind-fest but it was my first mmo )

    5)  The Legend of Zelda (SNES version)

EQ2 or WoW I think you should try. Also Ryzom might be worth trying but is sort of a very specific taste I think. Ryzom and EQ2 both have free trials, WoW might also somewhere around.

I would like to add another game. Fable

I let my friend borrow the PC game and he really liked it. It is strictly a single player RPG game.

I also have it for the Xbox.

    I havent played it yet.

Not in my top 5 but WoW because it's the best MMO for newcomers. You will be completly lost with most other MMO's.

But what comes to other games:

    Oblivion
    Half Life 2
    Battlefield 2
Heroes of Might and Magic V
    Might and Magic Dark Messiah

    Hi,

Pretty quick and wholesome replies. I forgot to add the xbox games. Yeah, I have played and finished Fable the lost chapters... great game, could have been bigger and online next time.

Oblivion? Well I've been glued to Morrowind since I hunted it down 4 weeks ago, I'm not sure if I would buy oblivion til it goes cheap.

WoW . I have heard it;s a "carebear" Game, but will give the free demo a try.

EQ is on my favourites list now to look at after the others

    Battlefield2- searching now.

Fallout- oooh it looks like jagged alliance- cool

neverwinter nights= new to me - definately looking at.

Half life2 played (and cs source) and finished didn't put it in rpg class though

Been looking at anarchy online and eve gonna D/L them for a quick look soon.

I was reading peoples shouts ingame in Archlord and some ppl were coming up with lineage, vanguard

PSU (?) AION(?)     < plz help with these

    Thanks for the suggestions guys.

I'm sure there's hours of grinding ahead for me.

Thats a smart move carver.  I also buy games when they go to the bargain bin.  I think its about time I get a hold of a copy of Xeno Saga Episode II.

When you said "My only experience with MMOs are Runescape and Archlord beta", my first instinct is that you were going to be one of the foul-mouthed 13-year olds that find their way here often. And now, you've pleasantly surprised me, so I'm going to give you what you want.

I'd say, in the way of RPGs, you can't go wrong with much. Here's my top 5:

      1. World of Warcraft - For beginners, this is a very entertaining MMO, and if you like it, I guarantee you at least 4 months of enjoyment out of it.

      2. Oblivion - I highly recommend this one. If you're waiting for it to go down, I say go for it, but keep your eyes on it. It's like Morrowind, except 10x better, and exponentially better with mods.

      3. Natural Selection - A Half-Life FPS mod with RPG and RTS elements to it, depending on which maps you play. You play as a marine or alien, and have cool abilities like new alien forms and jetpacks.

      4. Dark Age of Camelot - An MMO with some amazing PvP, and a decent community. Graphics are a bit dated though, even with the overhaul that was Catacombs.

      5. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - One of the greatest RPGs of all time. I never even liked Star Wars, and this game converted me. I highly recommend it, and it'll have you hooked for hours with the ever-twisting plot and memorable and sometimes comical character (HK-47 is the greatest).

Enjoy, and welcome to the forums. It's good to see a genuine newbie willing to learn every so often.

    Thanks for that Murias,

I think what first got me about Archlord was the graphics (environment and character and magic), since all I had played was runescape because it was free (and didn't need a graphics card). I have now updated my PC and run an Nvidia geforce 5700 on an Asrock M/board with Athlon chip, so this has now opened up a new world of games, I keep my Xbox mainly for FPS (although I do have Black arrow Ravenshield and Half life 2 on PC) the PC is used for stuff like Emperor ROTMK and ceasar type games. Now that I have seen the MMORPG format in all its rendered beauty I'm starting to see what it's all about, and now I've got the hardware I definately want some of the action. I like the questing and looking forward to the next level for my next bit of armour/weapon/magic, not much into the pk'ing side of things but I don't hate it, I think the graphics are important to me. I'm liking silkroad at the moment but it draws a little late and the areas seem to look bare.

Dark age of Camelot - just looking at hte screenshots now - what have I been missing out on!? or have I arrived just in time.

P.S. Newbie I can handle lol..... but I'm old ebough to have had (and still have) a 48k spectrum.

     To Stewker

Thanks for mentioning Neverwinter Nights 2 that looks awesome.

Rattrap - Dungeons and dragons . !Yes! That's what I'm talkin' 'bout. I can remember playing the original with dice and little metal figures and being lucky to have a great DM who then got our group into Chaosium games (Moorcock- Elric/stormbringer and stuff- mainly percentile dice).

Now all I need is to NOT get stuck into silkroad agin until I've looked at the others

           Cheers
