I think it was a couple of years ago. They claimed that, even though Cryptic cooperated with Marvel in keeping copyrighted material out, some of the players might still make a big, green guy and call him "Tehuuulkkks." That's slightly less stupid than suing the company that makes Crayola Crayons because their customers can do the same thing. But only slightly.
Anyway, other than ending the nuisance suits, I don't really see what good this does Cryptic. They should have plenty of money for a second game on their own (I think the first only cost around 5 million; amazingly low for a successful MMORPG, but that's what originality gets you.)
But what good does a big (and presumably expensive) set of licenses do them now? I mean, how many customers can play The Amazing Spiderman(TM) on one server anyway? Seems to me this will hamper their creativity, not expand it.
Yeah, Marvel got their ass handed to them when it turned out a bunch of their 'evidence' was created by Marvels own staff.
The reason for Cryptic to do this is to get a metric fuckton of money, plain and simple.
SO...the battle lines are drawn: DC/SOE vs Marvel/Cryptic/MS for the soul of the superhero next gen MMO...let the games begin!!!
Umm you must of not played the game for awhile.
Of course you all realize that this is not a deal in spite of the past lawsuit.
This deal is the result of the past lawsuit. This is how the settlement was shaped. Each party dismissed all claims against one another and, in consideration, this deal was struck.
There is simply no way that this is a coincidence.
If that's true, it's sort of like starting out a marriage by filing for divorce.
Oh, yeah. That's gonna work.
Is anyone else worried that they are releasing this 'exclusive' to Vista and the 360?
There goes any support to the PC gamer. With the Vista game performance being abysmal, no gamers I know will be upgrading to Vista.
Not only that, the PC you need to run games on Vista will be able to churn out twice as good graphics as a 360. So basically thanks to their deal with Microsoft we are going to be looking at Marvel making a 2nd gen console game, with a secondhand port to PC as an afterthought and no consideration to their core market.
Microsoft knows this, and that is the only reason they are not making Direct 10 available to XP. I hope the community manages to create a hack or patch to enable DX 10 in XP, because Microsoft has the gaming market by the proverbials at the moment. Even if you get worse performance, have to upgrade your PC and buy Vista you will be forced to do it because M$'s is going to ensure all future games are 'Vista exclusive'.
Oh, yeah. That's gonna work.
I agree with both of you 100%
I really hope they don't mess this up though.

I haven't posted in quite a while... one reason for this "vista".
I managed to get my hands on the RC1 client for vista.
The 64 bit version is a dope so far (due to it's restrictions on drivers/installs etc... it's barely usable but for e-mails and word... :-s ).
the 32 bits version howevere shows great promises, I managed to get a few win95 games to run by using the compatibility mode (yes, this time it seems to work, and very well! Even DRIVERS can be run on comp mode, and they REALLY act like they ARE in the OS you selected... - yes you'll get a bsod, but the point of this test was to check the comp. mode... .
As far as gaming performances and surround sound are concerned, it's not vista's fault... but a lack of drivers... Until drivers are available with all the normal options, it's obvious you WILL have perf. issues (not trying to put whoever said they had bad perfs in vista... but it's not a commercial release yet, and drivers have not been developped for it just yet, most of them are still beta drivers, with core features for now.).
I am not a Microsoft lover myself, but I do have to admit that Vista could be a revolution in many areas (I REALLY like the 3D multi-screen options to see what is running on your machine...)
Example: I was installing 3 softwares, updating vista, running my antivirus in comp. mode, installing some gadgets, watching a DVD (which comes native to vista by the way, no need to install ANYTHING to watch a dvd... just stick it in and open media player...) ... well while doing ALL this, the dvd hasn't skipped once, and I could watch it either by the 3D window manager, or the little preview you get from hoovering your mouse over the taskbar... I could switch from any apps instantly... no slow down nothing!
I honestly do think that once drivers get released with their full functionalities, vista COULD be something quite... interesting... it is true however, that before this happens, we have no clue as what the performances on games will be... but from what I could see on... well.. anything else, I'm do think we'll have a very pleasant surprise
p.s: for the Alen Vs predator lovers that couldn't run it on xp, it runs on vista *pray to god for his kindness ) *

Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
But I'm upset that it's so exlusives for only Microsofts newest systems. It seem to be me more like forcing people to upgrade they perfectly working stuff, just so that they can play this Microsoft sponsor game.
I'm agaist Microsofts attitude, we have new product, buy our newest "thing", because we don't anymore support the our older stuff. I can't understand why they can't make the game work with Windows XP or even with Windows 2000.

Microsoft is expanding its dessiccated hands into anything that it can reach. They can't touch the fantasy MMO's, because there are already too many, so they go for the super hero genre.
So, an MMO for the 360? Seems interesting enough. Marvel Universe? So, you make your own superhero, and then interact with random Marvel heroes? Well, okay. This is sketchy ground they are going into. Only for 360 and Vista? Talk about exclusiveness, and customer loyalty. Do we really want games going into an area where they only work with certain operating systems, or even makes? What if you could ONLY play WoW on an Alienware? Bullcrap, right? Same thing applies to this game.
I cannot hear you over the SHUT THE FUCK UP!
I'm a huge fan of the CoH properties and think that it is a very well made game. I predict that a marvel game might do well in getting new players in but I doubt it will take any players away from other games.
