im thinking of getting this game and wanted to know if its any good. i heard theres no pvp which kinda sucks but that doesnt matter a whole lot. is it alot like eq? whats the combat system like etc..
I liked it, I quit playing because a raid on a town kept me from doing nothing but crafting, which I don't mind, but they WOULD NOT end the raid on this town, which was really dumb in my eyes.
But all in all I think it's a quality title, it has a lot of nice points about it. I think it's definetly worth looking into, as the 7 day free trial was not an option when I got into it.
Give it at least another 3 months, at least, but it should probably be given a bit more time than that. They're still going through the massive "nerf everything" phase of balancing - I'm sure that you've been there before if you've played other MMOs.
Very important things have not yet been added, such as dragon adult hood, that will probably receive a number of "nerf balances" after its release. There are still bugs where NPCs do not spawn at completed buildings like they're supposed to. Construction windows are still bugged. Artifacts, which are supposed to give some sort of bonuses to towns when completed, do nothing.
...and so on and so forth.
On top of it all, A.E. is simply not talking to people. As usual.
Horizons is not currently in a state that I would recommend to anyone. It needs time. Unfortunately for it, in a few months or so we are all going to see some very big named titles released. So whether it'll be worth checking out by then, or not, is highly doubtful. Especially considering how one's treated by A.E. - that is to say, completely ignored.
However, if you like to craft items and nothing else then Horizons may be worth a few months of play to you as long as you don't choose a "dragon".
I also agree with Mysk. I played a reaver, and reavers got nerfed big time. Dragons at this point are an extremely broken race, but when they are able to do everything that we originally were told they could, they will be awesome.
They say that the Right of Passage will be added very soon, possibly in two weeks, but word's been out since early Feb. that they were adding it "soon".
None the less, even if they do add it within the next two weeks, we still have all of the invertible balancing. A.E. certainly is not against sweeping changes as every Horizons player has seen.
Then there's another concern; will A.E. resist all of the whines? If they make the adult dragon as strong as they darn well SHOULD to make up for this absolute mess that hatchling players have had to deal with, then a lot of biped players are going to whine about it.
There are waaaaayyy too many issues, and every one of them are compounded by A.E. being absolutely iron-clad silent about ANYTHING. This is a company that does _not_ talk to its subscriber base. At least not beyond PR fluff.
So yeah, right now, in my opinion, Horizons is not one to get into - most especially if you're looking to play a "dragon" for anything. It is just so not worth the time and money right now.
You all have to realize that this game has only been out 3 months. EQ had its lack of content, and bugs well into 3 months after release. I will admit they need to get the ball rolling on a few things but I absolutely love Horizons. I has a LOT of potential and I have faith that they will capitalize on it. If we are into 6 months from release and there still is no Dragon Rite of Passage, or Storage Silos etc. then I may join your ranks, but for now Horizons is very fun, and it can only get better.

Hey, 7-day free trail...doesnt hurt to download and give it a test drive. On day three of trial myself and am enjoying it so far. Maybe because its new.
It's not a bad game and well worth playing for the free month to make up your mind about it. Ignore all the press that says it's a crafters game and nothing else, the character advancement/combat/adventuring aspect is excellent and you don't need to bother with crafting at all to make money and enjoy yourself. The landscapes and world settings are some of the most beautiful i've ever seen in an mmorpg, from floating islands to vast snow bound mountains and graphics are not too bad, although character models are a bit dodgy. I played EQ for 3 years and i think Horizons looks better on the whole.
Downsides are that there are not enough mobs in the vast landscapes, the quests are very limited, and there is a very small community, also because everyone has realised that crafting is a waste of time very few people do it and there is very little in the way of equipment to buy since there are NO npc vendors selling original stock.
This is a good game that has the potential to be a great game if the adventuring side is pushed by the developers. I agree with most comments however that it still feels like a beta version in which everyone is waiting for something to happen.
I have played Horizons for about a 2 mounths before I stoped my account. I stopped because I was to tied down with work and college and didn't have time to play it anymore. My impression when I was playing the game was really on the high end. I was looking forward to the crafting system to be more elaborite, like they originally planned, but I accepted what they had and had fun with it none the less (and if they do add the crafting system that they originally intended, I will for sure have to try it). I overall didnt have that many problems with the game (and I don't know what its like now), and since I was one of the first players to join, it was interesting to watch how the world changed and developed. I would have to say that it is a fun game and the graphics are very well done (which is always something to impress me) and the music was also. All of the complaining about the game and ranting that everyone is doing is not really needed (its only a game), oh course the game isn't what they said it was going to be, but really what online game has? They have all had there problems to start with and none of them had everyhting released at first that they intended to. I have played many other mmorpgs and beta tested a few. The first one that I have ever played was AC and i found that to be in my opinion one of the best games so far, well untill it got out of hand with bots and such. I have tried worse games and others that have been about equal. Worse being AC2, and if you want to hear my rant about that, just let me know. In all farness I have to say the game is worth trying, I encourage people to play the game, and make your own decisions instead of just listening to what others say, no one has the same opinion.
When someone hands you a orange, make a screwdriver
Played HZ for about 2 weeks of beta, just long enough to get interested. Payed for a 3 month subscription in final and regret doing so. The game is ok for the first month or so but it quickly becomes boring.
1) Too few mobs at the high end. Big problem, too many folks hunting, not enough to kill.
2) No found items. Everything is crafted. Sounded cool at first but in practice this makes hunting pretty boring. "No cool shiny toys to find!!!"
3) Crafting is a huge level grind. Make widget-destroy-remake-destroy etc. Unless you're at the top end of crafters you tend to spend a LOT of time grinding just to 'catch up' because the 'pawn broker' doesn't pay nearly enough to make it worth your while to sell your goods especially if you are trying to level your crafting skills. Which is why there are lots of lower level crafters but few high level ones. Once you hit the 30's it becomes a real pain to level in crafting.
4) Grouping is an all-out joke. Anything can be solo'd so there's no need to group. Grouping generally turns into a simple game of mob-ball/whack-a-mob. Rarely do I see groups taking on stuff that's higher than them. Usually it's just a group of X level killing TONS of same-level mobs at a time. No real challenge just kill stuff as fast as possible so that you get lots of XP. Since there is no reason to try to kill harder mobs (no loot) there isn't much reason to take chances. Leads to a pretty boring 'adventuring' life.
5) Housing - Already becoming apparent that there aren't enough plots to go around. Scary only 3 months into retail. Even UO didn't have housing crowding problems this early.
6) Mounts? No mounts, sorry, hoof it.
7) The oh-so-touted teleportation system is fairly expensive. And gets more so as you level. Unless you game enough to afford it (need to hunt about an hour to afford any kind of frequent teleportation).
8) Combat system is simplistic. Someone said it's complex, which is a joke. There are some styles and some stances but nothing like the complexities of combat in DAOC. I'd rate the combat stances/styles somewhere between EQ and DAOC certainly a step backwards on the 'fun' scale. Even UO has more maneuvers and a greater ability to use them in a given fight.
9) No "shinies". No items drop off mobs. Because of this there isn't any reason to take risks in this game. Why take on tough mobs if you can get decent xp from easy ones? They don't drop anything you need so no need/reason to risk your neck. Leads to a pretty drab game even if you ENJOY taking risks because it's hard to find others who do as well.

I like it, The last few patches have added a bunch to the game. Item Tricking is in, something that shows that at least they are working towards the goals laid out.
Is it perfect, No, but it is getting better, and making some nice steps forward.
I think Horizons is fantastic. Yeah, it does have some stuff stil being worked on- but... i dont think ive seen any good mmorpgs that havent had a less than gorgeous begining.
They are making updates several times a week, improving the game constantly. Ive been waiting for this game for so long and its so great.
It IS the best crafting system ive ever experianced, and they are adding in item customization soon, and the ability to put emblems and things on clothing and weapons (guild symbols) later on.
The adventurers are kinda broken and allot of people are sitting at a high lvl with not a lot to fight, and a few spells or attacks to use. this was adressed in the latest patch, and allot of the melee characters got some love. (chaos warriors and Battlemages) Dragons are also getting some major loving, being handed an epic quest soon that will allow them to fly and become an adult and pick their faction and whatnot. I think this game is really great- but it is still being worked on. Everyone in it is really nice so far.
but if you are hesatant about the classes and characters that seem broken, or have holes in their layout- yes, you may want to wait a little while. Although over the next three months they are going to be heavily working on the system, along with adding in new content. Customer support is getting better every day.
It IS the best crafting system ive ever experianced, and they are adding in item customization soon, and the ability to put emblems and things on clothing and weapons (guild symbols) later on.
UO had all of those things from day 1. You could dye your clothes, make special items etc. You can now even imbue weapons and items with special properties.
This on a game that came out almost 7 years ago.
SWG, while I'm one of it's biggest detractors, even did/does crafting just as well as, if not better than, Horizons.
I will give them that they appear to be working on things but the bottom line is that Horizons was released about 6 months too early. Their rush to release the game may well kill it. People like myself, and others, who tried it out early on will probably never go back because when the new stuff comes out we'll go try that rather than going back to Horizons. Too many broken promises for me.
Stuff that should have been in from day 1 still isn't in and is 'low priority' and things that nobody really wanted get priority all the time.
Great user interface, fantastic scenery and good ambient sound don't make a game fun. The crafting system is pretty good but nobody has money to buy the good stuff (except other crafters). Crafters own EVERYTHING because there's nothing to keep adventurers adventuring. If you're into crafting the game is 'ok' but just 'ok'. It's got a LOT of work cut out for it to become what it could be.
I won't say it's going to die. But it's a shame they rushed it to market and turned a lot of players off with a half-finished product.

Ya... I know that NOW... but AE does not provide that information. When you click cancel on their site, it directs you to the phone number only.
Between using a separate billing company, and using IE as a front end, Horizons feels like a Blue Light Special to me... quality is NOT how I would descrive HZ.
Their I.E.-based login is a huge pain in the butt, I agree. I also think that it is stupid to use it, after one considers how horrible the security of that browser is.
Log in twice to play one character (inpt username/password twice). Then completely close the game, reload the webpage, and relog twice again if you want to switch characters. Grr!
I hate that.
The RoP was just added - this is good but I'm still trying to figure out what this actually means for the player. The last that I checked my thread on Tazoon I didn't have any facts, only moaning.
Hopefully soon I will have some comparison data to determine just how much of an improvement it is to go from hatchling to an adult dragon.
However, the point of my original post in this thread is to give it time.
Every MMOG "has great potential" because of the very type of game that it is. Yet horizons could be one of the few exceptional games. It is up to A.E. to either shape up or ship out. Will they, or will they run out of time? That is, will "the big titles" be out before they show any serious committment to improve?
I cancelled in early Feb. because I disagreed with the behavior of the company and I would recommend that others first watch A.E. and wait for them to improve before you give them your money.
(soap box) I wish that more MMOG players would be a reasponsible consumer and cancel the subscription to a product when they have serious complaints with the company, or wait before buying the product to see if the company shapes up.
Like the problem with "spam" eMail, the problem with receiving junk is directly related to too many people buying the products when the products don't deserve the money.
MMOGs will continue to be junk until consumers grow a gosh darn back bone. (/soap box)
Agreed. Had I had more time in Beta to see the game I probably wouldn't have bought the game at all. It's lacking far too many features to make it truely fun. AE hoodwinked me but that's ok. I cancelled as soon as I realized that the game just really isn't in any kind of finished state yet. I'm keeping an eye on the updates, etc but so far I'm not impressed. I am of the opinion that one of the newer releases coming out this year will wind up being better anyway.
Not impressed with AE at all thus far.

I cancelled my account during January, after about 1 and half month playing. Reason was simple: false advertising. Before I bougth game, I did read carefully official FAQ that was promising allkind great features. Unfortunately, it was pretty quickly clear that game didn't have those great features or features were only partially implemented. After that, everytime when I logged in, I felt that I was cheated to buy game. Eventually it killed my small enjoyment from game - and lead me to make my final decision: I am never going try AE's game again.
I didn't have any account problems or other technical problems (if you don't count huge lag problems) during my playtime. Generally Horizons was average MMORPG. In some feature areas, it was lacking behind other games: PvP, dungeons, mission dungeons, rewards from adventuring, immersion, etc. In other hand, it did have nice class and skill system, useless housing system (but at least it was there), community projects (far from advertised "dynamic world" and advanced AI) and crafting system (didn't have advertised complexity and item customization).
I guess that Horizons might someday be maybe little more than average game - if you give enough time and there is enough paying funboys who still believe to "miracle patch".
"I know I said this was my last post, but you my friend are a idiotic moron." -Shadow4482
i wouldnt buy or play this game at this time, there are bugs and broken quest there since beta. this could be a great game if AE decides to look into player feedback. i really liked the game xcept for a few, what i saw as major problems, not being worked on. they did a lot of nerfing characters that should have been done in beta, theres no customer service to speak of. they give little as i call it cotton candy patches with a few small fast new things alnog with a lot of nerfs, nothing substantal came down for the 2 months i played after beta was over, opps is it really over. if they ever fix the game back to what the game was meant to be i might reload it to my machine and give it a go, but it will take some work on AE's part for that to happen. ill play single rpg or UO again until something comes out rather then waste money on HZ.
I logged back in to give the game another go. Now I can't use Dralk (one of the dragon cities) and I'm trying to figure out what's causing all of the issues.
Joy. :x A dragon character can't complete all of their "quests" without the NPCs in Dralk and the city is so graphically fudged for me that I can't rach any of the NPCs other than a guard and an ambrosia vendor.

(soap box)
I wish that more MMOG players would be a reasponsible consumer and cancel the subscription to a product when they have serious complaints with the company, or wait before buying the product to see if the company shapes up.
Like the problem with "spam" eMail, the problem with receiving junk is directly related to too many people buying the products when the products don't deserve the money.
MMOGs will continue to be junk until consumers grow a gosh darn back bone.

I enjoyed it for about six weeks.
Became a Reaver and done another level to get iron armour and weapon then lost interest.
Couldn't think of a reason to log-in and play after that.
It's a shame because I REALLY enjoyed it up to that point.
