Game Distribution

I was going crazy over this game until I read that it will not be sold in stores. I'm thinking that there won't be enough players. I never see any ads trying to show off this game. The only place I have seen this game is on the mmorpg website.

Tons of gamers don't check the mmorpg and most won't be willing to try out the game even if they somehow venture onto its website. In stores people can talk to the workers and get an idea how the game is. Also, people who just like pirate games might be introduced to the mmorpg market.

Do you guys this the game will be killed because of the internet only distribution?

Why?

No, because if you would actually visit the website and read, youd find out that they said that online distribution is not the only door open to them now, it use to be 3 years ago, but now they are looking at store and online distribution, and they are using game venues to advertise it. such as E3, Q4, and PAX.

I do check their website and didn't see it say this anywhere. They should update their faqs because not everyone has time to go into the forums and look to see them say this. I did check their news and announcements forums though.

As more and more people access the internet via broadband connections you will see more and more game distributed on-line only. Sony is even considering on-line distribution for some PS3 games. I would venture to say that in the not too distant future all game will be available for download while boxed games will dwindle to the point of non-existance. This will be especially true of MMO's as you need to be online to play them anyway.

I'm not sure if online distribution will become more common, but I am almost certain that games selling in stores will not stop well we are still alive. There are just way too many kids who need their parents to go to the store with them and buy them the game. Also, there are still a lot of people skeptical of putting their credit card on the internet.

Actually  I do think wudularch is correct, most likely alot of games will be still distributed in stores, but alot more games are going to make the online option and it is going to do very well I think for mmos.

I believe that Eve online, the #1 ranked game on this site is only available via download.

Since you can't play an online game without internet acess, I'd say online distribution is totally fine.

Online distrubution is a good way to go, if you loose your cd and you can't find it then u have to go out and buy another one. Online distribution you can't loose your game if it is on steam.

SWG- Left after they ruined it
    WoW- Left after 2 years
    EVE- Left after three days

    Greetings Folks!

As a point of clarification, we are exploring all of our options related to the distribution plans for Pirates of the Burning Sea, and that will include a special boxed set that will be available on the shelves of your standard games retailer.

Hope that clears up any confusion!

My viewpoint: I like to have a game box so that I have a DVD or CD in my hand - something substantial and not just a download.

Me too. I don't know what it is, but there's something special about holding that CD in my hand. Makes it seem more real somehow.

You kidding me?  I wish all games just did online distrubution (especially for MMO's).  That way if I go to a friends computer I can just download it and install and go!

I kinda like dvd's too... they just use more space in my tiny flat... *smiles*.

Seriously though, it's good to have the dvd, so if anything happens on your machine, you don't have to WAIT too long to play again... you can just stick the dvd, install, patch... and off you go...

and most of the game, boxed games comes with a few goodies be it maps, posters... in game items... whatever...) I think it's always nice...

AND it's always good to be able to WRAP a gift too... kinda hard to "warp a download" unless you make it on your own dvd etc... but a box .. with pictures.. colors...etc... it just looks better as a gift too IMO :)

Downloads have their pro's too... as somsone said earlier, you can get it from any pc with a connection... show your friends before they buy it... and well... if a download is corrupted.. do it again... if you brake your dvd... well.... you know... :))

Personally, I think both are good... and both "should" be available equally :), but then again, a boxset cost money (packing cost, design of the box, manufacturing of goodies if any, marketting cost, deals with resellers........ and so on...), so I think from a profit point of view, online distribution is cheaper, and has less hassle for the game maker :)

UPDATE: I just noticed that a recent MMORPG article pointed folks in the direction of an old post of mine that lives in this thread.  To further clarify, Pirates of the Burning Sea has since announced a launch date of June, 2007.

As for distribution plans, we intend to explore all our options when it comes time to distribute Pirates of the Burning Sea, but rest assured that we will have boxes on the shelves of your favorite game retailer.
