Are there any left? I've been searching for awhile, but unfortunately, nothing really satisfies me. I'm looking for a good sandbox game, with no level cap, freedom to do whatever you want, a good amount of quests, and conquest style PvP. Does such a game exist?
Comments
Sandbox- Yes.
no Level Cap- A bunch of us figured it out since skill training in the game is Real time even offline. 16.5 years to train every single skill to max level. That would allow you to use every single item and Ship in the game at maximum effectiveness.
Freedom to do what you want- Yep you want to mine you mine, You want to fight you fight. I generally bounce between Fighting, Mining, Manufacturing, Pirate, and Support.
A good amount of quests- EVE does have NPC mision agents but after a while the quests will get pretty repetative. There are also what are called "Cosmos" agents though I can't comment on them as I have yet to train the skills to be able to use modules that they require.
Conquest style PVP- Well here's the player alliance map for this week
Now besides EVE you also have Saga of Ryzom which someone who actually plays that game could give you a better discription of.
I just want something that is fun to play, I want something with a endgame similar to AO, and PVP that actually has a risk vs reward system, not a grind like WoW. Don't care what setting it is in.
Hopefully 2007 brings some good MMO's with the new batch... I'm really looking forward to AoC and Warhammer later on.
Anarchy Online does have a level cap, but it is extremely difficult to reach. Ive been playing off and on for two years, and I still havent hit level 220.
It is certainly sandboxy, you can go anywhere/do anything at any time, surviving the experience might be a different issue though , and character customization levels are very high. An infinate number of generated missions, and many unique quests. The large scale PVP revolves around the capture of land for your guild's Notum towers.
No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

Maybe you should then just try Counter-Strike? There's always more people to headshot and more world tournaments to win
EVE is an interactive screensaver. One of the most boring games of all time.
No evel cap? You'll reach the effective level cap in three to six months or less (by clicking on a book icon and then going to sleep! lol). Nicoli may be correct about how long it would take to learn all the skills for every race but no one does that. Knowing all of skills is practically useless, learning them would be as much fun as watching a TV station test pattern. One race will do you fine, two if you enjoy doing the same exact things a second time in order to be able to fly space ships that look a bit different on the outside than the next race's ships but are almost identical as far as hauling ability, fighting and speed go.
I apologise for not providing a positive answer to your question but I don't think there is one at this time. I'm playing City of Villains at the moment not because it's the greatest game but because it's one of the less annoying MMOs.
Please dont' talk about stuff you don't know about.
Different races have different ships, each ship has it's own special strategical value... even the cheap frigates. Every race has different attributes.
Example:
Amarr Ships - High on armor, use lasers
Caldari Ships - Lots of Missle Hardpoints
If you don't care enough about the game to learn all the complexities of it, then that's ok. But don't talk about stuff you know nothing about. EVE is extremely complex, the absolute most complex MMORPG to date. Nobody can argue that even if they think the game sucks.
A Work in Progress.

You may not be flying something like a dreadnaught but those are specialized ship and anyone who tells you they are "uber" pwnmobiles is an idiot. Something like the Amaar recon ships are as close as you come to a solo pwn mobile and those a) can be gotten in the aobve time frame and b) have their own problems anyway.
For group combat you can certainly be flying a Raven interdictr pretty quick and participate as a tackler/avoider killer in just about any sort of group rather quickly.
Eve is lateral not vertical once you hit about 6 months. But certain roles usch as POS killer in dreadnaught do take a while.
Anyway the game isn't for everyone but it does actually fit most of your criteria
As I said, I Did play EVE, for about 6 months, which is how long it takes to get any good, no matter how much you play. I want a sandbox game where how good you are depends on how long you play, not how long you've had your account. That was the only problem I've ever had with EVE.
Personnally an ongoing game with no level cap allow me to play it, for as long and as much as I enjoy the game. A level cap always limit me and hinder me. I can live with a level cap, but I personnally always been in favor of unlimited levels, especially if you can add nice Sidekick/Lackeys options as in CoV, if the examplar/malefactor system could be equally appealing where the high bee would still progress, it would be even better.
But I have come to terms and to accept that I will prolly never see unlimited levels in a cool game ever again. If I am wrong, cool surprised, but I stop hoping for that a long time ago.
A level cap is to put an artificial limit to make sure peoples work harder to reach it (it is a casual-friendly feature, and this is including all casuals players, even the uber-raiders, hearing them cry and complains with the addition of new levels would prove this point to anyone doubting). I can live with that, but I will admit...unlimited levels would be droolistics.
I rather see a level cap on every zone than seeing a level cap on the whole game (think of CoV PvP zones as to how implement the level cap). On every zone, I can change zone and keep going on. Casuals would be protected and old content would never become obsolete with a level cap on every zone...but that would be another topic, wouldn't it?

Another issue you have with playing time = how good you are is that you NEED a level cap or at least highly restricted areas to balance the fact that people with no life end up with free reign in the game. That or they simply have a involuntary level cap as they run out of the ability to train things that they actually use.
