Important to mention is that experienced MMORPG players and RP:ers should have no problem starting up playing. MXO is heaven RP-wise. My friend played MXO and quit after two days, but he did one huge mistake: he never interacted with the community, just ran his missions all alone. MXO is without any doubt, ment to be played together, not alone, as for all the MMORPGs out there.
Ive tried a couple of games after MXO, but they all have no chance beating MXO in gameplay. Anarchy Online which I downloaded yesterday, is just a laugh compared with MXO (after 30 min of playing).
There is no comparision to MxO and Anarchy Online...even if MxO has change over to SOE. I played AO for a while and I hate layout of the game...so confusing. Got rid of it without any regret. Thank God its free.
too bad there isnt ANYTHING you like about the combat system, unlike SWG's. MXO's combat system is so bad from a pvp perspective that you just want to throw down your headset and scream. the pvp is so bad and boring right now that any form of combat upgrade will help.
Just be carefull what you wish for. SOE's idea of a CU for SWG was "hold your mouse button down and point at things until they fall down". I feel like I'm playing one of those cheap Sesame Street games when I play NGE. And yes, I'm trolling, but only cause I'm lookin for a new game and I love the Matrix world. Do I still have to buy this to try it out? Or do they offer a trial of some sort?
I've been in MxO since November of 2004 (very yearly beta).
I think the only reason that I stuck around for so long is because of the people in the community and the faction that I'm in.
Being part of the community plays a big role in your interest in the game. For all the people that got to lvl 17 and quit, how can you flame a game you haven't experienced to the fullest?
Talk to me when you participate in live events, when you RP with the Matrix characters (a Big part of the game), when you participate in massive PvP battles, when you get to know more than 5 people, when you participate in player events and tournaments, when you learn what a "balanced loadout" is.
Sure the games "grind" mission system is not fun after you've gone through it a few hundred times but "Critical Missions" (event related) let you in on the story so that when you actually do meet an RP person you can talk about something meaningful and not about how shiny your gun is. And grinding missions is not the only way to get XP. You can go into a "construct" which is PvP enabled across all servers, not only hostile, and try to take on a Boss that's atleast 10 levels above you. In my opinion there is a ton of stuff to do in the game when you are leveling up, you just have to know where to look.
This game requires actually talking to people, making contacts, alliances and business deals. If you are starting up in the game, make sure you get involved in the community, don't just run around solo and mission all the time, you can do that in any MMO. Find a Faction, make friends, if you know the Matrix lore RP (most people respect a good RP player). If you came across an occasional "n00b" comment, know that the person saying that is probably not a very mature player. Don't get discouraged just because some person trashtalks, talk back dammit, that's what we all do.
If you want to really enjoy the game, become part of a mature faction, a faction that organizes and hosts events, RP's and activelly participates in the community. They are not hard to find, just go to the offical forums and look for factions that make the most post, factions that post about their own events and help newbies with questions. It doesn't matter what you want to be, a Zionite, a Machine operative, or a Merovingian's follower, there are mature factions for everyone, you just have to ask to join.
Ok, I'm done venting.

You shouldn't have to wait to get to a high level before the game becomes interesting like the lead thread says here. Why should you? If a game is a solid good game you should notice it right from the start and not 15 or more levels later.
It makes no sense!
I was in beta for this game and it sucked. The most boring, repeative and blandest game I've ever played and I've played quite a bit of them.
MxO was personally one of my most depressing experiences. I mean that, and not in a rude way.
I looked SO forward to this game. The PERFECT MMO setting, the Perfect subject license. You just COULDNT get better than what this game could have been ..in theory
Sadly, I started on day one, and gave it a really good go as a very excited and hoping to be pleased fan..only to be really really let down by the tedious gameplay. It served no purpose, it followed no plot..go to this building, do something, go to that building do something...it made me actually emotionally sad to see that this game didnt become what it could have been.
One thing i really really loved tho - was radiofreezion.com. the perfect music most the time for the matrix theme game. Sadly I hear even that is gone now.
MxO could have been great (it could have been a contender baby!) and could have captured a lot of people if they had used the license effectively. Instead they used it as a paint job over an otherwise bland experience.
I don't want to seem like overly protective of this game, it has it's shortcommings, but I just can't help not posting.
The reply by sewash made me do this.
"Tedious Gameplay" - I understand you are talking about the regular grind missions. Yes they are repetitive, yes they are tedious, but they don't really have anything to do with the plot other than giving you a sense that you are actually "working" for your organization. The plot comes in play from the Events and "Critical Missions." I sincerelly hope you partook in a few Events. There is a ton of content in this game that you probably did not see as being crucial or being relative. For example, have you ever ran a "Contact" mission. Did you find out how that particular contact plays a role in the Matrix universe you were exploring. Did you know that "The Sculptress" is responsible for creating all the monuments in the Mega City and that each has a very special meaning? I think that you either didn't have enough time to explore that deep into the story, or you were trying to solo the game and not get that much into the plot beyond the obvious. The "stories" went deeper than just an occasional appearance by Niobe or Morpheus and all the Neo-wannabees spamming chat during the appearance. A lot more went on in the background but not alot of people noticed it or even try to go that deep.
"radiofreezion.com" - This station was (as far as I know, I might be wrong) revolutionary in it's approach. It was dedicated to Matrix Online, all the DJ's were players and they made the experience that much more interesting. After live launch(or was it right before? I don't quite remember) the station was renamed to "Awakened Radio" because they didn't to be seen as biased towards one organizaion only because their staff did have representation from all sides. Not too long ago, the owner of the station decided that they should branch off into other games, i.e. Star Wars Galaxies and City of Heros, and they did that. So right now it is called MMO Radio and they "serve" a variety of different MMO's. I used to enjoy RadioFreeZion, especially late at night, you could conversate with the DJ, request songs, and enjoy commercial free "Matrix" music. AWR brought in more ads, with lots of DJ talk and almost all metal and goth electronica music. I liked the music but was not particularly fond of the talk of the new DJs nor the commercials.
"MxO could have been great" - It was great, (before SOE bought it, now it's just alright). Being my second ever MMO at the time I was very ecstatic about everything in it. This game appealed to me the most out of all MMO's, it had no magic, no trolls or gnomes or elves. It was set in an urban setting, with gunplay and martial arts (I didn't learn about hackers untill I actually got into beta). I enjoyed it emmensilly and still do to this day (mostly due to the faction or "guild" I'm part of), although I'm not really proud of SOE and it's "improvements" that they are planning. We'll see how it turns out. Maybe next thing I know is I'm flaming the game alonside with you, how SOE killed it and all that but time will tell.
That's it, i'm done. It's late, I need sleep, and I have an exam tomorrow. I'll go rest my eyes for a few hours then.
P.S. What MMO is not a grind? They all are, just some dress it up better and make it look fancier. Never-the-less in the end the entire grind is repetitive and boring at some point, but we must get ove that hump to get to those high levels to see what's on the other side of that rainbow. Is it a pot of gold or a turd that the leprechaun left to laugh at you later.
P.P.S. I'm sorry about the long post. Next time I'll try to keep it short.

Wow.. um.. regarding your input on RadioFreeZion.. its totally wrong.
For starters, the person who was running RFZ got really pissed off because one of his friends got banned from the game. So he shut the station DOWN. Two of the hardcore DJ's got picked up by some company and they started AwakenedRadio. It was not revolutionary, there was other internet radio stations devoted to certain games, just not one that reached so many players like RFZ.
AwakenedRadio had two things they wouldn't mention/play. The song banna phone and RFZ.
I think the CU is going to be a complete disaster, and SOE is only pushing it because they want new players. I'd run while there is still time left.
After the two sequels, putting shame to the word "Matrix" is actually quite difficult. Still, they most certainly have succeeded. For an enjoyable Matrix game try "Enter The Matrix".
The games dire, this is the only MMO community in which another player has ripped me off. I think that says more about the failings of the game system than it does the crowd who were (apart from the mad RP set who actually think it was worthing watching Matrix 2 and 3, and believe that they have a plot, and some form of intresting philosophical premise worth discussing at great length) a fun bunch of gamers similar to those found in everyother MMO.
They made a big song and dance of live events when I played, but only told beta players anything about it, leaving all the noobs to miss the action entirely. Very cliquey crowd. Like all MMO's there are no end of nice people playing and a very few lemons.

While the game was so/so to be to call it terrible is a bit harsh. But either way it didn't put shame to the words "The Matrix" any more than Matrix 2 and 3 did.

Originally posted by baff I got to lvl 50 in 8 days of street grinding. Street grinding? You mean mob killing? That's hard to believe. I think you'd need to run hard missions "24/7" to get to 50 in these 8 days. And by mob killing... I've got the suspicion that you actually haven't passed level 10 as that's where mob killing actually becomes pretty useless as a levelling method and you should know that as a 50.
Or I've misunderstood something or maybe committed a fatal miscalculation.
The plot progession is meaningless as you can respec at anytime, never having to make a decision that will define your future. Instead of becoming someone, he maintains the option to be anyone. The anonymity has no depth.
Your actions don't have such an influence on your future of the environment, as your name usually doesn't have that of a meaning in the universe. Fine, that doesn't make the plot progression meaningless. Just because it's an MMO and not a movie or a book, it doesn't mean a static storyline is meaningless. Come on...
Because the programmers were too inept to program in any content, they instead promised to personally show up once a month and roleplay with us. Utterly pitiful. (Especially as they only turn up for 20 minutes and only in U.S. hours (5 am UK time). I tried a couple. Am on screen text message seemed to be about the sum total of it.
Sorry, but that's BS. You miss that what you so derogatively call "roleplaying with players" intendedly is one of the most important aspects of this game. "Roleplaying with us" sounds like it were merely random and meaningless character appearences having RP chats with players. In reality, these are thought-out and slightly interactive scenarios progressing the storyline Each event has an own plot and is a part of the whole, which consists of events, missions, cinematics and some more "media". They don't only consist of Devs logging in as characters -- they're carefully planned scenarios also including puzzle solving and fighting, often lasting and built of multiple, sometimes parallel phases. And they don't occur once a month -- rather 3-5 times a week.
As for your comments on the contact missions -- yes, they're just missions and don't have any uniqueness or variety (or very little) visually or concerning gameplay. That actually applies to contact missions more than story missions. But you underestimate the meaning of the written word, as the mission texts (believe me, far more than 5 lines) are actually the storytelling tool. They're what the missions are about. You can't just ignore that, though it is critisizeable that the mission system is so unspectacular in other aspects.
Thanks for pointing this out. Whoever started this thread really didn't understand the game. At this time I am not playing, but I did religiously for about 3 months, met some rockin people too. That's what this game is about, in my opinion. Meeting new people and gaining levels and such. This game is more of an RP oriented game anyway. I would still be playing if my computer hadn't crapped out on me and I hadn't run out of time to hang out with the people I had alot of fun with.
My character is in quite a few pictures from september of 05, but that was before alot of changes and fixes by soe. I just wanted to spit out my two cents, so there you go. I think this was a wonderful game and still is, I just wish I had the time and resources to put back into it.

- The Matirx is tthe Future so come join the game in its fledgeling days, before the AI changes everything

And who do you base that statement on? Yourself? Others who havnt played the game within the last couple of months?
You can't simply make an uneducated claim that many don't agree.
But meh, this thread is full of hate, misinformation, hired goons and game griefers. I for one will more than happy to see it die.
Lmao. Did they re-write the game from scratch in only two months?
No matter how much you polish a turd, it won't shine.
Of all that is written, I love only what a person has written with his own blood. -Nietzsche
Sorry AO wasnt for starting MMO players....
SeanDavis,
Thanks for pointing this out.

For those who buy MxO for the sake of the license/storyline... It has much more to offer than the grind to 50.
