Tried the "Demo"

DugathDugath Member Posts: 93
And well.. it was not that bad. The graphics where to me far and above those of certin MMPROGS out there. I did not see many glitches .. maybe some shading issues. Clouds looked nice. They looked real good when flying though them. I was getting 30-40 FPS. It did not seem that bad as everything say the game is.. though I have heard the actual game is worse then the "demo". So I still will hold off on trying it out online. But really.. from the demo... which I admit I did not play overly long... just did some testing out for graphic and performance issues..I kinda liked it. Is the actual game so much different from this "demo"? I mean people seem to state this is the worst game ever put out..

I had fun for about 15 minutes until the thrill of flying really high, skydiving, and snowboarding wore off.  The graphics arent that horrible except for the fact that they are horribly optimized.  I got fine FPS until I got into a city or town.  Even the smallest of towns lagged horribly, and the buildings looked pretty terrible.  The graphics also lagged when I turned on the option to show grass (and whatever else was turned on with that option).  I sorta thought that turning on a little grass should not cut my FPS by 2/3.

I realize I only tried the single player part, but I can't imagine the multiplayer being any more entertaining.  The fighting was boring as hell.  Most MMO's have the push-auto-attack-go-afk-for-20-minutes syndrome, but this had it worse.  Even when I wanted to do a spell or something I would push the hotkey, wait 10 seconds for it to cast, then press the hotkey again.  Barely any movement from the character.

If DnL had been done right, it would have been an amazing game.  It was pretty thrilling to fly above the clouds and be in a huge world with a huge view distance.  Was neat to say I want to fly to that mountain way over there.  Then, like most games, it got boring because the travel times where just to much, even with the balloons.  The clouds and other weather effects where also pretty cool.  The world, at least in the sky, had a pretty "alive" feeling to it.

Its just probably my wishfull need to find a game to play that makes me think this one is okay. I got tired of CHOH/COV a long time ago (still think its a good game). Tried DAOC but the graphics look too dated for me (ya Graphics are semi-important to me.. I like to be impressed by visuals lol) Everquest line.. just does not intrest me. WOW.. played for a bit.. but too cartoony for me. I did like Horrizons and played that for a year when it came out. but from what I read no one should go near that one now. So I guess i am just reaching at straws for something to pass my time with...seems anything of intrest is comming out in 2007.

I would definately wait for a better game such as AoC,warhammer,Vanguard...whatever. I played this game and of course you're going to get decent frame rate on the demo. And the flight, spells, snowboard etc... are going to work. They are trying to draw more costomers in at a critical point. They just botched a patch which is going to eliminate much of their remaining fanbase.(200 to 400 possibly and I think I'm being generous.)

Like I said, I played this game and was horrified! It's gotten worse and not better. But tell me something...If they want to establish a new fanbase, why don't they offer a free trial like most other games??? Instead, they expect you to fork over 40$ and then if you don't like the game they try every underhanded ploy to keep your money.(Very difficult to get a refund!!!) Also, they blame the fanbase for the state of the game. Their treatment of the fanbase is awful...

But I digress...If you want to throw 40$ away and try this game you'll be on here trying to convince other poor saps not to try it! I'm assuming of course that you two have a shred of self respect and are looking for a game with substance.

Played Wow, D and L, AOC, GW, Eve, Rift and many more insignificant games.

Oh no worries, thre is no way I Was going to spend actual $$ on this game. I see way too much bad things written about it. I just thought the "demo" was actually not that bad.. seemed alot of people really trashed it as well. I thought well if the demo was not as bad as I thought it was perhaps....ect. But no.. I am going to wait.. NWN2 can hold me over untill Vangaurd comes out..and that can hold me over untill..AoC or Warhammer comes out..which ever of the 3 I like better. One thing about this Demo I have to say is.. snowboarding?? really now, that made me roll my eyes. This game could have been good..damn public ruining this game by making them release it early.. thats why its ruined..right?? ??  lol.

Curse you for being better looking than I.

Well said, Tepthtanis.  Hopefully we can save some people the money and emotional pain that is the real cost of DnL.

Well that's a relief Dugath. Obviously you are one of the intelligent folks that listen to the people that have actually played the game. I may see you on AoC, Warhammer or Vanguard. Those are the 3 games that I'm looking at as well. Take it easy!

Thanks Indira. I feel that I've done my good deed for the day.(Now I  have to go out and throw banana peals in front of a retirement home to make up for it!)

Can't believe anyone is still playing it myself. ROFL, a year ago I would post something negative about the game here and be attacked by 150 fanbois, oh how time flys.

    I miss DAoC

    Dont worry Iam still arround

The demo is worse then game ... they made huge mistake imo... free 3 months trial would be better.

What I cant understand why make free demo that is definitly worse then the game and leave live server empty.

This game would desperetly need some player base just so they could test properly new patches.

They did test the new patches, IK. That's what the suckers playing it now are for....testing. And from what I hear, the patches failed. Gee, surprise. Now, please go hide back in Farlans butt so the rest of us don't have to deal with your moronic "DnL is still worth playing, just give it time" crap. You were funny in a sad way in the beginning. now you're just sad

Hahaha! Now I remember you Zorvan/Ivvanatinkle!!!

First Mrbloodworth and now IKshadow. Are they holding a fanboi convention on here somewhere?

From what I understand IK, they did closed testing on the last patch and some of the others. Why the hell would you want to torment more people with that crap? They don't need more people, they need two brain cells to rub together.

If your fan base is so small that you can't test a patch properly, I'd say it's time to pack it in. Magic 8 ball said "Outlook not so good".

I tried the game first a the Settlers of Ganareth prerelease. At that time the game was still like an early beta version (not that I have ever been in an early beta before) . At that time the game`s performance was really bad, graphics werent`t up to date , user interface was far from good enough, so naturally I lost interest. But  though I had preordered it and already got the game at launch I have tried it out now and then, and things have been looking up (not joking) . They hav3e improved the UI so that it is a whole lot better now, I still enjoy the music in the game (they should try to sell the soundtrack on CD, if they really need money yjat much ). Has been a lot of bug fixes, the game is finally playable, its not great, but a whole lot better.

Never been interested in PvP at all, so the castle fortress thing don`t appeal to me as much as I thought it would have. What I really would have liked is something like housing, a Wizards tower. that I didn`T have to worry about being overrun by other players while I was out. I haven`t completely given up on this game. The game at launch was really bad, they did release it too early in development, well that can`t be helped now. The game HAS improved. If you already purchased it give it a serious try and stop whining.

I'm glad that you found enjoyment from this game and like whatever improvements they made. But I will never get over Farlan's mistreatment of the DnL fans. I also feel that they have ulterior motives.(My opinion and not fact!) So I respect your opinion and wish the best. Take care Jeanne!

PS. Not Jeanne Louis I hope!

The world graphics may be great (including fantastic weather effects, clouds etc.) but wasn't all that developed by people that are no longer part of the team, and haven't been for a while?

Think about it. The best part of this game is the only part of this game not developed by the game's developers.

Jeanne, you have a much higher tolerance for pain than I do.  Tepthtanis' comments about how poorly the DnL developers/publishers treat their playerbase is the main reason I have issues with DnL.  If being ignored and literally abused with so-called "patches" that fix one thing--kind of--and break serveral other things is acceptible to you, then I suppose you can have some fun with DnL.  Not my cup of tea, but more power to you, Jeanne.
