'Star Wars' creator readies 'Clone Wars'

Thu Oct 5, 9:53 PM ET

LOS ANGELES - The wars aren't over for "Star Wars" creator George Lucas. Lucas said Wednesday he's making an animated TV series of "Clone Wars" that could air next year, although he hasn't sold the show to a network yet. The series is set during the time when the Republic is fighting a civil war against separatists led by Count Dooku.

The mythic period hasn't been dealt with too much in the popular "Star Wars" movies, so "it's a fun place to go," Lucas said.

"It basically has all the main characters" such as Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, Lucas said, but the stars who played them in the movies won't voice them for the TV show.

"There's nobody famous," Lucas told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.

The show is planned as a continuation of the Emmy-winning "Clone Wars" that aired in 25 episodes on the Cartoon Network from 2003 to 2005. That series used limited animation. The new version will use 3-D computer graphics.

It's one of many projects being pursued by Lucas, including a fourth "Indiana Jones" movie.

"We're working on it. We haven't agreed on a script yet," Lucas said.

He and Spielberg have been working on a fourth Indiana Jones move for almost a decade.  I don't think it's going to become a reality before Harrison Ford dies of old age.

Star Wars is all that George really has, so he'll milk that to the hilt.  Probably one of the reasons SWG is still around.

There's supposed to be 2 shows upcoming.  This one was kind of a given after the popularity of the shorts before RotS came out.  But remember that they're also supposedly doing a live-action show set between eps. 3 and 4.  The last rumor I remember hearing is that it will be based on bounty hunters, perhaps Boba Fett specifically, but in reality there's been very little said about it.

    For reference:

Not the first question, but probably the one most anticipated by fans was about the future of Star Wars on television. "You know we're doing a pilot television series now called Clone Wars," said Lucas. "Well we're going to take that and turn it into a 3-D animated version full series." Lucas described the episodes as being 30 minutes in length.

"We're also working on a spin-off series," he added, "with some characters who have appeared before that will be a live action series. We're probably not going to start that for about a year. Like on The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, we want to write all the stories for the entire first season all at once. I'm going to get it started, and hire the show runners and all of that, then I'll probably step away."

Too bad Aaron Spelling died. I can see it now:

"On tonights episode of Alderaan 90210: Anakin is torn between Amidala and her royal clones; Mace and Yoda finally confess their true feelings for each other; Jar Jar is seduced by a young Jaba the Hutt (played by Jack Black)."

Ew, it's going to be animated?

    Bleh.

For some reason, I was thinking it was "live" action, or as close to live action as you can get with Lucas these days...
