How does the buddy pass work?

in Final Fantasy XI
does my friend need to have the game or......does he input the code and get a website to download the game for the trial or something?

    Somone needs the game. Inside the collectors edition theres a little sheet of paper with the buddy pass code & the website. You go to website, type in code, and download the game.

    No i mean i know someone needs the game...what i really meant to ask was does my friend need to have the game for the buddy pass to work, but you anwsered correctly either way, thank you Telaki :) but can he renew the account/char when he gets a real account or does he have to make a new one over again?

    I've never tested it msyelf, but all signs of logic state that the account should be carried over if you were to purchase the game.
