Need some advice

My wife and I casually play World of Warcraft, over the course of about a year and a half now I have leveled up 3 characters to 60 and she has 2. We are starting to grow tired of WoW though, and are looking for something different, well not really different but something new.

I'm looking for a game that has the ability to PvP, doesn't have to be PvP based like WoW. Also, I am looking for a game that has a lot of "end game" content, raids and what not.

A few questions I have:

1. How is the level grind in EQ2? Is it anything like the level grind in EQ1 (a month per level at 50+)?

2. How is PvP done? Is it arena based?

3. How are raids managed? I like WoW's raids, 40 man raids offer a nice balance between being large scale but not overly rediculous.

4. How bad did they screw over the necromancer class from EQ1 to EQ2? (Enjoyed being the master of plagues, poison, and death in EQ1)

Thanks in advance :)

Also, is there any website that offers an indepth guide to each proffesion? I've found several web sites that have general descriptions and spell lists for each profession, but what I'm looking for is something like the old casters realm for EQ1 that had each class's spells listed and exactly what they did, what level they were obtained and how you get them.

Also, looking for some information on the guild system and this apprentice -> master stuff.

I've been reading as much as I can on EQ2, but most of the sites i can find (Ogaming, EQIIVault, etc) are vague.

    Thanks again :)

A: Leveling is easy, if you have a group going. The 60 - 70 is hard to solo, but easy enough if u got a group. You CAN get 2 levels a day, but still its boring, and seems to much of a grind.
    2. How is PvP done? Is it arena based?
A: PVP servers are like WoW BUT there's a level cap on. The starting zones is 4 levels, and then raises to 8 levels, and finish of at 12 levels, or is it 14. And then the 2 expansions unlimited, that is ofc lame you think, but there are quite alot of instances and you can solo mobs. You will get ganked, thats a fact but still it is not that hard to get away if you really want to.
    3. How are raids managed? I like WoW's raids, 40 man raids offer a nice balance between being large scale but not overly rediculous.
A: Max is 4 groups = 24 persons. And it is much like WoW, the better gear, and the correct tacs then it is "easy"
    4. How bad did they screw over the necromancer class from EQ1 to EQ2? (Enjoyed being the master of plagues, poison, and death in EQ1)
    A: That i dont know.

    Thanks in advance :)

Its easier than EQ1, still a grind but its less of one.

On the PvE servers its a consensual duel or in the arena only, on the PvP servers its open.

    from 2 x groups to 4 x groups (max 24)

I dont think they screwed over the Necro's at all, they are one of the best soloer's in the game.

    Thanks in advance :)

Thanks, alot for all the advice guys. I really appreciate it!

However I do have a couple more questions.

I will probably be making a "tank" as my wife is partial to blowing mobs up with massive nukes (she has a 60 mage in WoW). Also my children want to play, so I will probably have one play a priest class and one play a scout class.

My children (both girls) will want to play the new race "Fae" and I'm not sure what classes they'll be better suited for but i was thinking maybe a ranger for the scout and a warden or fury for the priest.

My wife will more than likely play a wizard. And I am torn between guardian and berserker.

Are guardians much better at tanking than berserkers? I know berserkers are much better at DPS, but at lvl 70 does a guardian hands down out tank a berserker? My goal is to make sure than my wife and kids never draw aggro during a fight, is it possible to do effectively as a berserker?

I won't need so much DPS as I will have the others to DPS, just gotta make sure they don't get hit.

    Cut and dry response:

Tanks don't exactly fair well on a pvp server.  Me and my girlfriend, play a Swash and a Monk respectively and have no problem blazing thru ^^^ heroic mobs.  Go with a monk as a tankish character for a duo.

Don't subject your children to a pvp server.  It's a lot harsher than WoW and there are i'll effects for dying.  Minimal xp dept penalties, coin loss, chance of 1 treasured or lower item drop thats not equipped(Not a biggy most of the time).

In EQ2 your Kill vs. death ratio in pvp matters.  It dictates titles for the most part.  There are other things that do as well.

If you must pick a plate tank. at 70 bezerker will serve you best pvp/pve.  Paladin, being a hybrid is a decent option as well.  Guardian really doesn't have much output and not nearly the surivability of the paladin.

On the FP side of things, SK is a decent choice as well.

Necros are great pve soloers and not too shabby at pvp either.

I'd recomend Venekor as a PvP server.  Been there done nagafen.  I like the atmosphere on Ven much better.

Last thing, EQ2 PVP servers are a breath of fresh air from wow.  There are a pluthra of things to do at all times, PK, Craft, gather, XP, collections, and so on.   I do not in anyway dislike wow.  I spent my time playing it and enjoyed it.   This game just has more appeal to me.

    Have fun in the game.

Tank wise i would go with the Zerker over the Guardian, they do the job well and have the added bonus of DPS.  Plus at 50+ they really take off and are great in group encounters as they have some devasting AOE's.

Necromancers are one of EQ2’s more overpowered classes. They are basically the closest thing you will find in EQ2 to a hybrid class.  They have the choice of 3 types of full pets, a tank pet a scout pet and a mage pet.  They also have a variety of dumbfire pets, basically DoT’s that can be targeted, gain agro, killed, etc but disappear as soon as their target dies.  They are also heal their pet and can heal others in the group by transferring their own health to them then replacing that health with the lifetaps on their own attacks.  In addition to that they have some great utility with both a group feign death and a rez which allow them to get a group back on it’s feet quickly after a wipe.

Despite having all those things they are one of the top DPS classes in the game and consistently outperform pure DPS classes like Wizards Warlocks, Rangers and Assassins unless the DPS class has a ton of support.

All the 6 fighter classes can tank for a group with a healer in it.  So can a well equipped swashbuckler with the right AA choices for that matter.  Guardians are the top raid tanks, with Berserkers being the only other class to even get a shot at tanking a raid.  Berserkers are probably the best balanced tanks with good DPS, good agro tools and near the best overall defenses.

If you are looking for a tank to team with a nukeing mage (Wizard or Warlock) you may want to consider a Paladin. They have a line of spells that transfers hate from the mage to the tank.  At highest level and quality 39% of all the hate generated by one person gets transferred to the paladin, and it’s about the only way these classes can use their bigger spells without getting agro in a normal group.  The other 2 DPS mages (Necromancers, Conjurers) don’t benefit from this much because their hate is split between themselves and their pet.

Fury, Warden and or any caster type are probably natural classes for the Fae, but past the early levels equipment is much more important then race so any race is a viable option for any class.
