Alaska and Hawaii

KuzzleKuzzle Member Posts: 1,058

So... I heard there was, like, a system in place with these two states. Something about how funding for college gained in one state, could be used in the other. Though, maybe that's not quite right... Anyway, it has to do with college, and... Well, I was wondering if anyone here knew a little more about it.

All I know is that it's different for these two states than it is with the other states. I'm not sure exactly how, but... Well, I had a friend when I was little, and his dad was from Hawaii, right? Well, his older sister was talking about how there was some kind of program, and that's where I first heard about it. Since then, I've heard a little about it from my mom, and my old History teacher talked about it a little once.

Anyway, just a little curious. Thanks for the information!

It's called reciprocity, and it means that students who live in a certain state can get instate tuition costs in certain other states that agree to a reciprocity deal (for lack of a better word). I wouldn't doubt Alaska and Hawaii having such a deal, and me being from SoDak originally, I can tell you I have (had, really) a chance at reciprocity tuition in NoDak, Minn, and Hawaii.

Heh, let me tell you how I was screwed.  When I went to Purdue University, in Indiana in 1997-98, Illinois had no reciprocity deal with Indiana.  So after I dropped out of Purdue I had a $15,000 dollar loan to pay off for out-of-state costs.  A year or two later, Indiana and Illinois created a reciprocity deal.  Really felt like someone kicked me in the balls.

That sucks man, especially if you left because of financial reasons. What really pisses me off here is that Nebraska is considering reciprocity for illegal immigrants. Can you believe that? I lived less than 10 miles from Nebraska my whole life and had to earn a scholarship to get the equivalent of instate.

So... Wouldn't that make it so it would make more sense for someone to immigrate illegally, than it would for them to immigrate legally? I mean, sounds a little backwards to me.

Oh, and thanks for explaining that for me.

If this movement gets passed, then yes it would mean that I could go get citizenship elsewhere and sneak back in to get instate tuition costs (in Nebraska at least). I doubt it will happen though, it's just too stupid of an idea.

Well I dropped out because of personal reasons mainly and their impact on my grades.

On the illegal thing, I doubt it will be that big of an impact.  It just seems like a political move to me...  I mean how many illegals are educated enough to get a college education?  If they were educated enough for that, then they would probably enter the country legally because they would have the resources for education and immigration in their native country (Like student visas).  It's just some politician's move to get votes.
