UI mods and the Burning Crusade
http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=32184244&sid=1
Hi there, this notification is meant to inform you of some significant changes regarding the way we're handling UI addons. Over the last few years, we've seen a number of awesome, gameplay-enhancing UI mods along with a fair number of UI mods that run counter to our philosophies regarding what addons should and shouldn't be able to do.

Essentially, we don't want UI mods to make combat-sensitive decisions for players and as such, we've made some changes that block functionality that we feel is counter to the spirit of these philosophies. As such, AddOns and macros can't make decisions on who to target or what spells to cast.

That being said, our programmers have implemented a host of new functionality in order to allow many popular and benign UI mods to continue to function (once those mods are updated to take advantage of the new functionality), and will be providing some follow-up information on these forums as to how to take advantage of the new functionality.

Re: UI mods and the Burning Crusade
Just to clarify, AddOns and macros will still be
able to cast spells (with user interaction of course), they just won't
be able to use logic to intelligently pick spells or targets.

Full nitty gritty details available in the upcoming changes thread:

My question is does this really mean the end of decursive and
some of the awesome healer addons? Why would they do this knowing that so
many people are using these addons. The adoption of these UIs should
serve as a message to the developers that people don't like the current
Blizzard UI and if they're going to spend time on it, to improve it and
provide the functionality that people want.

Here's how it should have been worded...

Hi there, this notification is meant

handling UI addons. Over the last few years, we've accumulated so much
money that we need to come up with additional ways to spend money and
increase our deductions so our taxable earnings aren't as high. In
following this philosophy, the easiest course of action was to write
more code to break your awesome UI mods and force you back to our
crappy Blizzard UI. This will divert your attention from the lack of
awesome new content which we can later package as an expansion in two
years and sell at a hefty profit. We hope by then we'll have reverse
engineered all of the awesome UI mods and release them as our own
add-on offered at an affordable price. All hail Blizzard!

Reminds me of Diablo 2, where there were programs created that would control your character for you and do runs to get special items. You wouldn't need to do anything, just minimize diablo, do some other stuff, come back to an inventory full of goodies. No work needed, just let the comp play the game for you. I know it wasn't that extensive in WOW, but still, it gives those who use the UI an unfair advantage and in some ways plays the game for the person. Now you'll have to play the game yourself. Boo-hoo. No more cheating.

Though I disagree with why you think they're implimenting this change, the way ya put it is hilarious.

I'm too lazy to click the links and check to see if it will in fact affect decursive.  I don't think it should, as it's stated that they're changing UI mods that don't require user interaction...and decursive does.  I've not had experience with addons that cast spells or use abilities without you having to prompt them to do so, but quite honestly...if there are such things, then good ridance

I liked using decursive, and found it nice for some boss fights.

One thing that I used all the time were mods that would pick the right level of the spell for a target:
Fort Buff or Flash heal on a lower level target. Without that, I'm too lazy to look in my spell book and cast the correct level spell.

I wouldn't be suprised if they kept limiting UIs/addons, until there won't be anything left but ones that change the bars and move things in the UI around.

Mods like Decursive are definately a thing of the past after BC, however, like another player said 'don't under estimate hobbyists'. I'm sure someone will create a 'Decursive-like' mod that will have similar functionality.

I agree that decursing management can be nightmarish for healers in some instances, MC's a good expample. I'm hoping Blizzard will either give us, druid here, an option or the adjust those particular fights accordingly.

not that i care, it was nice that they fixed this, this makes botting harder and such as well, decursive was nice, but it just wont be necessary anymore in 25 man instances as highest.

let's not forget that priests are getting a "mass dispel" spell in level 60-70 that will basically remove curses to every friendly player under it.... so maybe Blizzard is wanting to give the character classes certain tools to do the same thing without using invasive 3rd party add-ons

Thanks Volkmar, I hadn't had the chance to review the new Priest talents yet. I'm hoping Druids get something applicable in the future.

Decursive is definitely useful in some circumstances, I'll miss not having it.... but it won't be the end of the game.  Same as when they took out the healing mods that would self-cancel if a players health was above a certain threshold... they were nice too...but the game went on w/o them.
