Interesting topic at the suckboards: why you bought SWG

wolfmannwolfmann Member Posts: 1,159

Did you buy SWG because it was Star Wars or because you just try every MMO?

Interesting.

I bet thats not the answers Helios and his craptastic team are looking for. 7 pages(when I write this) of people who bought it because it was Star Wars in a Star Wars world, where you could be everything and it had a gameplay no other MMO could offer.

All the oposite of what Helios and his Craptastic team are turning the game into. Looks to me, that those 7 pages (as I write this) is not the target audience.

My reply:

I had played alot of MMO and MMORPG's before SWG. But the day the first SWG webpage and forums came up, I was there. Finally, a MMORPG that not only was a world, and not just a static toybox...but also STAR WARS!.

I nearly crapped myself when the devs spoke about the customisation the game would offer, the worlds it would offer and the promise of basicly living YOUR Star Wars life, as whoever, whatever you wanted to be.

To me, it was the holy grail of MMORPG's, and I envisioned myself to be the last one to log out when they turned off the servers for the last time.

Now look where I am. A Star Wars nutcase, without a home, without a world to live out the Star Wars life that I've dreamt of since I was a mere toddler.

I bought it because it was almost exactly what I was looking for in an MMO.

I'm not here to complete my forum PVP dailies.

"It's Star Wars" seems to be the main reason most people still play the game.  I'd honestly be interested to know if there are any current players who are not Star Wars fans.  Two of my friends (real world friends) who played the game pre-CU were not Star Wars fans.  One was a hard core PvP person who had never actually watched a whole Star Wars movie and played a crafter in SWG until JTL came out and 512 MB of memory was needed to play without a slideshow in towns (by the time he upgraded his comp he had moved on to newer games and never looked back).  My other buddy bought it and played it because it was made by the people who made UO.  He left due to 'no content' (actually used to argue over that with him since UO also lacked any directed conent).

The reason I originally bought SWG was based on the game mechanics I had read about (the crafting system and skill system).  I was a UO beta tester and a Star Wars fan (The original movie is tied with the original Halloween as my favorite film) so I was interested in the game as soon as it was launched.  I had intended to wait a couple months for the major bugs to be fixed before picking it up, but I ended up ordering it from Gamestop the day it launched and either got the game the next day or the day after (June 27).

The "It's Star Wars" factor and the few in-game friends who were still playing were the only reason i kept playing until last May (when I cancelled, sub ran out in June and I hadn't really played since Febuary).

This is a good thread.  There are several good threads on there today, surprisingly enough.  There were some good ones regarding crafting, and the economy too.  Actually some intelligent responses, it must be the vet trial players adding some sense to things for a change.

I picked up the box because it was Star Wars, I bought the game because entertainer and artisan were listed amongst the profs (I didn't have to engage in combat if I didn't want to), I played the game and bought 2 more copies/accounts because it was fun..and my 1st combat toon was my 2nd account 1 month after I started playing the game.

I bought it because it was the first MMO I was able to play, and since I liked SW so much, I picked it up. Needless to say I loved it very...is it really asking too much for a rollback? It would be much better for SOE's pocketbook in the long run, as that is all theyre interested in, heh.

I remember when JTL was announced, and people were goin crazy, good times.

As you saw wold, Helios and I do not see eye to eye.

However, I called him out using the rules.. also I have posted some things there that are somewhat to the point.

I really think this team needs to go and they need to start over.   I mean based on success and delivery I think we know how this went.

Most know how we feel though.

Mostly because it was Star Wars cuase as I thought that LA would keep tight control over the game as they had with everything else in the past.  Didnt like the idea of SOE running the game at all. Didnt like what they did to other games in the past.  Sad to think looking back that SWG had everything I ever wanted in a game now it has nothing I want.

    Yup.

I had never tried an MMORPG before. I had heard bad things about the communities. I didn't really know anyone who played one other than a guy at work who did EQ, and to be honest I didn't like the sound of levelling etc.

Then I read the SWG website right after the game launched. And one thing caught my eye -- you could be an entertainer. You could actually play an online RPG, as a non-combat character, a dancer or a musician, and make a living and gain XP and dance in the cantina... and it was a fully realized part of the game, and NOT just some mini-side-game. I looked at what BEs and CHs and Rangers could do -- how you could be sort of "out there" exploring but again, not be a simple combat wombat.

I looked at all that and knew I had to try the game.

And as you say, it was all the things the current game does NOT have, that hooked me. In fact, I had NO interest in playing an iconic, carbon-copy of one of the movie characters... in playing "my version" of Luke or Han. I was interested in making up a totally original character and LIVING in the Star Wars universe. And the pre-CU game allowed that... and post-CU/post-NGE, not so much.

I more or less was following on it because Raph Koster was on the project.  I was a long time UO player.

I don't think I really took "star wars" into it.  I mean I bought UO because it said Ultima... and I was like cool I can play Ultima (think of the solo games) with other people.

Now thinking of my reaction when I logged into UO... I really can say I didn't buy SWG because I could play star wars with other people.

I also was never interested in Jedi.. never even tried to grind.. holo's etc.  I really wanted to be a bounty hunter before beta.  In the empire strikes back when all the bounty hunters were on the star destroyer and vader was talking to them... that just kinda interested me.

However, after beta I decided that I really liked being a bio engineer... /shrugs

Then again I played a tamer/bard in UO when I still played.

If they game shipped then as it is now... lol I wouldn't have spent a dime on it.  Just not even close to something I would enjoy or spend money on.  I would feel that the money I paid for auto assault was not wasted at all... if I compared it to NGE SWG.

Heck I liked Horizons better than NGE SWG... and if you played that at launch.. maybe you get that I'm really saying something with that statement.

I never played an MMO before SWG.

My boss bought the game in Nov 2003 and hassled me every day at work to get it, he knew I loved Starwars and knew I'd love it too.

I loved the immersion and the interdependency, but we both ended up leaving due to the NGE.

At work the boss will occasionally ask me, "any news on bringing back pre-cu yet?" and all I can say is "not yet"

    /sigh
