This game had BETTER be great for it since I don't see why else to play. With only PvE isnt roleplaying all that is left?
I really hope that their focus on PvE only turns out to make a great RP enviroment. I always hear the argument from so many people that RP is totally up to the player. This is such bs and is bogus. If the game design doesn't incorporate RP aspects there isn't anything a player can do except be delusional to create an RP experience.
Case in point. Play a single player game like neverwinter nights. Now play that sp and tell me if you could Truely RP in that game or if it was truthfully just a dungeon crawl.
RP is when your decisions matter, when your player evolves, when your choices and actions create a story and alter events around you.
Dungeon crawls are when you kill things, level and get loot.
Now it is true that with fellow players around I can RP my character while conversing.. but I can do that in a IRC room right now too. An mmorpg that really wants to contain an rpg element needs more than my ability to speak "in character" it needs to reflect my actions into the game world in an RP sense. So that my playing the game speaks for my character as much as my typing does.
CoH seems to have good indicators to this end like the contacts and prestige but who knows if it will be enough or not.
Well I definately plan on RPing, I think it is really the main interest I have in the game as an old comic reader..... However I prefer the darker or more indy heroes, I am not sure if I could cope with too many people in yellow spandex pretending to be wolverine...... It would kinda kill the mood..... Also I plan on having an airhead more Marvel type character for when I am not in a serious mood, called Miss Adventure, so I hope there will be people there with a sense of humour too ;-)
I plan on RPing.. I just wish it would use some form of "voice carry" so that I could talk into an empty soda can when my character puts on his helmet..
I just wish Role Playing actually had an affect on the game. In my mind, the current game mechanics do not allow for true role playing. Even with the advent of contacts and prestige, it will be very hard distinguish whether a player is role playing or just playing a lot. The game is designed to give you rewards for following the script. True role playing can only be done when you bend the script into what you think your role should be. The game mechanics can not adjust for your role. It can only punish you for not doing what its AI has determined your role to be.
True role playing happens when you have a choice. Maybe when they add Villanous play, we will start to see some true role playing happen.
I think the only time we will see something resembling "true" role playing is when we have "actors" live people- to play out the NPC roles... and they would have to be paid.. It would be a total blast.. but quite costly..
Maybe when True AI's become easy technology. I expect to be dead by then.
It's true the only form of full roleplaying is paper and pencil games, but you can still set up a personality for your character and act it out when you play them. I've played EQ for a few years and found very few people that take the time to actualy make there character even fit their chosen class. For example, I've been KSed by more than 1 Paladin and these guys are supposed to be paragons of virtue and honor. I'm just hoping that people will actualy act out the role they havechosen for their character. This is just speculation but I think it will probably help you get your character in the comic too. I think they will be quicker to take characters that show some personality than ones that are talking about what they just got at the mall, etc.
I also started my MMORPG career in EQ and got so annoyed with the lack of RP i went back to MUDing (well eventually... after being hooked for a coupla years... damned Evercrack). I do hope that the nature of the contacts means you will have some incentive to RP. I am thinking of making one character who is less of a goody, and more just seeking revenge on one particular evil faction, to see if how that would pan out with the game and if i can make contacts that fit that, although she would probably have to be willing to fight any baddies in order to find any place on a 'team'
Does anyone know if there are any good RP type guilds setting themselves up yet for CoH? I always try to make a char who can kinda solo, but I prefer to do healing and crowd control, so guilds/groups are handy
I always try to roleplay when I play any game. I did so with DAoC. I did so with AO. You cannot force people to roleplay, though from the people who post in here, it really looks like there will be a lot of roleplaying involved with CoH.
Viridia have you considered starting a RP guild? Hopefully they will list at least some of the server names, it will make it easier for those starting guilds, every one in the guild will know which one to go on.
I will definitly be RP my character. Actually I get into games rathur quickly. I will put a lot of time towards my character and friends. Mainly to those in the same guild.
Personally I try to mix my rping with whoever I happen to team with. This generally results because I never seem to play with the same people when I log on...maybe a guild would be best for me...but then if I am going to rp my character, thats not the way he's going to roll. So I tend to be more adaptive than stuck in a certain gear. I have to say though that rping is the most fun way to play a mmoRPG....lol....just thought I would point out that last bit there.
I think group membership really depends on the character. I think starting off I won't play a loner type character just so I can get a better feel for the game and see how playing off the strengths of others work. In other games I play, I normally play solo characters who mix into groups when needed. I think this time, with the style of game this is, I will be more willing to join a group right off the bat.
Actually I would prefer to do the opposite and everyone else do the opposite as well. I've found that most of the early game tips for mmorpgs have been to play by yourself for at least a few lvls so you get the hang of the game without endangering other players with sloppy play. I for one dont want to join a group or want someone joining who doesnt really know how to even control their character yet and get me killed or they die a lot and cause downtime for the team. I found this really helped in FF XI and SWG by giving me the basic idea of control first, then when I got in a group I learned from their play, but I could also understand how to do the things that I needed to do to better serve the group. Thats just my opinion...dont mean to go on a rant here...
I'm the same way Azenth. I like wait till I not only know the controls but get a feel for the class/archtype's strengths and weaknesses. I feel bad when I get another character killed because of a stupid mistake on my part.
I'll be Role Playin my character too, & yeah, I will most likely need to atleast chill on my on for the first few lvls, I dont like to get ppl killed either.
You'll put it all on the line for that one moment of glory, Prepare yourself for the fight of your life!
roleplaying will definitely be a viable option the way they are laying this game out. Even one of the devs said that in beta more people are roleplaying than in any other MMO he knows of.
With that said, I think you will really need to get in an established group that likes to roleplay because if you are grouping with random people to fight you're most likely not going to get roleplayers.
you guys are right and yes there is alot of rping guilds starting up just go to CoH homepage. I for one and going to rp my char and if no one can take a joke oh well at least i'll have fun and i love the fact that yes your char may have an influence on the game itself as in storylines thats what i play for maybe i'll be the next super hero comic hahaha. well that was my two bits
I hope there will be alot of RPing and orginal characters being made. I love MMORPG's but lack of orginality and RPing kills the experenice for me fast. So expect RPing from me for sure.

If trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down? We might, if they screamed all the time, for no good reason.
