Ryzom game for roleplayers 2 or RP vs Role Play

RattrapRattrap Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 1,599

I think we esatblished the fact Ryzom is "the" roleplay MMO.

But being persistant world - MMOs add another more serious aspect of RP - i shall call it "role play"

While RP is all in your head , role play is real (in terms of simulated world)

In RP you can play the best crafter around, but in role play you are the best crafter around.

In RP you can play hostility with another guild , but in role play you have actual confronting interests.

Only sandbox games have this type of gameplay, and it is largely a product of game economy, teritoriality, and class specialisation.

Only game that really have this is EVE. Because of its market system and ability to controll teritories.
There are actual wars in EVE, espionage, and yes even galaxy wide scams....

Ryzom is EVEs little "artistic" brother (or sister).

What do you think about ROLE play in Ryzom.

I don't quite get your distinction. Could you clarify a little more?

I believe Rattrap is talking about the difference between "pretending" and participating in a virtual world. Does this makes sense?.

In Ryzom you can be the BEST crafter - and it has very little to do with your level and more to do with your knowledge about materials and recipes. We have legendary crafters, guarding their secret recipes.

You can also be a very good scout at low levels if you learn how mobs behave, who has good eyesight who is blind, when to take advantage of a arma being attacked by a torbak.

My very shallow insight in EVE is that it is a much more competative game than Ryzom, both tradition and game mechanics has made this community very welcoming. As you obviously have played D&D; an "Evil" character would be quite a challenge to play here. That doesn't mean there's no hostility between guilds, outposts are fought over.

Yeah, EVE is Ryzom's evil twin

I mean that in game like EVE. You are not roleplaying - by actively participating in the sandbox universe you are actually playing a real role in that world.

You dont need to play baddie, bad pirate - you are actually a pirate. Or you are not roleplaying a spy , you are actually spying on another guild. You are not roleplaying a merchant , you actually own a company that sells ammunition... etc

There is almost no roleplay in eve, playing the game is allready playing a role.

    Got it?

    p.s.

I am not advertising EVE here. It is good game , but it lacks a beuty of Ryzom....it is quite cold space there

I see.  This isn't a distinction I would make in how I play.
Yes, I think you can do all this but at the meta level the game is a lot less ruthless and you might want to be a touch more forgiving and thoughtful to other players than in EvE. Consideration as well as purity of role.

There is "role play" on Ryzom like on Eve. Somes below :
    • Legendary crafters (how hell can he get those stats on this weapon !). Only players can makes good gear (even bad crafters makes better gear than NPC), so crafters on Ryzom are "role play" only.
    • Harvesting and hunting is the only way to get materials needed to get experience in craft. So Harvesters and hunters are "role play" only.
    • Famous tacticians during outposts battles.
    • Famous politics taking real decisions on how outposts will be managed among guilds alliance. (At least on Aniro)
    • Having a body guard when you harvest in dangerous area is not for roleplay needs but for "role play" needs !)
    • Legendary travel's guide whom can lead a troop of 20 low levels players in nightmare zone with no loss (or so few ;) )

Ryzom is not Eve's little artistic brother (or sister). The games have nothing to do with one another and have nothing in common other than they are both mmo's.

Saying Ryzom has any relation to Eve is like saying a shoelace has something to do with an apple.

seriously just try the game already.  I'm sure at worst you'd
loose 9 euros or something along those lines, and thats to get to the
    mainland etc.

It has no automated system at all btw.  It is a true sandbox stlye
mmorpg, Ryzom RIng 2 looks a good addition because it allows players to
be 'the Gms'.  Atm i believe the GMS and their helpers create
weekly contents and storylines... which are quite good sometimes.

I don't really get your "Be the pirate" rather than "roleplay a pirate"
point.   You mean when you start the game you get the option
to pick the "pirate" option as opposed to gaining a reputation from the
community as a pirate?  Baffled by it tbh.

    It is simple.

Let say I decide to be a pirate , or brigand would be a better term for a land. I set up my base of operations in a known route of high quality harvesters and simply rob them when they come back from harvesting. Sell my loot to a friendly shady crafter for good amounts of money or trade it for armor and weapons.

In this way I am not roleplaying a pirate(brigand) , but i am actually playing a role of brigand in a wirtual world.

    Another example

My briganding has got lot of high level harvesters pissed. They need protection. So they hire a guild to patrol and guard the area. This guild is now role playing a militia , composed of high level fighters.

    Yet another example.

Me and my brigand buddies are desperate, our only source of income is gone. We decide to hire few new people in attempt to infiltrate the militia guild and report on their movements and plans. They are now role playing spys....

    And as for trying Ryzom.

Yes i am playing the trial for some time now. Played it before on mainland too. I just cannot seem to connect with the game. I really love the graphic , love the lore. Love the friendly comunity.

But i cannot shake the feeling of something missing. Perhaps some kind of drive to play it.

    Some kind of purpose perhaps....

I think I'm starting to understand what you mean Rattrap, but keep in mind not everyone is all that much into RP tho they may try to RP. Some players can act like a brigand, others actually make their character be the brigand.

But nowhere will you find this enforced by gamemechanics on how you need to 'roleplay'. It's all down to player's interpretation as Ryzom isn't specifically designed for one particular type of roleplayer.

As for the purpose you seem to be looking for ... I'm not sure, but in any PnP games I played I was never told the purpose; my characters had their own motivations, own goals, fears, shortcommings. Just as how your PnP DM/GM/AM won't tell you how to develop your character, what it's goals are (if they do they are telling the story for you, and not by your character, which makes the point of PnP games daft), so won't Ryzom. It's up to you to take control, to make your own goals, it's your role on the living planet.

You can be a bandit but all you're really going to get out of it is the satisfaction of killing people.  You can't loot dead people and the death penalty, while inconvenient, isn't worth giving up decent Prime Roots materials for so extorting people wouldn't get you very far.  There are battles over the best digging spots on occasion and perhaps the closest thing you could do would be extortion, camping out the area and demanding a cut of the digging rights to let people in.

The militia part and mercenary stuff you can do.

As to purpose, you need to find your own.  You could join a faction or resist the factions, you could become that bandit type or you could try and keep those areas liberated.
