No you are a capsule where you can buy and then enter the ship.
you can play only in the universe... playing in the planets will be here... some day...
and you don't gain experience points... you "gain" skills, you have to get money to buy skills...
and you are complity free to do what ever you plea... mining, pvp, piracy, missions...
You decide your fate
1. You play a character inside a pod, which contains neural interfaces with your character. You never actually see your character other than your avatar. You can buy any ship in the game even the ones that aren't from your race, given that you have the right skills.
2. No. They are working where you can fly around on planets, but as it stands now you can't do anything to or on planets. You dock inside space stations.
3. The game is skill based. Skills train over real time. Right now I have Social lvl 4 training, it will be done in 7hrs. Each time you go up a level on a skill it gets longer. The time it takes to train a skill is dependant on your attributes, which you can raise with skills or implants.
Take my social skill. I have a bare minimum of Charisma and Charisma is Social's main attribute, and charisma is pretty much useless for anything besides Trade, Social, or Corp management skills.
Social lvl 1 took 1hr 15min (or so)
Social lvl 2 took 3hrs 20min (or so)
Social lvl 3 took 6hrs 45min (or so)
Social lvl 4 is taking 9hrs 59min (or so)
You may need one skill at a certain lvl to begin training another skill. The reason I am training the Social Skill is because I need Social lvl 4 to begin training the Fast Talk skill. The Fast Talk skill will allow me to get an extra 5% to my security increase everytime I kill an NPC which helps me alot because I'm a pirate and have alot of negative rep. Each lvl of Fast Talk will give me an extra 5% Increase. ALL skill have a max level of 5. So that means if I train Fast Talk to lvl 5 I will have a 25% Increase to the security status I get for killing NPCs.
EVE is a very complicated game.
If you played PreCU/NGE SWG and like PVP, then you will like EVE most likely. Unless you can't get past the fact that you will never see your character "walk" around.
A Work in Progress.

This is NOTHING like any other online game, ever!
I used to be a die hard SWG player until the "New Game Enhancements".
In EVE you are *NOT* a ship. You are a pilot who happens to, gasp, pilot ships.
You can have a plethora of ships although can only fly one at a time. There are "drones" which act like "pets" in an odd kinda way.
EXP and skills are aquired in real time. You gain experiance even when you are logged off or the server is down. You cannot play for 20 hours straigth to get more exp.
The closest thing to a "grind" this game has is the acquisistion of assets.
EVERYTHING in EVE is a consumable object.
You do *not* have a character that you can run and jump around with. The game is more advanced then that...

Guides & Trials for EvE Online:
Do what i did Tete. Read everything that you can find before you start to play. Then, play the game for the trial period. You really can't have someone describe the game to you however. It just isn't what you'll expect(for better or worse). It's nothing like WoW at all. I played WoW for well over one and half years and this game just has a totally different feel to it. I am only three or four days into the game and have a perfect grasp of the basics and skills.
One word of advice if you decide to play: do the tutorial....all of it. It will give you everything you need to know at the start.
As a fellow SWG refugee (actually I played EVE both before and After SWG so I am not sure WHAT that classifies me as LOL) Welcome!
EVE is not like any other MMORPG that you have ever played. However it does share some similarities to 'classic' SWG in that your character is the sum of the skills you choose to train him in. However you do not use "experience" to gain skills but, rather, time.
Everything in EVE is something you will buy, make or find. You can do just about anything in EVE.
You pilot ships, period. You will never get out of a 'ship' of one form or another. When you eject you are in a 'pod' which is, after all is said and done, just a baby ship that happens to be shaped like an egg It'll even go to warp ,,,, hmmmm.... warp capable flying eggs? NANU NANU!
Anyway, EVE is a lot of fun... and it's very boring at the same time. Whether it appeals to you or not is very hard to predict. Grab the trial and give it a spin.
