Hey all! I love FFXI (my favorite game), and am getting close to the support job (ok, seriously 9 more levels because I re-created my character twice ). I am a big defensive/healing person, so what would be the best combo? I contacted Square and they said they couldn't say and suggested I should contact other players, so here I am. My guess is Paladin/White Mage (normally White Mage/Paladin, but the Players' Guide doesn't suggest this), so anyone know? Thanks for the help!

you know there are alot of ways to dual class but the one key factor when doing this, you must think to yourself, how effective will you be for a group?
A paladin/white mage will only be half as effective as a normal white mage and you won't be able to tank like a true paladin/warrior. Your only viable option with that combo to be truely helpful to a group you would have to go with a 2handed sword. So you can assist the groups normal white mage and at least do some decent damage in turn, you will eventually pull some aggro. but you won't be able to take alot of damage because your evasion skill will always be low do to you taking a non-standard melee class. It just seems that it will be hard to find a party. Not to mention hard to play.
Even a white mage/ paladin, first you will have to do the option above first. because the only way to level a job is to have it as your main job. so you will have to deal with said above for awhile until you hit at least lv 30 paladn then switch back to white mage which will allow you to get up to the lv 60 cap for a maxed subjob.
The one biggest problem with a whm/pld is the fact you will end up with a bit higher CHR score than normal because paladins have fairly high charisma. Charisma being the stat that controls your Enmity ability. Enmity being your ability to Hold Aggro. The last thing you want as a whm is the have More aggro.
Now with all that said you also must understand that either way your mana pool is going to be low, and even if you are a Taru. But taru would be the only probable option for it work well at all.
My suggestion if you just HAVE to play that setup, i would first level warrior up to level 15. Then take your paladin and sub it with warrior. You can solo this way or with a white mage sub until you hit about level 16 as paladin. this way you will work your evasion skill fairly well. But when you think you can't solo anymore, just sub out with the warrior and try and be the main tank for groups until you get your Paladin to level 30. Then after that you can try to see how the whm/pld works out for you.
But if that don't seem to work well for groups, then just level blm up to level 30 with whm sub, then swap out and try to get level 70+ with whm. then work on your paladin as said.
Once you have paladin up to level 37-40 then you are good for being maxed as a subjob. then once you have your whm at max level there is no need for groups for xp, you can do as you like at that point. So whm/pld is your thing, go for it. But you will have to perfect some kind of setup that will make you very viable in a group otherwise.
But you say you want to be a defensive healer, have you tried a Red Mage? To save yourself all the hoopla of all the said above. Red Mages are great like that, they are great to solo with even up to level 30ish. You have alot of spells and skills to your disposal. Once you get the spell called Phalanx, which will make a Red mage very tankable. you could viably sub Red mage with Warrior after that and be an interesting combo. You could enfeeble, keep the mages ready to go with Refresh and be tankable as a secondary tank with phalanx. If you care to be more effective as a Red Mage though, sub black mage for elemental seal. Or if you want to heal better go with white mage as a sub for divine seal. But for you i would highly recommend this selection.
Well, I was thinking of going with Red Mage (I know their healing is better than Paladins), but my players' guide said Paladins have good defense. Man, I wish I could just know the best combo...
