Everytime I think about the SouthPark WoW episode I laugh.

It just really brightens my day to see someone finally realize what I have been trying to formulate in writing to developers, what is wrong with their game.  I never even really liked Southpark that much either, their jokes were rude and crude.

********************************************************

"Everytime we try to log onto your world, someone keeps killing us."

Cartman, "He's a complete butthole!"

***********************************************************

"Outside I am a simple geologist, but in here I am Falcore, Defender of the alliance, *GAaH*...."

"I think that guy just killed you."

"Why?!  WHY!?!!"

Why?  That is what I have asked time and time again, why?  What purpose does PvP serve?  Territorial expansion in a war?  Or just random ganking by dweebs with nothing better to do with their misearable lives.

    Have you never played WoW?

The whole episode was poking fun at how you can't PK in that game.

    QFE.

Nerf09, you must realize there are _PvE_ servers for those who want to PvE without being annoyed by members of the other Faction.

I never watch southpark but this episode was legendary (like the poop).  I liked how they showed that WoW influences everyone because it's so popular.  Also, when they said "How can you forget about the World...of warcraft was halarious.

No, I think the emphasis was on how you can succeed at MMO's if you don't have a life. image

Actually I think it was very much an episode about WoW. Given some of the unique animations and the direct naming of Blizzard and Warcraft I would bet that Blizz was involved in the episode. For legal reasons companies and products are not specifically named. Instead they rename them to something similar, like Universe of Battlecraft and Lizard Productions. Any publicity is good publicity and Blizz probably signed on for a little 'you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours.'

It was an episode about the entire MMO market, online games and the people who play them.  The ultimate pointlessness of the games, and the brainless grind.  The dweebs and fanboys.  It was not about WoW.

Is there an echo in here? image

Apart from the one line where Butters says that he is playing Hello Kitty Online Adventures, there is no reference to any other MMO. How can the episode be about the ENTIRE MMO market. I did not say that the episode did not suggest that the MMO/WoW lifestyle can be sad and pathetic. What I did say is that IMO it was also as much an advertisement for WoW as it was a South Park epidsode.

However technically speaking, it WAS about WoW. WoW was a large part of the storyline, therefore, among other things, the episode was about WoW.

you were right in your first post Ohaan. It was done with help of Blizzard, with permission at the least, on WoW. Just because WoW shares similiarities with many MMOs taht it either based itself off or are trying to copy WoW's success does not mean it was written about MMOs.

    thats rediculous.

A quote from a developer in the episode: "The game is about finishing quests" which is not the case in many MMO's.

Its not about MMO's in general. its about WoW.

I would have to agree that although the episode only shows the gamers playing WoW, and does not mention any other games, WoW definitely is used to represent the MMORPG market as a whole.  Obviously southpark isnt going to get involved in explaining each MMORPG, and going over the different levels of pointlessness of each image  Hell, they didnt even show any Horde.  Anyways, I dont think Blizzard would have liked it much if at the end of the episode the kids decided to quit playing WoW to go play EQ2, or something like that.

But still, the way they poke fun at the game industry, and how we over sensationalize the things that go on in virtual worlds, as if it actually matters that someone is killed in a video game, or if someone finds an uber sword in their favourite mmorpg...  They used WoW to represent mmorpgs as they poke fun at the genre, because WoW is the most popular mmorpg right now (especially among southpark viewers I expect).  That does not mean the jokes of the episode could not be applied to other MMORPGs, or that they only had WoW in mind while making the episode.

Anyways image  It was a pretty funny show.  Its neat seeing MMORPG stuff on mainstream television!

Yet when the kids couldn't do quests anymore, they went out and killed boars for days and days until they leveled up.  That is very un-WoWish of them.  It was probably something of an added commentary comparing WoW to other MMORPGs, at least on a small level.

When the kids were doing quests, they were their normal selves...  It wasnt until they started killing boars non-stop, over and over that they became all dewbish (they all got fat and their skin broke out).  So could that have making fun of other MMORPGs, saying that they are a boring grind while WoW is not?  Maybe.  I think its probably more likely that they just wanted to capture the MMORPG experience, and although WoW is not the kind of MMORPG where you repeatedly kill the same mob over and over, they included that anyway.  Killing mobs over and over is a big part of why MMORPGs seem lame to other gamers and the general population, so why not include it?

Either way, there is still a very general overtone about MMORPGs.  Just because they've chosen the post popular of mmorpgs, World of Warcraft, as their flagship does not mean all mmorpg fans cant rejoice, understand and enjoy the episode image

You know the best part of the Southpark WoW Episode?

People are analyzing it like it was the bible or something. Word by word.
