Ugh, PSU

Why God?

Just finished playing the demo early this morning (2AM-ish) because it was the only time the friggin server wasn't full. So I get on and it seems pretty schweet, until I realize the zoning that happens every time you go 4 steps in a productive direction (I.E. Spaceport). So, I finally get to the place to quest and, as I thought, its instanced. Not a big deal, but seeing that no one wants to party, its kind of frustrating.

After this, I decide to go to the other city. It looks pretty nice until I realize THAR BE BOUNDARIES. Not just at like cliffs and stuff, but EVERYWHERE THAT ISN'T A ROAD. There is no interaction, no jumping or swimming, no nothin besides walking through people on crowded roads.

Hopefully they add some more interaction features that weren't in the
demo, because I can stand being glued to a road. And its twice as
frustrating when they show you the pretty graphic. I wanna explore!
It's pretty much giving you a desktop background to look at while you
run into invisible walls.

I was expecting a lot more, but now I realize its just 'Anime Guild Wars to the Future'. You let me down once more Sonic Team, yet all I can do is not buy your product.

Was anyone else looking forward to this game?

it's pretty much the same pso they released onto the dreamcast oh-so-many years ago.

I tried the last phantasy star pc online beta thing... it sucked hairy balls.

If you want to play phantasy star get a genesis.

I personally thought it was horrible and put it down after an hr (360).

I'm not one to go out of my way to say something negative about the game, but just no.

No 60.00. no way,  no how.  I'd rather play FFXI and thats saying something for me.

hmm..Well I was actually considering pre-ordering...But I keep hearing a lot of mixed oppinions. hmm..

    Stay away from it.

Just look at the past for that game then sega.
People talk smack about soe... sega just gives up on shit all the time.

I can't remember the last game i played from sega that I enjoyed...

  • GameloadingGameloading Member UncommonPosts: 14,182
Well, to tell you the truth, the name "Sega" is the only real thing that bothers me with this title.

*still has PSO: Blue burst Nightmares*

Personally I just started following the game only yesterday (litterally) but from the screenshots, gameplay videos and such I saw last night I ran and placed it on Preorder (PC version).  I personally like the GW feel that it has.  Instances are fine with me.  That being said like GW it isn't so much a MMO as a CoRPG.  But having an Offline version in itself is a draw.

However I do wonder who long I will be willing to pay $10 a month to play the online version.  But if it is as fun as the videos look like I think it would be worth at least 5-6 months of paying the fee.

Also not sure how console players are going to feel playing the fee.

But I am still going to try it out at release.

This is for Neuromod more so,

I downloaded and played the 360 beta the other night, and must say Nostalgia is a potent nemesis, having played the DC version.2 all those years ago I was pleastanly surprised at how the new PSU feels exactly like it, this ofcourse can be a bad thing for many. Becuase PSU is essentially and old game in new boots.

As for your affinity with GW's Neuromod, and your time constraints, I'd say give PSU a shot, you'll enjoy it once you get to know 6-10 people and can have regular 6 man parties. It's a much more intimate affair than most realize, becuase the game never exceeds this party number you will become quite familair with each others play styles and ofc become friends.

This was alwasy the charm of Phantasy Star online, its not about the community as a whole, rather more about the guys you play with regualry. taking them dungeons with.

Give it a shot, I will be. +)

    Thanks Speedhaak.

I have found a number of the community over on the Pso-World forums to be very nice and mature.   I had some concerns about the keyboard only or controller controls but they helped me get over those concerns.

Yeah I much rather just play with a few good online friends.  In all the previous MMOs I have played I always joined very small guilds and would always part with the same very people.   So that appeals to me as you said.

I personally like the instance gameworld as I don't have to worry about kill-steals or campers.

I hope the add some type of PvP arena at some point but that is a minor issue for me.

Sounds like it is going to be a blast.  Hope to see you in game.

In the Dreamcast version there were 'games' emulating pvP scenarios, hopefully they will return. If your looking for an example. what comes to mind is a sort of "Total Recall" deathmatch type game, with contestanrts.

Anyways, about the movment issues. Oddly enough and I know your probably used to movement being a key issue in Guild Wars, PS online never required sparatic movement to avoid danger, you have to move obvioulsy but its not as vital sa in other games of this ilk, like WOW.

Once people settle down and start getting down to buisness the age old Item collection will began, one of the most enjoyable aspects of PS, getting all them items and mods. Plus your little side-kick which I am unsure if it returns in this iteration.

Anyway, heads up, good days ahead =)

I have read that your little Machinery pal will eventually evolve to the point you can take it on missions with you. That will be cool.

It is my man, brings out the Tamogatchi addict in you =)

very fun thing to do, seeing as there's no crafting in the game. It's nice to have something to do when your not questing, albiet feeding your little pet and watching him grow =)

Amen.  I would be all over this if they were like the real Phantasy Star games.  It hurt seeing what they've done to PS. image

Never played PSO but I don't see any problems with what I am seeing with PSU.  The community seems very nice for starters.

This game should NOT have a monthly fee to play online, I'm sorry but it's not a quality game.

I for one am strongly considering to cancel my pre-order for the simple fact Europe once again gets screwed. The game won't be on the shelves for another month after the US release. This should not be the case, especialy with titles that are based on online gameplay. I don't mind a few days between the releases, but an entire month for the exact same version? In this time? No way Sega. get your act together.

  • neuronomadneuronomad Member Posts: 1,276
I feel your pain, but do try to stick it out for the extra month, the game looks awesome.

I would definitely buy it if there was not monthly fee.  Seeing as how there is one, I doubt very much that I will get it, but I really would like to play.  While playing FFXI and a handful of other games, I can't justify paying 10 dollars a month when I'll only be playing once or twice a week.  I already do that with DDO, and I hate myseld for it.

WoW was 6 months behind for a European release, Europe generally falls behind the US and Japan, we've had it this way since the snes days.

If your worried about the community advancing then I can understand, because there aren't going to be any specific European servers. But we'll just have to wait and see =)

Will everyone be on the same servers, im guessing by you saying there wont be any specific euro servers that, that is what you mean. If that is the case then i will definatly stick with my pre-order, the only thing that would possibly put me off is if we where limited to only playing European servers as they usually suck and are empty.

I cant see why people complain about $10 a month, i mean thats not expensive really at all, that may sound harsh as i know some people do have it rough but really, if you cant afford $10 then you should probably not buy games at all, cancel the internet and stop wasting electricity. The way i see it paying $10 a month for a game i enjoy is alot better than paying $60 every 2 weeks to get a game for the xbox 360 that i will be bored of within 2 weeks (if that). I do think Sega would most probably be better off going with a cheaper plan because this game will no doubt be compared to Guild Wars no end.

I look forward to seeing you guys in game, maybe we should all make a party some time.

I wish I could give a reasonable opinion on the game based on my short playtime with it at DigitalLife yesterday... It just took me so long to finally get my hands on a controller that I suppose I was a little overexpectant.  I started in the middle of a game that someone else had begun and the controls did not seem to match up with any of the other PSOs I have already played.  I also could not seem to manage the simple task of bringing up any type of menu or inventory.  I suppose I just assumed it would be a working version of the game and not the halfworking demo that it was...

As long as the camera isn't locked on inverse controls as it was there, then I'm sure I'll be fine with it.  If everyone else is saying that it's just like the other PSOs then I'll just believe it and hope for the best.  That's really all that I'm looking for.

This is a deal breaker, as it was for GW...  I am a sucker for exploration...  Gotta be able to move and jump, and gotta be able to traverse a large world...

    No dice for PSU...
