PC Gaming?

I have seen a few things on TV about PC gaming heading towards exctinction.  I dont know what to think about this.  My opinion is that is is not dead.  Games like WoW and GW will keep it afloat.  But will it survive forever?  Can PC programmers continue to put out these types of games?  Or if they do, can they be duplicated on the new consoles such as the PS3 and Xbox 360.  Would appreciate some info.

    Games are made on PCs.

The only reason you see titles that are stricly XBox or strictly PS2 or w/e is becuase the companies fund the making of the game.

No PC gaming isn't going to die (sigh)

MMO's are not the main or premier genre of PC game either. Games like WoW and GW are NOT keeping PC games afloat. In fact MMO's are the redheaded stepchild of PC gaming

Hm, if your talking about the reduced amount of sales in PC Gaming, you are correct. It will not die however, it has merely changed and stores have failed to adapt to those changes.

I go into game often and they tell me how the moneys all in consoles. Which is remarkably true becuase 75% of console gamers would go to the shop over ordering on the internet, mainly becuase they are not firmiliar with the internet and/or dont want the waiting times. Whereas a PC Gamer who has intimate knowledge of the internet would buy from amazon or pay to download it on a website.

The con to so many PC Gamers having so much internet finesse, is a large majority of Gamers download their games for free. Which cuts back highstreet stores profits yet again. I can understand why some people do it, games are extremely expensive and Publishers need to bring down the price, but they refuse too.

I try to buy my games as a tribute to the developers, so they get at least a small amount of royaltys. Hopefully with the introduction of tools such as Steam games prices will reduce and people will be more willing to buy their games.

Where'd you hear that, on G4TV?

intel and AMD are both talking about making chips with 32 cores by 2010...CPU, GPU, and PPU cores side by side on the same slip of silicon!

I don't know about you but to me that sounds like it would be vastly more powerful than any dinky console...Cell or otherwise.

The consoles will give the PC gaming market fits for the next couple years but that'll be the extent of it I think.

The PC will always reign supreme! At least 'til we have ubiquitous computing...image

Direct x 10 is almost here! I think PC gaming is far from dead. Infact why isn't cyrsis being developed for X360 - because it doesn't have the performance or capability to.

+ mouse and keyboard owns all.

    It goes in a cycle.

When a new console hits the streets it is more powerfull than the majority of home PC's and sales of the console/its games etc, will be much higher than PC sales.

The Console Fanbois then start jumping up and down screaming about how the PC is dead. image

After a couple of years the console has sold pretty much as many as it is going to and it is no longer anywhere near cutting edge technology. At this point PC's will be doing better sales wise so your local shop will have more PC titles on the shelves than the year before.

Of course PC Games will stay. In the moment console are the flavour, but there are just some genre's which do not work on console very well. MMORPG's or multiplayerRTS games can be made for console, but really are from the handling point of view not made for it. On top of that, when you play console games, peeps usually use their TV device as output, meaning they can only ever do the one thing either watching tv or playing a game. Unless of course you have 2 TV devices. I personally always have the tv on while gaming, put in such a way that I can see the tv as well as my pc screens. I would hate if I ever would have to choose between the two image

Microsoft are actually putting in an effort with Vista to improve the PC Gaming scene by putting standards in place to make it easier to get into it.  Unlike consoles, all PC's differ from one to the next and games can perform differently on two different PC's.  Vista has a rating system that gives your computer a score based on the hardware you're using and future games will include a recommended score on the box so people can easily look at it and compare it to the score their computer has and know if it will work or not.

Reduced sales for PC Gaming? Yea that census was taken by a company that refused to consider online sales as a criterion. XBOX and PS2 games can only be bought on the market. For PCs, there are many avenues for purchase. I myself have within the last sizxx months, bought more than a dozen games online, downloaded the client and played my game without ever having to enter some crowded retail store to buy them.

Even Microsoft has recently acknowledged how big the PC gaming market is and if you search the net a little, you will find that the PC gaming market is actually growing very very fast.

And MMOs like one of the previous posters mentiomned, are the red headed stepchildren of PC gaming. The success or failure of MMOs, does not have such a big impact on the PC gaming scene. Unless its world of Warcraft who will be reaching the magical mark of 1 Billion dollars revenue this year end. Now tahst 1 Billion dollars just from one game. Yea Im sure PC gaming is dying.....NOT.

Apocalyptica man your profile reads 84 hours ultima online played this week, depending on where you are located in the world, I'm thinking there's been a maximum of maybe 106 hours of which you have spent 84 playing ultima online!!  Now I'm into games, but that does not sound healthy.  You should go out and get a bit of sun.

Don't take this as a criticism because it isn't.  I think that you can definetly put yourself into the hardcore gamer category.

Back on topic though,  yes new consoles when they come out, are more powerful than an uber PC, but the hardware in them does not evolve and progress, it stagnates and what you buy is it and it ain't getting any better.
The joy of the PC is that if it is not performing how you want it to, then you can pull bits out and put new better bits in and voila you have a better machine.  That's probably over simplifying it a bit, but you can get my point.  PC will take over from consoles after they have been out a while.

Don't get me wrong though consoles certainly have their place, of that I have no doubt.  But for mine the PC is king.

Well I think we can all see now that Consoles are going more towards the direction of a PC like unit. By generation 4 Consoles will be nothing more then glorified PC's meant for running movies and hardware specific games, the entire situation is pretty idiotic if you really look at it.

Companies keep segmenting the gaming market because they want to make money but they are all basically working towards the same end, to more "PC" like. It's worth a giggle IMO.
