moved on to WoW abot 2 years ago (when AI came out and ruined what was left of my fun in this game).
what killed AO, most of all, was the undisguised grindfest that just restarted itself from scratch whenever a new expansion came out, and we're talking loooong rep and leveling grindfests (i do realize they've learned a bit since i left and implemented SK missions, but since most of the community i played with moved on, there wasn't really much to go back to).

Before WoW came out, it still was state of the art -- but WoW, despite all of its flaws pushed the development foreward. The Shadowlands Expansion delivered a nice parallel world (that Blizzard seems to be about to copy in its 1st expansion pack). But the AI Expansion disappointed my whole org to point of quitting.
And if you once had the "comfort" of playing WoW some time, you feel like a complete noob when you try to return to AO, you can hardly move around like you used to...
But sometimes I wish, time had not moved on...
AO is no longer one of the big names on the block, and a lot of people go where the buzz (and their friends) go. Shadowlands was (apparently) a good move but Alien Invasion (apparently) sucked which put people off. Their next expansion - Lost Eden - has been slated for release Soon(tm) but has been delayed by some 2 years (apparently) which doesn't bode well. The graphics are dated, the gameplay is also getting on and generally the attention has moved on.
I do have to say that as a new player poking it a bit to see what it's like, I come accross far more alts of old/ardcore players than I do other new players and this can be very offputting when you are insulted for not knowing every tiny detail backwards, or else struggling in general to work out what language they're talking ("wth trad 4 131 wrangle, pst" for example). Everyone else is racing off to powerlevel and twink their equipment because they've already done the exploring and learning bit with previous characters and they're being funded by rich mains. Playing on both servers, the only difference I've found so far is that on Rimor (the second one) there tend to be fewer of the completely newer players - presumably because when they're starting up they just pick the first server on the list (Atlantean).
I don't have millions stored up, having been playing all of 2 weeks, so I find that XP/levels isn't the slow or hard part, it's the creds to buy the bits you need for your level (let alone for several levels above you). The same seems to be true of othr completely new players. I've made a friend or two in game which has made all the difference because if I'd had to figure everything out on my own, it'd have taken me longer as this isn't the sort of game I normaly play so I'm not overly familiar with the structure. I can't be the only one either. These things can perhaps be offputting to a fresh face.

It amazes me how populated this game still is, and not just by fr00bs. I can't go ANYWHERE in the game without running into people...lots of people.
Granted, the graphics and engine are getting a bit dated...thankfully it's supposed to be recieving an over-haul with the new expansion. We'll see, I guess.
Still, graphics are not everything, and the game is still hella fun. And most importantly...it has CONTENT.
BTW....there IS more to a game than simply trying to reach the level cap.
What are you talking about.
AO has more population than let say EQ2

Fully agree
Go to a relatively unknown area in the middle of nowhere...and still run into a group of people.
The drawbacks to this, of course, are obvious. Competing for spawns, and the outrageous economy are just the first to come to mind.
But I'd rather play in a populated world than wander through a game feeling like I'm the only person there.
