I personally would have to side with FPS currently....I know that this is an MMORPG site...hence the name mmorpg.com, but I must say that if the new crop of games coming out don't have anything new to offer (by new I mean new, not the same old stuff disguised as something new) then I may just have to stop playing these games completely....I am just getting tired of the lvl treadmill that 99% of mmorpg's are. I really love the sense of community that these games bring though, so I was wondering what you guys thought....I am in no way trying to say that fps games are better than mmorpg's...I am just saying that in my opinion, the current FPS games are more entertaining than the current MMORPG's that I have played...your thoughts here_________

Currently I think they hold even ground. Both genres have some highly anticipated big names being released this year which should spice things up a little. UT2k4, Doom 3 - (i think) / EQ2, WOW are just some examples... There's plenty already on the market to keep the gamer's entertained untill those releases. Some mmorpg's to date do NOT have leaving treadmills. 1 that comes to mind is Eve Online if your into a futuristic space theme... there are others but i'm writting this in my lunch break and im running out of time and can't think straight lol... Come the middle of the year, say around June-August people will have a better idea of where each genre stands popularity wise. I'll elaborate more on my thoughts later gotta run.
Peace.

I'm a big FPS fan. Probably more than a MMORPG fan for the same reason as you. Mindless hack and slash leveling treadmills, crappy mission sytems that try to imitate single player games but are far worse at doing it, and fantasy after fantasy MMORPGs have been turning me off. I gave Neocron a try because it wasn't a fantasy setting and that it was in first person, but it still had the mindless hack and slash leveling treadmills and a crappy mission system. Community is OK, but I can do that in an IRC chat room.
So, what am I doing here if I feel that way about MMORPGs? Well, in another thread someone asked what would be the perfect MMORPG and I saw someone answer "recreate UO'97-'99." I thought it was kind of funny, because UO was the first popularly accepted MMORPG. How could everything including UO itself go down hill from there? I know that not everyone feels this way because there have been many popular MMORPGs since then and some such as EQ which became even more popular. But that guy, and myself, do feel like there is a major distinction between UO at that time and everything else on the market right now. When I look back, UO still had that leveling treadmill. It was fantasy based. They had a crappy mission system that most people never used. But, it was fun. So, I'm just waiting for a MMORPG that will give me that feeling again. I also realize it's not the crappy features that are making the game not fun, but the gameplay itself.
I think both genres of game can be very entertaining but have nothing to do with one another.
One of the worst things for mmorpgs in my opinion is an influx of FPS gamers. FPS gamers rarely seem to really want to play a true mmorpg. Most of them seem to be looking for a fantasy based and community centered FPS and want nothing to do with traditional mmorpg elements like leveling or roleplaying.
There is nothing wrong with this and I think it would be great if a genre of games were created to fulfill this desire. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a lot of development in this direction and instead the hardcore FPS players usually try to push for the rpg elements to be removed or "innovated" out of mmorpgs in an attempt to get the game they are looking for. This usually just results in both the FPS and the mmorpg crowd being unhappy with the final product.
And about Eve Online. Their solution to leveling is worse than the treadmill version. You have to do mind-numbing work to get money to buy a skill upgrade, which in a way is just like the treadmill, or you get money by some other easier mean, such as someone giving you the money, which means you didn't exactly earn your skill upgrade. And once you get a skill-kit and upgrade, you have to wait forever for it to take effect, which means you don't get your instant gratification of accomplishing something. Not a good solution to me.
I don't know why people insist on doing these verses battles between generas. Personaly I think both generas have something that appeal to me and I don't see the urdge to battle them out. FPS appeal to me the most after a bad day, or after work. I use them primarly as a tool to get rid of frustration. Althought they can but good times at a lan party. MMORPGs have that whole comunity thing going for it, so when I wan't to talk to people rather than blow them up, I play mmorpgs. I'm sure I could get a lot more indepth than this, but I'm really not in the mood.

I have no problem with leveling per say...I have a problem with the way you lvl...by the way I've only heard bad stuff about planetside...but maybe i'll try it,. It seems like what I've been looking for...and mmorpgfps....xaldor
I am definitely bored with the leveling treadmill. Just got into the Ryzom beta the other day, logged in and realized the horror of running around killing the same monster over and over again. Man, I am so tired of that game concept...
How about a 1st level dungeon, with a purpose, a goal, and a reward?
I am really hoping Guild Wars is what they say it is and solves this problem.
I do not think this is an FPS vs. MMORPG thing at all. Two different game concepts completely.
Yes they are 2 different concepts. I just wanted to know what people play more, and why....Xaldor
Personally, it is a very hard decision
One reason I don't like most MMORPGs is because they are not first person.
Most reason I don't like most FPS is because they aren't MMORPG.
Personally, on a larger scale I'd say I like MMORPG better. FPS is good for a few hours and provides some adrenaline pumping moments, but MMORPGs are more immersive and IMO fun. So I'd say MMORPG
[EDIT] Like a thread I posted a week or so back, the ultimate MMORPG would be First Person, and be very similar to WW2OL except it would be based in the present instead of the past. NOW THAT would rock
