To say without LoTR there would be no D&D is an incorrect assumption since it was not the sole influence on D&D, nor was it an overwhelming influence. Greek mythology is more evident in D&D than Tolkien. BTW, dwarves, elves, halfings/hobbits, orcs, trolls, ents, and other creatures were used long before Tolkien wrote LoTR.

I am a huge LoTR fan.

Actually I'm pretty sure tolkien made up hobbits. As for ents, I dont think i've heard them ever mentioned in any mythos. Dwarves is norse, although its odd how its mythology, there are dwarves amongst us! As for greek mythology, i'm not sure, I can see things like gorgons and the sort coming from there, but overall I'd say there is more norse of anything.

As for them coming from war games, I'll have to disagree on that, I think they came from D&D board games, and P&P.

But, the mythologies may of been clearly evident in their development, but I feel that tolkiens books helped the change of mythos become mainstream.

Hey, guess what geniuses?  That would be my signature if my image hosting service didn't suck.

Most D&D stuff comes from Norse legend.  Look at the roots and accents of the names.

EDIT:  I wonder if an edit will make my new signature appear.

And I would play a D&D game with anime graphics.  It would make me feel like less of a geek.

Who got the idea to make an anime and a game based on an MMORPG, but not an actual MMORPG?

Hrm.....Well I dont see much difference, normal dudes argue about which celebrities boobs are the best....except I suppose the fact anime babes dont exist....But then again you have as much a chance as seeing a celebrity as you would seeing a anime babe. Better change the subject before this topic turns into a boobies thread.
