Death of a Battlestar

CopelandCopeland Member Posts: 1,955

As the ratings for Battlestar Gallactica plumet into the toilet how long do you think it will take Sci Fi Channel to kill the show? It's alot more expensive than SG1 to produce and pulling in fewer viewers than the 10th season of SG1. Do you think they'll kill the show before they bring the big 3 shows back together for the original sci fi friday?

BSG got a 1.4 nielsen last week (for i think what was their best show ever)
SG1 got a 1.6 nielsen the week it was cancelled. Was averaging 1.3.

I doubt we'll see a season 4 of BSG.

Last weeks episode was absolutely amazing, I loved it!

As far as the ratings, BSG is a slow starter every year, they had the same thing happen in season two, then by mid season there were back up to their peak that they had at the end of season 1. SFC knows this, they also know that BSG is in the top 5 shows every week here in Canada.

If you look at the SG1's ratings for season 1 to 5, it was much the same idea, they start off slow because people are still kind of in summer mood and once the show picks up and it's into a new story line, people start talking and fans start comming back.

Will BSG get canceled, it's so hard to tell with these networks, no one would have thought that Firefly would have been canceled, but it was. It all depends on whether they think they have something bigger and better in the wings that can take over the slot.

I think last weeks was the best episode yet. The Gallactica plumetting through the atmosphere launching fighters the hitting the FTL's was brilliant. The show started off with strong rating this season. I think it was around 2.0 or so with the premiere. Personally i don't think Dr. Who and BSG can stand the test of time. A Dr. Who, SG1, Atlantis, BSG night is what we all want and probably what the network needs to get back too.

I just can't get into Battlestar Gallactica. It seems like people are whispering all the time and the characters are always acting emo...

Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!

I would be emo too if my planet(s) got nuked and all I had to hold on to was a myth (earth) LOL

    P.S. are you deaf ?

I'm surprised it made it to a second series.

Total plotless drivel. I can't stay awake when I watch it. Eastenders is a deeper experience.

Take enough plot to fit into two sentences and gurn it out to last an hour a week. Dreadful show. The fleet animations in the cutscenes are nice.

I know and believe it or not I have seen every episode even the BBC made for tv movies from the 50's and 60's. I also have every Tom Baker episode on DVD :) I mean they wont last on Sci Fi. When you studied literature in middle school did you get to the part about context and comprehension? just curious! I love the new Dr. Who as well.

Yup, one of my favorites scenes ever from the show, right up there with when Lee blew up the asteroid base in season 1.

As far as standing the test of time, I've always thought that if BSG can make through five full seasons, it would be a success and I'm still confident that it will happen.

Sorry mate,  I failed to read that into the context. Although to be fair there was no mention of Sci-fi channel in your post.

some whos dont even need 5 seasons to become memorable for instance we all remember cartoons like Xmen, batman, Batman 66(practically a cartoon, but we all still remember them.

and to the OP people who dont rate battlestar galactica over reruns of friends, seinfield, and any of those shows can kiss my irish ass.

Hmm, I was under the impresion that BSG was SciFi's best rated show (Shows how little I care about the ratings).

I doubt it will get cancelled. SG 1 was cancelled because it had reached its end. 10th season (making it the longest running Sci Fi show ever, without counting Dr. Who) 200th episode, etc. Really, the show has seemed to run its course. The Ori aren't all that great as bad guys. Losing Jack was a big blow. I like the guys they put in (Mitchell and Vala), but it doesn't feel like the same show. I'm still hoping for a movie and another spin-off show, however. Atlantis has for a while, been my favorite of their Friday Line-up.

BSG Has a while to go, plotwise. If it gets cancelled, I guarentee it will be picked up by another station. Stargate still has that chance, but I'm not counting on it.

If they can cancel Farscape, and SG1--the two biggest cable science fiction serials to date according to Nielson--they'll cancel Battlestar, and not shed a tear to see it go.

Rumor has it that the owner of the Sci-Fi channel does not like space operas, as opposed to horror, and suspense, which are much cheaper to produce.  Kind of makes you wonder exactly why he owns the Sci-Fi channel?

I go back and forth with BSG.  One minute I think it is the most f'in brillant thing on TV and the next I am like WTF.  Some of the things they do on there shows the writers have some major nut sacks that is for sure.   My biggest gripe is usually the background music which sometimes wants to make you hang yourself.  Talk about Emo music.  Anyway I digress.   Seeing the old girl make an atmo jump almost made me wet my pants.  It is like Ron said in the Podcast, if he doesn't win an oscar for that....

Anyway I really don't see SciFi dumping the show anytime soon.  It would be like ABC dropping Lost (which is another show that has many ups and downs).   BSG gets SciFi way too much press right now for them to pull a Farscape on it.

Sci Fi is owned by NBC. They're pushing BSG on the main network with prime time commercials. Something SG1 never got. If the ratings don't pick up expect it to be cancelled before next season. The big networks don't mess around when a series is costing them millions of dollars every year to produce. If they're paying twice as much for BSG and promoting it more than SG1 and it gets the same results or worse it's dead.
