For some reason this topic just makes me think of the monkeys at SOE turning the trend chart back to the up position so they can continue to party.... As seen on TV.
I read about the profit losses yesterday, when I got home from work and watched tv I was bombarded by Sony commercials for Bravia TV's and even commercials for the Sony Centre stores in the UK.
I haven't got round to getting a HD tv yet but the sony prices seem pretty high considering they're only LCD and not plasmas.

I have a LCD HD. I actually preferred it over the plasmas when I shopped in stores. It's Hitachi though, sorry Sony. Sporting events and the Xbox 360 are quite nice with the HD setup.

LCD's, over here anyway, have always been higher than plasmas. Also, plasmas have had some negative press thrown at them for reliability and burn-in
I love my DLP projection much better than the plasma I have at work.

I have been told Plasmas really shine from a far distance, but the fact that every TV room I ever been in has the seating area close to the TV, well...

I can't find a better link atm but it was in the news today.
A fijitsu employee in Japan went to a users house to pick up a laptop with one of the batteries to be recalled. While the employee is there the battery catches fire and burns the computer user.
Now you know this has happened a few times.. obviously in todays world there are going to be lawsuits.
Even if an insurance coverage pays any judgement.. they are still going to suffer higher operating costs (higher rates for insurance etc).
I wouldn't even notice really if I hadn't played SWG... and I think the only reason I still notice sony is how their employees treat former customers like crap.. There have just been things posted that never should have been.
As a customer/former poster I may lose my head and say stupid things. As the representitive of a company I can't do that.
Since I have the view point of SWG and I see how things are allowed to be done. I just figure it makes perfect sense that the company is losing money all around. They have no customer relations at all.. well other than bad.
The PS3 may or may not be a big hit in the console world. I really have no clue about that. However, the financial issues are far from over even if it is (in my opinion). As all of this is ongoing and probably will be for some time.. with lawsuits and various other issues.
The funny thing about this is Sony actually believes the PS3 will pull them out of this hole. But there are two things they obviously are overlooking.
1. They are loosing $1000 and $1100 on each PS3 that is made/sold. Depending on the version. And the unit will not start making profits for about 2-3 years. They dont have 2-3 years to play with their dicks and still be considered a company.
2. The hole they are in is deep, and big. Im talking about a hole that the experimental stage 3 Death Star cannon on the Eclipse would make. They are going to need alot more than rope and hooks to get out.

I would like some of the mind altering drugs that Sony managers/execs seem to be on.
It's the other way around, the rest of Sony has to save the PS3 if it's to ever succeed or survive.
With the rest of Sony doing piss poorly (exploding batteries, declining film and music revenue, SOE's decline, outmoded HDTV's, failed PsP, Blue-Ray's imminent demise, etc) The PS3 having the paradox of costing Sony money if it succeds is a deathblow.

Thats key there. The problem with Sony is they are trying to hard to out-do the competition. They just spend spend spend, before thinking. I mean they actually thought they could topple Nintendo with the PSP, I mean think about that real hard. Not taking lessons from the past, they just blindly throw a bunch of preety hardware into a PS2 controler, put a screen on it and call it the best. Nintendo has made competitors look like piss poor knockoffs for 20 years now with the Gameboy, Sony dosent care though, its the PSP, it looks cool.
Last few years the big buzz in the video world has been High-Definition. Nobody knows what it means, but it cost alot so it must be good. Sony took this mindset 1 step further, but starting their own little thing called Blu-Ray. Sony exec. says "ooHHooHH its Blu-ray, the laser is blue!! Blue is better than red, eventhough you cant see the laser. Our Blu-Ray disk hold more than HD-DVD's do, and our quality is WAYAYAYAYAY better than HD-DVD. It cost about ten times more but its better than HD-DVD." Soon after that, some research data is compiled which shows Blu-Ray infact, is NOT better than HD-DVD, they are basically even in every category besides storage.
Sony didnt/dosent even have enough money to produce the PS3's, they had to take out a bank loan to do make them. One more time I ask that you think about this, Sony borrowed money they cant pay back, to loose money.

What gets me with the Sony Losses is..
They explain it off well enough as to why. But then act like the PS3 is gonna sell a lot of units and make them profit.
All the while they still have multiple lawsuits from states over the rootkit. That is going to cost in legal fees and possible fines/awards.
And as to the batteries.. there is something there they haven't mentioned either.. like..
