Unfortunately you can't change your body type <fat or thin> only how tall you are. You can customize facial features like hair, eyes, color of hair, skin color, type of face, eyebrows and clothings.

  • ProfRedProfRed Member UncommonPosts: 3,495
You can change facial structure, choose from multiple voices and change each ones pitch, and there are plenty of char customizations I think.  The important thing is that they all look good, and you have enough to make your char unique.  I never played PSO, but I have played a ton of mmo's and I just don't have enough time to waste on them anymore.   I have felt that feeling of what did I spend all of that time for each time I quit so I thought i'd try this.  I have to say i'm thoroughly impressed.  I am as addicted as I ever was to a game, but I can jump in and do a mission solo or with some friends fairly quickly.  It is light enough to where you can play it casually and still advance and have a great time, or play it a ton and try to max out every class, and get every item.  I play the PC version and I can run it on fairly low end laptops and it still looks great to me.  I really like the style of it.  I was only playing Guild Wars because of my time constraints but I don't see myself logging into Guild Wars for a long time with this unless I want quick PvP.  I hope they add PvP arenas or something to this because the battle system is ridiculously fun and fast paced.  I love it. image

Yes, you can.  Use Shift + arrow keys.  You can make yourself very fat, actually.

That isn't true, you can change your body type.

Not likely (free trials) for a while anyway but if I get one I will send it your way Joshua.

Well I managed to get in again tonight for about an hour before the server went down for maintanence.  The game is a blast when you can actually get in.

My only main gripe at the moment other than the server problems (which is somewhat to be expected at launch I guess) is chatting.

First off it is done in text bubbles.   I hate that, all it does is cluter your screen.  Next it doesn't word wrap so if your word extends the length of the bubble it splits the word.  And since the chat bubbles don't appear to be that big this happens very often.

Other than that the game rocks.   I like the combat, while it is just button mashing at least it actually feels like you are doing something.  Targeting is a little hard to get used to as is switching thru the menus but once you start getting the hang of it, things are fairly simple.

I am still grinding the first two missions at C rank of course and even at my current level of 6, level 1 mobs are still giving me a fair amount of XP.  That said the level process is rather slow but at least it really doesn't feel that way because you are constantly moving.

All in All the when the servers are actually up, and working I give the game an 8.5/10  but including the server problems right now I can only give it a 7/10.

I don't like the game very much, offline or online.  Using the
keyboard is horrible, horrible, horrible.  I've sent for a gamepad
for my PC and maybe that'll make it a bit more palatable.  Several
people have actually told me that once I get the gamepad and program
the buttons to something that makes sense, the game is good.

Took awhile to get used to at first. After I got used to it i realized I sunk my whole day off into the game...13 hours straight :P. Its addicting. I love the character creation, simply awesome. The combat owns any game ive seen to date and the planets and levels are amazing. Leveling is a bit redundant, but almost lvl 20..so its worth it ^^.

Definately get a gamepad for PC version, and give it time.  Once you start buying photon arts, and get used to the controls it gets better and better.  Also alot of people solo the first C rank mission, but once you hit lvl 5+ you can get a group together and go venture off to Neudaiz if that's how it's spelled and it gets alot more challenging and interesting.
  • SigneSigne Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 2,524
Thanks, ProfRed.  I'll have my gamepad today and someone on
another site posted their config (which isn't a bad idea) and it looks
like it might be a bit more comfortable for me.  I'll give it
another go this weekend.  I have a feeling my dislike of the game
so far will end up being the fact that I was using the keyboard and
then tried it on a very old, uncomfortable PC gamepad (Gravis) and half
    the buttons didn't work.

The difference between using a keyboard only and a keyboard with a controller is night and day trust me.   I went out and bought a Xbox 360 controller for my pc but didn't open it until I had tried the keyboard out first.   With the keyboard it is doable but overly complicated.  Once you use a controller/gamepad things are totally different.   I love the fast action fell to this game.   Now that the inital server problems seem to be over the game is pretty awesome.

ProfRed, it seems you have played a majority of the same mmo's that i have played, my favorite being FFXI, but about 6 months ago i had alot going on and was pretty much done with it anyway, and finaly gave it up, so im looking for a new one now, so my question is, how does this game compare to FFXI, or maybe some of the others? i really wanna get into something new, maybe this is it, but i dont wanna go blow a bunch of money and not like it.

Well it is really hard to make comparisons to this one.  I can tell you that a huge amount of the playerbase is from FFXI.  Most of the people I party with have lvl 75 FFXI chars but i'm not sure exactly why so many are coming over.  Parts of the game compare to Guild Wars in that there are central areas where players can get together and there is no issue with being on different servers.  Then you go off on instanced missions with your friends or random people.  The reason it appeals to me so much is that it is light enough to get in and advance without putting a million hours in it or getting lost in it, but it is deep enough so that you could if you wanted.  There is no allocating 3 or 4 hours to be able to do anything like FFXI.  You can get in, go solo a mission in 30 minutes, or just do part of a mission while you have time and it would only take at most a few minutes to get from your room to the mission, or you can organize a large party and put more time and strategy into it.  The combat is amazing and takes skill.  You have to dodge attacks, learn mobs attack patterns, and if you go up into the harder areas 3 hits can kill you and there will be encounters with 6 mobs so killing them without taking many hits is really challenging and a ton of fun.  The addiction is there in collecting items, advancing down the different class paths, decorating your room, feeding your robot, collecting different arts for the different weapon types you can use, etc.  I honestly haven't had this much 'fun' paired up with the addiction of an MMO ever.  I would highly suggest it just because of how many people come from FFXI since you also played that.

Great comments ProfRed.   Yeah that is the beauty of this game, you can get right in and start playing and play for an hour or four hours but either way it is a game that you can play while still being able to maintain another life in another MMO.

In other words you can have fun with PSU and still have plenty of time to play another MMO like WoW or such.

I've tried it now with a gamepad and it's much easier... but I still
don't like it.  Not a bit.  However, on the site I mainly
    contribute to
there is a good sized group who just love it and most of them have
played PSO and FFXI.  The people who said that playing those games
sort of helped seem to be right, for the most part.  Others I've
talked to, who have had no experience with either of those games but
with tons of other MMOs, seem to not like it much.  I have to
admit, however, that the online mode has the potential to be fun, even
for me.  The Story mode, in my opinion, is just dreadful.  I
almost don't see the point of it.

  • neuronomadneuronomad Member Posts: 1,276
I am with you on the Single Player mode, I played it for a while and just decided to stick with the online version.  I know a lot of people love the story mode and it is a good intro to the game, but over all I am playing it for the online version.

The way I look at PSU is a secondary MMO for me to play when I get burnt out grinding in another game.   The game has a nice arcade feel to it and the fact that you can jump right in and play for a bit and then get right out is nice too.  That plus the fact that it is less than $10 a month, I feel it is more than worth it as a backup game.  Where GW used to be my (gee I don't feel like killing Alliance today game) now there is PSU for that.

Erm, so there is not even an option to use your mouse with this game!?

I'm not sure....., I have been playing only WoW for 2 years now.  I got GW as a "back up" but it never really grabbed me, just too much like WoW.  I am looking for something different.  I want to be able to use my mouse and play it on my 1440 x 900 widescreen, is that supported?

No, and maybe that's why I find it difficult to wrap my head
around.  I've played a lot of MMOs but not PSO or FFXI and that's
probably half my problem with enjoying this game.  I've become so
used to using the keyboard and mouse in conjunction that it seems kind
of complex and uncomfortable.  I play a lot of console games, but
    this just feels totally different.

My fingers got ruined with other sorts of games!  Oh no!  I'm broken!  :)

Sorry but there is 100% no mouse usage in game with PSU.   And 1024x768 is the maximum resolution.  No wide screen (much to my disappointment as well), but considering that technically it is a console port it is completely understandable.

PSU is meant to be a controller/gamepad game.   While you can use a keyboard with it, you will find yourself enjoying the game a lot more using a controller.

I had the same issue switching over to a gamepad with FFXI but there you had an option.  It was very awkward at first but the more you get used to it the more you will realize that it is the best option for this game.  It is really nice for me too because I play on laptops and I can set them wherever I want and relax on a couch with the gamepad.  Once you get used to it there is alot of fun to be had, and I definately prefer this over Guild Wars these days.
  • ardunmorgainardunmorgain Member Posts: 9
I finally got it running in single player last night and I only have a keyboard right now. I have no issues with playing it like this as most of the keys are right around the 10-key pad.  between the 10-key pad and wasd section of the keyboard, everything else is gravy. Of course, after everyone's reaves about the gamepad, I may need to pick one up.
  • so far im really liking it. i have not had as much chance to play only lvl 15. im a ranger and i love the straffing im mostly using guns i can move while im shooting with apart from the shotgun. the fact you can level up just about everything in this game make me happy. lvling photon arts, lvl, class lvl, partner machinery.
there are also more options for your char looks in the makeover room.
