why not get both? Guild Wars has no monthly fee and the WoW servers are down every tuesday... some days you will not want to deal with the way WoW does things. Other days you'll be more in a guild-wars mood.
secondarily, guild wars is a great little LAN party game..

unluckly most ppl think you have to marry mmo and you can't play 2 or more.. =/ And people scoff when I say GW and WoW are not really direct competitors. Many people play both. With the new PvP-only all skills unlocked editions. You can be in thick of things in like 10 minutes.
Ok, having played both games I will highlight the main differences:
WoW: You have to pay monthly
GW: You dont --
WoW: After you get to level 60, you need to spend way to much time if you want to advance your character, to get better items and remain competitive. Your performance is very much gear based.
GW: After you get to level 20, its quite easy to obtain best gear, after that its very much skill based, you get fun from trying out different skill combinations. --
WoW: Based on previous point, requires much time to progress (prepare to put in at least 3-4 times a week 5-6 hours a night). Combine this with the endless timesinks blizz put in the game to keep people online as much as possible and you have yourself a second job.
GW: Time wasting is minimal, you can travel anywhere with a click on the map, and you can pick NPCs to fill in slots in your group if you can't find other players, so that you can complete the mission. --
WoW: Based on the point above, wow is highly antisocial. Most of the times your friends will ask for help you wont go cause it takes like 30 min to travel to them and another 30 min to come back to where you where. People usually don't do this.
GW: Due to the minimal timesinks, and not much need to get the next best gear, you find that you make friends and have more fun. --
WoW: If you take time out of the endless grinding, like some holidays, not only you keep on paying, but when you come back you find your gear obsolete.
GW: You can take a break and come back, no problem. --
WoW: Has a superior variety of items. Due to endless money blizz makes from subscriptions they can add much content to the game.
GW: Less varietey than wow. Having said that, they release improvements and skill balance changes almost weekly. --
WoW: Worst customer support EVER. This includes their in-game support, the website and telephone. Totally incompetent, and this is not based only on my personal experience but on friends as well. Website mostly doesn't work. Broken links all the time, without epxlanation, for more than 1 year now. You can be on a server that suffers from lag or constant disconnects for more than 1 month and noone is doing anything about it. Add this to 1 night downtime every week, and you got the picture. It's not like they dont have money, with 7 million accounts at 8 pounds a month you can figure that they make like 56 million pounds a month... plus the new games sold. So its not a matter of money but matter of incompetence.
GW: Streamlined content, no lag, no downtime, just play. Never needed to contact support, everything is smooth. --
WoW: Incredible UI, mainly due to the smart move made by blizz to release some information and allow people to write their addons. There are tons to try, made by users and available for free, to customize the game to your liking.
GW: Although UI is extremely functional, you don't get the same customisation capabilities as in WoW. --
WoW: Very useful facility the auction house and the in-game mail system, helps you buy/sell items efficiently, much better than yelling at the trade channel.
GW: Don't know if they added it in the expansion, but last time i checked there was no auction house, but i might be wrong here. --
Probably I missed a few points, but overall you get the picture. BTW the community in both games is similar, there are some nice people, some are not.
Bottom line:
*** If money and time is not an issue for you, and you are prepared to get frustrated often, but in exchange get much variety in items, quests and user interface, go for WoW.
*** If you can settle for less variety in game content, but in exchange get a cheaper solution, hastle free, as a hobby for the little free time you have, and make friends in the process, get GW

There is no auction house in GW: Nighftfall. I doubt that there ever will be due to design issues.

lmao. Who cares about the rating?! Why do you think he's asking?? He can see the rating just like you do... LIke everybody!
Only have one thing to say guildwars might be crap graphics and you cannot jump but it isnt about the graphics or what ever you want to call it.It is about the story line take final fantasy for example!
I wonder why people point out pvp and GW so much. I guess they haven't actually played GW yet? I have yet to actually do any pvp in GW so far, though I do see options to do so if I wanted. If you absolutely don't want to pvp in GW you don't have to. Getting to lvl 20 is only the 1st step as there are tons of skills for you to unlock.
Though if you want you can Observe a live pvp match at any time in a city. Just click on the link, select a match and watch it as long as you want.
Just like on the normal WoW servers, pvp is there but isn't required to do. Not sure why so many seem to keep insisting GW is a pvp only game when it isn't.
You have just hit the nail on the head ,the only reason people play world of warcraft is because if you look at the graphics there a lot more how should i put this imaginary and a lot more friendly than say guildwars but it is the better game, its a true rpg or mmorpg as many people say because it isnt about the graphics its about the story line.
Im gona tell you now............................ GUILD WARS SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WoW is way better, better gameplay, more quests, less lag (yes, less lag), better graphex, higher lvls (thou at about 48 you hit a wall that takes forever to get over to next lvl), better cummunity, and yes, it is totaly worth paying 15 bucks a month to play, I would still pay for it if they bumbed the price up to 20 or 30 bucks a month, and I DONT WANT AN EMAIL ABOUT THIS!!!

Just because I can I'm gonna backfire upon you for saying "More levels". Any clever person who truly loves roleplaying games can say for sure that the levels doesn't make the game.
And the other ones would agree WoW and GW has about the same horrible communities.
And I would not pay 15 buck a month for a MMORPG that contains about the same content as many other FREE MMO's out there today.

Bottom line of this discussion is... Some people prefer GW, some prefer WoW... It is VERY PERSONAL!
What you need to do is to TRY THEM BOTH. It is very easy to get a free trial for both games.
Listen, I don't like GW but that doesn't make it a bad game at all... I love playing WoW but maybe you won't like it for some reasons...
Just try it and enjoy playing!

You can assume that most MMORPG.com visitors are complete idiots, its as simple as that.

FACTS: Guild Wars has better graphics than WoW. Guild Wars has better netcode than WoW. Guild Wars PvP takes skill.
For the rest, the two genres are incomparable: just read reviews around the Internet (not just here) and pick the one that appeals you the most.
And the other ones would agree WoW and GW has about the same horrible communities.
