I'm
currently faced with a problem... I know that I'm eventually going to
get bored with the MMO I am currently playing, World of Warcraft, and
once that happens I have no clue which MMO I should get next. I've been
looking around online and haven't really been able to find one that
actually captures my attention. They all seem dull or their websites
aren't giving me enough information.
So, I need some suggestions from people who actually play various MMOs!
I really
don't like super heros, anything that's shooter-based, or sci-fi. I'm
not much of a fan of overly medieval stuff either. I'm more into games
where there are some non-human race choices.
I've played these MMOs in the past...
Maplestory - Found it boring.
ROSE Online - Was an okay game until it got to be group-based. Not exactly the best community.
Ragnarok Online - Played this one for three years, was definitely one of my favorites.
Final Fantasy XI - Played it for two years, also one of my favorites. Group-based leveling got tiring after a while.
Toontown Online - Was fun for about a year, once I got far on one character I didn't really want to make another, so I quit.
World of Warcraft - Been playing it for about a year now, I think it's amazing. Absolutely love the Horde race choices.
Flyff - It's pretty good, I play it when WoW is down. I wouldn't play it over WoW, though.
Hopefully that gives you an idea of what kind of game I'm looking for...
If anybody has a suggestion for which MMO I should get next, please tell me!

We're in the same boat. I haven't found an MMO I like since I quit WoW in May, and really I played that too long (6 months or so).
It's kind of a stagnant period right now. Games that people hoped would be launched in time for the holidays have been pushed back to next year.
If you're still playing WoW and enjoying it (sounds like you are) then maybe the expansion should be your next step. By the time you play that out, there should be something else out that interests you.
You might want to look at Everquest 1 or 2
Its been said that WOW = EQ with training wheels, and much of what I know about both games lead me to believe it has at least an element of truth to it.
No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

Hello there,
I too am currently facing the same dilemma. My mmorpg background was with Everquest, and it has soured me for current mmo's that I have played. I found WoW and EQ2 far too easy compared with kunark era EQ. The immersion i felt with that game was far greater than the new ones out. There was no overhead map to show you where you are and where you are going, you learned the map, the camps, the world.
I also played SWG for a short while as well. I loved the customizeability that swg had to offer. Crazy amounts of clothes and armour and weapons to customize your avatar with, as well as the ability to go with any skills of your choosing instead of a predefined class. The Jump to Lightspeed expansion was great too.
So now what I am looking for is a new MMO. any suggestions? Any new games coming out or recently released, like under a year old? I think since old EQ days I miss the immersion that the game had to offer, to delve right in and feel like a member of the world. and not just running from one guy with an "!" over his head to the next.

Almost all Korean games look and play EXACTLY the same, that I'm blown away they actually bother making different titles. I also don't know what's up with asian games and their love for the point and click movement style, as opposed to WASD + mouselook. The latter gives you 360 degrees of freedom of view AND movement, and you move to exactly where you want to go, they way you want to get there, as opposed to clicking on a far away point and moving in a perfectly straight line. Have fun point clicking around a map filled with tough monsters. It takes about 5000 aim-point-click's to do it. Same with getting around obstacles. I don't want any crappy AI moving my character through monster infested areas, and accidentically getting me aggroed. Also, having the user click on the ground to move AND target to attack causes many mis-clicks, moving when you want to attack, and attacking when you want to move, even worse in a crowded area where there are almost no areas to click on (say, for movement). With WASD, I can wade easily through any area I want, no matter how crowded.
I guess there's also the fluidity of movement that kills me with point click. Move to clicked point. Stop. Move to clicked point. Stop. Ad Nasuem. Unless you keep clicking past the destination point while you are still moving, in order to keep moving. Bah. Imagine playing Quake like that? EQII, WoW, whatever..
I've been playing Rose Online, which I've never heard of, except for the games list on this site. It got a good rating, so...
Well, even with the overly silly cartoon and cutesy graphics, I managed to like it and stick with it a little, but I hate the Korean point click garbage, and many other parts of the game are basically unfinished or aren't polished and probably never will be (from my exp so far with Rose dev and long time players). One good example would be the Community window, where there are 3 property pages inside. Where do you think the window defaults to every time you open it? Yep, you guess it, to the "Mail" tab, which isn't even a WORKING feature. You have to then press the friends tab each time. If you enlarge the "radar" type map, the game doesn't remember your setting between launches, and the the property page choices either.
You also can't resize the map with the mouse dynamically, or other windows, as they only have one or two default sizes. Pathetic. This is basic coding, and I know, as that's what I do for a living.
You can't remap keys either. Sad.
Worse yet is their support. If you have comments, suggestions, etc, they just ignore you, but DO repond, but feed you some "company line" on your subject matter. It's unreal. They won't even admit to there being server lag and disconnect problems, and thus blame your connection to them, and have you debug that on your own (even if you already have).
One of the best user interfaces I've ever come across in a game was in Horizons. Great game with great potential, unless EI took it over and killed it. You are able to put any window anywhere you want, resize them to your hearts content, and tweak it, change it, even using graphics, colors, fonts, etc of your own. There were ever macros!!! You can make a simple macro (custom hotkey) to allow one button to target yourself, cast any heal spell you picked, or even multiple spells, then re-target the monster again and continue attacking. It was amazing.
It was also one of the only games I know that let you play as a dragon, and fly in the game. Flying was incredible, and not a skill you got right away, which made it even better.
Sadly, this game has a severely outdated graphics engine, which many users had problems running, as well as the ridiculous lag generated from only a small number of players in the same area. Many user quit over this. There were plans for an update, which were all squashed by EI. Since EI had no dev team in place and had to build one, the time it would take them to get up to speed enough to replace the graphics engine was insane, sooo..
Their management also had no plans to replace the engine as the previous owners did. I said bye bye!
