well i spent all day debating what mmorpg to start up.
first i was thinking Guild Wars, but i played at my friends and the gameplay seemed pretty boring.
Next i thought maybe i should pick back up FFXI, i love the style of the play and the partying aspect, with everyone having a role. but the population is down to 500k.
finally WoW probably what im leaning towards. 7 million people.
the only thing im really questioning is if WoW is similar to FFXI in the partying aspect. where like you find a nice spot to camp. your tank gets the hate. the mage heals and everyone else has there own jobs. I was also wondering about how items are transferred. In ffxi there was an auction house, is there something like that in WoW
What do you think i should do?
just looking for some advice.
i appreciate your time guys thanks.

WoW does have an auction house thats always loaded. Partying can be very fun, but if you cant find a priest, then a druid or paladin would work. Or...if you cant find a Warrior for tanking...then a druid or even a warlock (pet) would work.
Dont buy the game just because there is 7 million players. Download the trial first, and see if you like it. You will prolly become addicted within the first few min. of playing but dont expect that addiction to last forever after you have played for a months.
Hmm out oif curosity you seems quite bothered about population as a factor in picking a mmorpg. Now ofc i am sure you know that if a game has 7m or 500k subs it means little to the actual numbers you will be playing with.
Server capacity is the main thing and you will be playing with more people in say eve online per server then in WoW which has a low server capacity threshold.
If you found Guild Wars' gameplay boring, WOW will likely make you fall asleep more often than not. WOW is often called Everquest with training wheels, with good reason. Its easy, too easy for a lot of the gamers you find on message boards like this, and then theres the endgame...
in terms of population, the only number that really matters is how many people will YOU be dealing with on a regular basis. WOW has pretty low capacity servers, those millions of players are extremely spread out.
FFXI is pretty unique, its style of gameplay is rather rare, except of course the bit about multiple party roles, that is found everywhere.
My personal suggestion, don't. The MMORPG industry is in a bit of a slump at the moment. Play single player games for a bit, the next generation of MMORPGs will be coming out next year, and there are several promising ones, including, but not limited to, Age of Conan, Warhammer Online, and Vanguard in order of my personal interest.
If you don't want to wait:
Anarchy Online, extremely high levels of character customization and development, scifi setting, great PVE, weak on the PVP
EVE Online, probably the best space simulation game, lots of time spent traveling between systems though.
Shadowbane, open free for all PVP, gameplay focuses on conquest and guild versus guild seiges, game is slowly dying out
City of Heros/Villians, may seem corny, but the character creation system allows you to create a truly unique Super.
Silkroad Online, lots of grind, like most Asian MMOs, but includes an exceptionally good cross class skill system.
Auto Assault, crash derby style post apocolyptic game, high amount of serious game bugs
Lineage II, Everquest, and Asheron's call are up for grabs as well. I don't like high fantasy games, so never tried them myself.
Games to avoid:
Star Wars Galaxies, SOE raped this game with a rusty halberd with its combat "upgrades", the servers are almost entirely empty and the gameplay is... lacking
D&D Online, forced grouping, with extremely limited gameplay and content
Nearly everything that is both free and from an Eastern company, the majority of these aren't even worth the hard disc space.
No matter what you choose, try before you buy. Nearly every single MMORPG has a free trial of some kind. My personal suggestion, would be Anarchy Online, its an older game, but has held unchallenged the title of best Scifi MMORPG for five years now, and from experience, I can say its for good reason.
No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

Please don't start with GW or WoW. That's all I ask.
Auto Assualt is better than WoW.
GW is good, but not a true MMO.
A Work in Progress.

Wow thank you so much for all the replies.
i am concerned about the population because of time waiting for a party was kind of erking me.althoughi know it doesnt directly affect me, as a whole it would with economy and party waiting.
im going to do free trials for the next week.if i do not like any of those, november 8th the full disk set of ffxi drops. so ill probably do that since alot of my friends play that.
i think pirates of the burning sea looks pretty interesting. i want something to hold me over until a mmorpg with something unique and new surfaces.
Once again i cant stress my appreciation guys. Im truly impressed with the reply speed and the numbers of replies so quickly. Till next time guys. Later.
Taruman.

And the fact that most people can't play the game (priests don't heal, warriors don't try and get aggro.
