EVE Online: Path to Kali: Two Exclusive Screens

Today, CCP Games shares with us two brand new screenshots from their game that show off upcoming graphical changes. EVE Online won Best Graphics in our Reader's Choice Awards last year and looks to retain the title with these changes.

well it was poinltess to show these screens since Kali part 1 (what is on test servers now) doesnt integrate any graphical improvements aside from adding new ships that are not shown on the screenshots. The graphical overhaul is scheduled for Kali part 3 which is due Summer 2007.

I can see the design changes on the battleship in the right image.  They are subtle (the front "fins" are now serrated, the bridge now has visible "windows" with lights coming through, the engine exhausts are visibly different, etc.).

But if, as Urza points out, these types of changes are not due into EVE until next Summer, I too have to wonder about the release of these screenshots.  These subtle model and texturing changes are hardly enough to get excited about, even if they were being released tomorrow.  Just as special effects do not make a movie, improved graphics do not necessarily improve gameplay.  Surely there's more that "Kali" is bringing to the game?  Why not highlight those things too?

That is actually the best point about Kali, devs should talk about changes (which are plenteful) that gameplay will incur.

These models are not the new Kali models though; these are just random SCs from test server.

Oh really? I thought it was something else.

Heh well besides having the captions reversed, the screen on the right
shows (barely) the new higher detail texture on the ships. I've only
been able to see the myrmidon texture on test so far but it looks damn
sweet. Can't wait to see my old favourites redone.

Kali has new textures, new ships, rebalancing to make combat longer, new system scanning, a new seamless map (eyecandy), new regions, new CEO Tools, new mechanics (Contracts, invention), new Gang layouts (Squad, Wing & Fleet), new weapons, combat boosters, rigs, salvaging, and exploration.

Oh - and that's just Kali 1 apparently, due in a month or two depending on testing.

EVE has always been very nice eye candy.  I have some of the best screenies from when I played EVE.  The graphics have never been the problem with EVE.  Solar effects while slowly cruising past a mulit-hued gas cloud in your favourite ship.  I have long felt that EVE has had the best space graphics that I have ever seen.

tbh they dont seem to show any changes, ive been on the test server a couple times, mots of the changes on show seem related to the map and new ships. but as with all eves expanstions there will be a ton of stuff. some of it such as salvaging ship wreaks after youve blown them up looks rather funky.

might just mention these some plans on there way for a graphics over hall it would seem new skins etc you can see some of it in the most recent trailer.

these images are ancient.  The descriptions on the images are also reversed.  The close up on the ship on the right is an Amarr Coercer class destroyer, possibly an interdictor; ie, heretic.

the captioins are for the wrong damn ships

the picture on the lft, with the two large ships are the Naglfar

the other is an amarr destroyer whos name eludes me atm.

Indeed, the captions for screenshots are swapped.

First ones should be the Naglfars - Minmatar Dreadnoughts, second one is an Amarr Interdictor - Heretic (that's a tech 2 destroyer, tech 1 variant is called Coercer). I also see Angel Cartel Battleship, the Machariel, in the second screenshot (on the right, viewed from the rear) and a whole lot of Minmatar Destroyers (Thrashers) buzzing in the bottom-left side of the screen.
