How will dual-wielding work?

achesomaachesoma Member RarePosts: 1,768

Im not sure if it's covered on the official site but i couldnt find anything on this topic.  With freestyle body point attacking how will dual-wield work?  Can you only attack one point with both weapons at same time or can you attack 2 different points at the same time?  If you can attack 2 different points at same time how would you be able to control it with relative ease?  Was curioius how everyone else thought this would be handled.

I was thinking they will probably have it setup that you just choose the primary hit point with main hand then off-hand weapon random strikes another point.  From watching the E3 movies it seems like they have a lot of detailed animations for combat especially with all the extremity chopping and decapitations.

Actually...do they have dual wielding in the game?  I have to double check cuz I may be thinking of another mmo but I believe they said so far there isn't dual wielding in AoC but they were working on implementing it.  Lemme try and find the site I'm thinking of cuz I could be wrong...

    12.8 Will there be dual-wielding?<?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = O />
We are planning on including dual-wielding, yes, but we're not ready to go into details on this.

I found that under the FAQ section of the main site, so it looks like they don't even know how it'll work quite yet lol.  But it is worth noting that statement is probably about 2 months old by now...

Several of the class archetypes are built around the ability to dual weild weapons. Its fairly safe to say they will have it.

In any case, no they have not said anything that would answer your question I'm afraid Achesoma, your guess might be right on the money though.

Yeah I noticed that too.  One example the Reaver Class, which Im particularly interested in atm, is supposed to be specialized in dual-wield with their "flurry of attacks."  Im very curious to see how they pull that off.  Especially with mounted combat dual-wield could have some sweet animations.  For some reason I just picture riding by on a horse decapitating multiple people at the same timeimage

Heya, Achesoma, I found some footage that may partly answer your question, it additionally shows a very small glimpse of PvP.

The footage is a little blurry, and the dual wielding bit isnt untill the end, but in any case...

Very cool stuff Aelfinn thx.  Like you said it was kinda blurry but from what i could tell it seems like the dual wield guy is mostly hitting same areas at same time with both weapons but seems to be hitting faster than two-handed weapon guy.  So I assume that dual wield gives some kind of speed bonus to attacks.  Getting eager to try this one out.

    Speed bonus? Probably not

Single handed weaponry are likely just automatically faster than two handed, in fact there may be an accuracy/speed reduction while dual wielding.

I can't dig up a quote, I'm too lazy, but I do recall one of the devs stating that "dual-weilding" will be unique with unique animations.  Meaning they will not transfer animations from one-handed weapons of single handed class and just make put them in left and right hand, they will look and feel unique.  That beta leak footage shows that, and yes it does look two of the weapons will be hitting the same target at the same time as opposed to them hitting two different targets at the same time.  From what I have seen in that clip, animations do look unique, very unique actually, can't wait to try it.

When the dual wielding guy in tha vid swing with his weapon in the same direction, hitting the foe at the same spot, I think that it was some sort of a combo..

When fighting with two weapons the other one is often used to block enemy blows (in real combat) and attacking when you get an opportunity that way your enemy will end up being hit with your primary weapon and parried by your secondary. This propably isn't what the GMs have in mind, but I just wanted to bring out this bit of information. It would be nice to see a game where they'd implement rel fighting tactics from the experts mouth :).

I really want to see how AoC dual wielding will work and how the game will work as a whole too.

Yeah I would love to see as real looking fighting tactics as possible too.  I just think dual wielding will be somewhat difficult to implement in twitch-based melee combat.  It seems the off-hand weapon would have to be passive(parry rolls) while you chose where to strike with primary.  Of course not all secondary weapons in dual wielding were used for defense purposes throughout history.  Many people used a dagger in off-hand during rapier fights to give a nice poke to the gut with the right opportunity.  Would be cool to have different techniques available depending on what weapons are wielded but seems a little bit much to implement.

Very very hard propably, but it would please me at least that much :). I'm a collector of historical weapon replicas and I train my self basics by reading, so thats why this is so close to my heart :). Cheers everyone!

The thought of dual wielding makes me wish the pc had controllers with the motion sensitivity of the Nintendo Wii. I couldn't imagine anything better than running in to a fight and flailing your arms at your opponents trying to strike them down --- then again I am a nerd so maybe I'll just go shut up now.
