Got no life?

I played WoW for some time and to be honest i have seen some guys who got no life!

I dont want to be offensive to anyone but i think many people could need some fresh air and social activities now and then. Many younger players about 14-16 are skipping school to play WoW all the time. I know 2 people that already have. I think it is the families who need to help them get back into they`re social life and out in the nature.

plz dont kill me since i wrote this and i know i suck in english. i still think WoW is a great game and i enjoy playing it!

Cheers!image

I know how that feels.  They really need to stop obsessing over these games when they're still in school.  But, it's much easier said than done.  In the end it's still within the individuals to do what's right.  Even if the parents get involve, they would still find a way out to play those games.  I was the same way except it was console games, so all those who are out of control.  Change, or regret it in the future.

Its a question of balance like anything else. Spending all day in the gym is as bad as spending all day on the PC. Computer games are just an easy target for the masses to point at and yell "wasted time". All that show is they dont accept the fact that everyone has a different set of values about what constitutes wasted time. Dont even get me started on sports......

I have to admit I'm a little concerned. I know some kids at school are going to get sort of entranced by the game but it really isn't worth it. This is kind of why I'm hoping for more casual mmorpgs to come along. It should be more of a logon-had enough-logoff kind of experience but it isn't, people push that boundary as that is kind of what the mmorpg strives to do.

Time spent enjoying yourself over a computer isn't time wasted, but time spent on your computer bored and grinding to get more pixels is. If you have fun while playing an MMO then that to me isn't wasting your life, however long you choose to play. But if you spend all your time at the PC when at least 80% of it is spent in instances grinding and raiding trying to get items then that's a big waste of your life, and the sad thing is you wont realise it until you've quit, which is inevitable.

You could compare grinding and doing boring things on a computer to having a boring job in real-life, but it is in no way the same thing. Having a job in real-life is a requirment, and besides you should enjoy having a job anyway. But going home after school or work and then forcing yourself to sit at a computer and do more work is just a waste of life. You should enjoy your free time, don't waste it.

I have a job and a family. I play MMOs at night after my kids are settled for the night.
I get plenty of fresh air, and I don't let my son play WoW if he is home sick. It is easy enough for me to shut my router down and prevent him from getting access to the internet during the day. I think that anyone who skips school to play WoW or another game, would have skipped school back when I was a kid in the 70s. WoW is just an excuse now. I've heard the "It's just a game, go outside" arguement for years when i played MUDs.

Isent it a little simple minded to say that a person who dedicates his lifes to an mmo is a "no lifer"?`

Personaly i think ppl should do what they feel makes them happy even if as i see it ppl should be out having experienses and not dedicate them self completly on one thing. That also goes for sports, school and whatever else  ppl might "waste" there lifes on.

What MMORPG is not "dead time" anyway?

But most WoW players really play too much for their own best. It's the single most annoying thing ever. People who put WoW in front of other irl social life things are just ... low on life. And I'm not bashing down theese people, I've been there too lol. But it's wonderful to not have a mmorpg to play now. Since IMO today all MMORPGs out are either stereotypical and monotunous or just too complicated (EVE) for my personal taste.

The "no life" expression is really stupid in my opinion. I mean, what is that supposed to mean? When you say that to someone, do you think your life is better? Or that the other person is kinda dead or something? lol

I mean, WoW is a passion for alot of people. I know some of you won't understand but for the younger generation, gaming is a big part of their culture... I mean even the older ones. This really touchy because when I think about it, I'd rather see my kid play WoW than do alot of other bad things. I agree that missing school to play WoW is completely unacceptable and that should never happend...

You need to understand that chatting is a big social activities for the younger generation... MSN, Yahoo, AIM and also SMS with the mobile.

My point is: Sure be careful and try to talk to your kids if they spend 10 hours a day playing WoW but think about it. Why do they play? Probably because his friend is playing, and the friend of his friend, etc. So maybe that's what young people do these days.. They play video games! Welcome in 2006! LOL And I am not saying if it's good or bad because who am I to say something like that? Just don't miss school to play WoW if you want to have a good job and be able to big yourself a awesome computer and pay $15/month to play MMORPG! haha!

wow isnt for the casual player at all.

been playing wow since the release and since the BGs wow was busted and aiming for the powergamers. constant instance grinding every day, or honor farming every day. exploring in wow is to easy and too fast.

Look at BC, i pity those that buy it because you wont get any good content, just an grind expansion.
you get 2 races, no clases, no hero clases. 2 new professions. Blood elves get an stining island south of darnassus. draeni get the swamp or some other crappy place.

now i quit wow, im not paying for nothing.

People choose to spend their free time in different ways. The "no life" description can be used to describe anyone who is consumed by any activity. Think about how many times you may have used that same line to describe someone who is not a game player.

In my experience, I've noticed that MMOs do have a strange way of sucking some people in to the point they seemingly "live" there. Does it mean they have no life? Of course, not. They enjoy what they are doing or they wouldn't be playing. Just like someone who collects stamps or paints tries to spend a majority of their free time doing what they enjoy.

That aside, I do think there is a problem when participating in any activity negatively affects your school and/or work performance and your relationships with people that care about you. When you can't peel yourself away from your computer (or paintbrush, car, etc.)  long enough to eat a meal with your family, you start habitually skipping clases, you don't want to spend time with your friends, or participate in activities you always enjoyed in favor of gaming (or painting, blah, blah, blah), you need to take a closer look at how "whatever your activity might be" is affecting your current life and how it may impact your future.

The only reason why games are so addictive, is because, games are always constantly influencing people to play them. By introducing new stuff, new quests, new items to get, new instances, new mobs, people will continue to play and play and play, because they have this mindset that goes:

'I wanna get that new epic mount! It looks so cool! I'm gonna do anything to get it!'
'Look at that sword, WICKED! I wanna get into a good guild and raid for it!'
'Wow, that guy's character looks so professional, maybe I should play more and do the same to mine.'

Be it children or not, human beings will always WANT more. They never ever need it, games are there to put stress out and also to elevate our pleasure. Why do you want to play? It's either because your bored, you want to become famous, make some money, become the best, everything basically. It's not the point of whether people have a life or not, but whether they want to destroy their life by gaming.

Gaming can become a career, yes, no crap about it, but it depends on HOW you play. Professional gaming requires you to be of age, which means, you have to be over 16 or 18, depending on your country, to play professionally. You can be a hardcore gamer, yes, which is what you mentioned, skipping school to play, however, that is not the right attitude to take in life. Take me for example, I study in the morning and play in the afternoon and do everything else at night, I get used to it and it's not helping still, students should concentrate more on their studies until they are at a stage whereby they can forgo studying and play.

I don't know anyone that spends all day at the gym, in fact working 1-2 hours a day at the gym is much better for building yourself, if you spend all day you are basically wasting your time you won't build yourself anymore then 1-2 hours would do for you. However spending more then 2 hours on a computer is bad for your health. Computer games are a waste of time, that is what they are there for. I can always think of something better to spend my daytime on then sitting in front of a screen. I only ever play games at night and thats if I have the time. I am sure everyones opinion is different but the facts remain.

dude, you're right...I say on average people who have self-control will agree with you.  As you see most people here are crazy about WOW and they play like 24-7, you just can't convince them that gaming is bad for your health.  Some of them know but because WOW is too fun so they let WOW control them.  They won't listen because they're just too hooked from seeing other people's opinions.  That is pretty funny I'm hearing from WOW players that gaming is just as bad as exercising.  Never heard that one before.  lol

Exactly, they are classing excercise in the same vein as playing a computer game, which is rediculous. My friend is just like these guys. Hilarious in a sad way.

That completely makes sense to me.  I have heard alot of stories where kids are staying up to 3am + and it's not healthy.  But, you cant keep nagging them...  They won't listen, they have to figure it out on there own  ...when they are ready. =)

Actually I know the feeling, there are times when I am even tempted to stay on in the early hours of the morning.  Very addictive!!! =O
