Smedley about IPs

We all know the sad story of the once Glorious SWG... image

But reading mr. Smedleys blog and his own words... It seems to me that they are not having a happy marriage with LucasArts. It might be me, but this is what he wrote:

With the exception of the DC Comics game we’re working on, each of these games is an original IP. Our teams in San Diego, Austin, Seattle and Taiwan are excited about working on game worlds that we’re developing ourselves. It’s often frustrating to work with third party IP. There’s a constant battle over what the right direction is for the game, and from our own recent experience, it’s not something we enjoy. It very often puts handcuffs on what we can and can’t do and, frankly speaking, it’s a lot harder to make great games when the IP holders don’t understand the online gaming market.

The exception to this rule has been our relationship with the team at DC Comics. I have to say they are indeed a pleasure to work with.

So basicly we have the Devil complaining in a around about way about having to work with Demons..

You see, every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with their surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You spread to an area, and you multiply, and you multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet.-Mr.Smith

Smedley IS an evil sumbitch though...  He killed my PlanetSide!  And because they caused PlanetSide to fail- they make it seem like MMOFPS is a failure.  People just can't wrap their head around how a company like SOE with a gross annual income of around 100 million had to struggle to keep PlanetSide afloat; so it must be a poor game concept.  When in reality it's a game concept that if put into realization- would very quickly catch up to; and eventually dwarf- the MMORPG market.

I feel real hate for him and SOE in general.

Hope you got your things together. Hope you are quite prepared to die. Looks like we're in for nasty weather. ... There's a bad moon on the rise.

In my experience it seams that all game companies hate working with other people's IPs and would much rather make their own.  Game companies dont want to share profits and dont like not having the freedom to play with the IP.  I know that EA is moving away from using other people's IPs and is dropping many of their licenses and developing their own IPs.

As evil as smedley is, this is not a feeling specific to it image
