Im gonna give it a look.

Im playing Dark Messiah at the moment... its pretty good. More like a corridor hacknslash than open adventure like Oblivion. But the combat is brilliant.

I'm tempted to buy it as an alternative to mmorpgs but I was so disappointed with the first one I'm a little reluctant to rush out and buy the sequel.  I never did find a good server to play on in the first one where the players would actually interact with each other.  If I had it probably would have done a lot to mitigate my disappointment with the game itself.

I was always dissapointed that I missed the boat with NWN1 and it's online play, I had a few friends that said that absolutely loved it back in the hayday, I just never managed to find a good server/DM.

I'm hoping this brings some good D&D stuff to the online dept but I'll be checking it out regardless.

Not only that it is great multiplayer

But the single player campain is simply awsome (measures up to baldurs gate easily)

    My
question is can you still play the single player campaign through in
co-op mode. I had tons of fun playing through with my friends online.
Especially the expansions, though there were a few things that were
    wonky.

If you play NWN or NWN2 just for the campaign, you are playing the game wrong.

The campaign is just a jumping off point. Its supposed to showcase the WHOA i can make/create X,Y, AND Z in my game if i choose to put in the time/effort.

Thats why the toolset is included if you are so inclined. Thats how NWN stays so popular, they gave the general public the tools to create a world/plane of existence. Yes giving the general public so much power in a game is a very scary thing indeed. There are as much horrible shitty stuff created as there are good things, but everyone has to start somewhere.

    Yes

But NWN2 is much more D&D than the original NWN.
Original felt more action like , in nwn2 you are actually waiting on initiative ...

I still have to see how it works in multiplayer (not many people has the game at this point)

I'm definitely buying it, but maybe not for a few weeks because I just started playing a new player made module on the old one.
  • isurusisurus Member Posts: 396

    I picked it up yesterday.

My first impressions are that it's not as cool as the first one.  The graphics are decent but i think the "feel" and atmosphere aren't as good.  I also find it kind of funny that they used some of the exact same sounds as the old one.  The characters are ugly.  So is the interface, i liked the old one much better.

I know it's brand new and there will be tons of changes in the future but i am a little disappointed.

I play it for 15 hours yesterday.  image

It is definitely good.  Up to BG?  Haha, a bit of an optimist are you?  Maybe is a proper answer.  Will have to talk to you about that later, but since we restart everything at zero, not an ongoing story with the same toons, it will be quite hard to beat BG, there is an emotional link, a developpment, with the characters, that was just reset.  To bear BG, the game has to be able to bring tears to my eyes...I am doubtful about that, and not only once, multiples times!  Don't think Khelgar and Neeshka will, but who know?  However, the game lag, heavy focus on 3D, not bad in itself, but it may hide something else.

For example, I have troubles to find some treasure depending on the angle of the camera, this is a bad feature.  If you can't do 3D right, do it 2D.  Heroes of Might and Magic was worser on this point however, still.

A very great game.  Up to BG?  I doubt it, but still way too early to tell at any rate.  image  But the bar is quite high, it first have to beat Torment, then ID, then we will talk about beating the champion.  For now, Torment is still ahead.  1 title at the time.

I am having a blast!  image

The game is problematic at best.  The camera control has to be one of the worst in years ... probably since ... hmmm, NWN?  I mean I would not expect that in a 2006 release, it feels extremely clunky to control and move around and do much of anything, the game does not have a polished, smooth feel to it at all, and despite the fact that it requires mongo system specs, it really doesn't deliver great graphics (Oblivion's were better ... heck Guild Wars has better graphics and controls).  The combination  of so-so graphics and high system specs smells of a poorly written code and inappropriate engine.  The official forums are dripping with criticism of the core game mechanics of the game at this point.  I think that Obsidian forgot that the gaming world (and its expectations) have changed a great deal since NWN, and you can't just dish out a mildly souped up NWN four years later and have people be very happy with it in light of everything else that is available on the market now.

My impression with this is that it will be a hit with the diehard NWN fanbois and the substantial modder community that grew up around NWN, but for the broader market this game just isn't impressive enough.

I picked up a copy from EBgames last night and played for a couple hours. I like the vast improvements they added to the original NWN. I especially liked the new races (planetouched) and subraces (duergar, dark elves, etc.) and the new prestige classes. The new core class Warlock is awesome too. One thing that irked me is the very weird camera movements which is slow and sloppy. I just don't like it no matter which mode I switch to, and I just wish they would retain the camera style of NWN1. There are for a lot of bugs for this game and there's already a huge patch that came out that upgrades the game to version 1.01. Some of the rather nasty bugs is causing the cinematic narative movies to not play. Some are causing quest npcs not to trigger proper, etc. I would like to give this game an 8.5 until they fixed the rather annoying bugs and improve the camera movements.

A good game Alot of pvp servers.

  • RattrapRattrap Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 1,599

Yes , the game has much more issues than - it was expected.

To much maybe to be true succesor to NWN. And if it is so , than unfortunately we are seeing the end to an era.
First the horrendous DDO and now the last bastion of roleplaying and D&D on computers , maybe failing doe to poor coding and bugs....

Community will support it as much as it is just possible. But if obsidian doesnot react fast, the game will lose its fan base quickly.

That said. I think singleplayer (and it is clear they concentrated on that) is excelent. At least it is keeping me locked to the computer for hours. And i see huge potential for single player mods.

Unfortunately i think multiplayer will be questionable experience with this state of clunky engine....

I will tell you just one thing

If World of warcraft turns out to be only playable multiplayer rpg. I will throw my pc into a fiery pit and dedicate myself to playing saxophone

Hi, just just a few questions, how does multiplayer work. Can you bring your toon from the single player into different servers or do you havto create a new character for that? And if you could bring your original character from one srever to another how do they deal with loot that you pick up on modded servers? And last are your characters saved on some kinda server or local... if local do they have any way of stopping people from cheating?

Thank you in advance if anyone has the answers to my questions, the answers will ffect whether or not I buy this game.

It works exactly the same as in NWN1. Private runned adventures , Dungeon Master runned adventures, coop play, arenas...etc. And lastly Persistant Worlds the nwn version of MMORPG
Can you bring your toon from the single player into different servers or do you havto create a new character for that?
Both is possible. Depends on set of rules enforced by the server.
And if you could bring your original character from one srever to another how do they deal with loot that you pick up on modded servers?
Again depends of what server/mod sets as a rule. It could be that your character is imported as it is. Or withouth equipment. Or he might be stripped of to powerful equipment...or even set to certain level.
And last are your characters saved on some kinda server or local... if local do they have any way of stopping people from cheating? You can always save your character local. But servers save copies of your character independantly - so as you already read - there is a solid way to enforce legit characters
If so is wanted. Persistant worlds always force you to play YOUR character stored on their server. But if i for example run adventure for my buddies , i let them bring their characters - because i know they wont cheat.
Thank you in advance if anyone has the answers to my questions, the answers will ffect whether or not I buy this game.

I got my collectors box today and WOW the game is demanding on the hardware. I'll have top turn everything down to lowest settings...

Didn't check how you get to multiplayer online, but if it works like NWN1 then it's a tab that let you choose from a myriad of servers. The servers could be anything from a private adventure to a mini MMO with database support. Different servers handle characters differently, some let you use a character you used in other adventures while others (most of them) makes you create a new one so you wont bring in an invincible toon.

(but it is the worst timing, Ryzom has a great week long event - so I logged into that instead)

I picked up NWN2 this week and it is the most crushingy disappointing game release for me in recent history.  The graphics demands far too much hardware to produce very mediocre graphics.  The interface is slow and clunky, character animation is jerky and robotic, and the entire game shows serious signs of being pushed out the door before it was finished.
