The game is a blast, sure the echonemy on the high end of the game can be a bit expensive if you want the best stuff. But it is still manageable and a blast to play.  People have been very friendly since I came back, give it a shot, I dont think you will be disapointed.

Ive been playing the game for 3 years, and have multiple 75 Jobs. I say that just to let you know that I have a lot of experiance with FFXI.

There is only one real factor in determining wether you will like FFXI, and that is how much time you have to play, and how much of a challenge you like. If you are a hardcore gamer, or tend to have a natural talent for MMO type games and learn fast, you will probably really love FFXI.

The economy of FFXI is not bad. In the 3 years I have played, there has been 1 really bad time where the economy got so whacked that it could have killed the game for people, and that was Christmas time of last year. Item's shot up in price in some cases many Hundred Percent. 5 million gil items shot up to 20 million gil.

The econmy has Stabalized since then, and has actually taken a huge Nose Dive.  Those same items that were skyrocketed to 20 million from 5 million are now only 2 million. The entire economy has slowly fallen into a recession (sp?).

If you want to be the pimp with all the High Quality versions of armor and weapons, yes, You will need a lot of money, but that just factors into the level of accomplishment you will feel. You will work a lot to have the best in this game, but when you get the best, there is a lot of pride that can be carried in the accomplishment of it. In otherwords, yes, it is a game where you will work for your junk, but the pay offs are also very big.

The economy would be the least of my worries to be honest in FFXI. By the time you reach a high level to sink some serious gil into some ofthe best gear, you should have plenty of ways to make money

The biggest thing Id worry with, is do you enjoy Teamwork and teamplay a lot, and do you have enough time to really put into FFXI. It is a game where you really need a good 3 hours in one sitting at any given time, to really get anything substantial done. You cant just log in, and start exping within 5 minutes, and you most parties will frown upon you exping for 45 minutes then leaving. Leveling in FFXI is kind of epic. You form your party in town, work out what your skillchains will be, and decide on a location to go set up camp. Sometimes the location you camp varies on how you built the party, and which job's you have. Then, you will all travel out to the camp on Chocobo's until you reach a good camp with your desired mob's. Then you will begin pulling and exping. This process can sometimes take a solid hour in itself, and that is if you get a party invite really fast. If everyone joins the party and is already read to go (Purchased food, Ammunition, geared up and ready) you could be exping a lot faster but thats almost never the case. Once you finally get to camp and start exping, you will be at that camp usually for several hours. If the party is good, and you have good members, ive seen some parties last for upwards of 10 hours straight (this is very rare though). Most parties will exp for 2 or 3 hours before breaking up and returning to town.

The point I want to make clear is that FFXI is a game that seems to have built around a real world time frame. Everything in the game feels like it would as if you were actually doing it in real life. Traveling from one city to the next via Airship's means you actually stand and wait on the ariship to arrive in port, sometimes 10 minutes before the airship arrives if you just missed it's departure. Ferries that take you to Islands like Kazhaam and the Aht Urgan empire take time to arrive in port, then take 15 minutes to reach their location. This is because everything in FFXI Is actually traveling and moving in real time. Airship's actually fly across the sky, and ferries actually travel the water's they are supposed to travel. You can actually see the airships fly overhead in real time if you are in their flight path. The downside to this is of course time. People may complain that getting around is more tedius in FFXI than in other games where you can pull up a map, double click on a location and warp straight there from anywhere in the world. You cant travel like that in FFXI, everything is very "real world" designed, like a real online world.

One huge plus that FFXI has over most other MMO's as well, is the Job system. You can level any Profession with your single character. You can level Black mage this week, then level Ninja next week if you just get bored of black mage. There is no need to start all over with a new character. You probably know all of these things, but I wanted to point that out.

If you or anyone else would be interested in more information on FFXI, Id be glad to talk with you and explain anything I can. Send me a PM over the boards here. I can answer almost any question you have about FFXI.

krazymagic pretty much explained everything. A few little tid bits to add, FFXI has its own Year, Days, Weeks, & Moon phases, While to my knowledge the Year does nothing the days (Firesday, Earthsday, Watersday, Windsday(Lol Wensday), Iceday, Lightningday, Lightsday, & Darksday) each have their own elemental that incrase the damage of elemental spells, or elemental resistance. 1 Game day is 1 Real-Life Hour.

The economies are dropping, but FFXI isn't in a recession. The word you're looking for is deflation. SE keeps banning a few thousand RMT accounts every couple months so the economy is dropping back down to where it was before RMT inflated it.

What happend last year was becasue RMT had billions of gil laying dormant on their mules out of the economy, When they dropped their prices down from $15.00/per Million to $3.00/per Million gil. Everyone jumped on it causing a tsunami in the economy. Prices went up because people were overbidding, then the crafters started placing their items up higher because they seen people were paying more and it just made a huge chain reaction.

Anyway, that was an example of Rapid Inflation. Inflation & Delfation are normal parts of the economy, howerver Rapid Inflation or Rapid Deflation can destory small economies like in FFXI.
