Is eve that great, or is just that unique?

GunnyFisherGunnyFisher Member Posts: 65
I know a lot of SWG refugees, and a lot of Earth and beyond ex players play Eve. What I hear a lot of Eve isn't that great of a game, but it will do, or esp in the swg guys, the game sucks, but CCP makes up for it.

So I put a question before you, do you play eve because it is a great game? or because it is the only sci-fi sandbox out there worth mentioning?

It's a great game. I like thinking about what I'm doing, rather than mindlessly going about doing it.

Even if I'm ratting in low sec, I have to be constantly vigiliant of the local to see if anyone pops in that's going to kill me. If someone does pop in, if I don't have them on my buddy list (I have most friendlys on my buddy list and it gives me a big green dot next to their name if I see them in local) I have to examine them and see what they are flying. If they aren't friendly and are flying a warship (or any ship for that matter) I have to report back to my corp and tell them what I see for a fleet to come in and take him out to keep out ratting system safe from anti-pirates and pirates alike. (we are pirates ourselves, but pirates kill anyone)

Even ship fittings. When I want to try a new design, I usually spend several hours thinking about what needs to go on the ship and what I need to do to get said equipment/ship.

I like to think when I'm playing a game, that's why I like EVE. PVP is the basis of the game and that's what makes all the thinking happen.

Well, I actually like the game but then again, I do have similiar requirement for what I want in a game. So things that alot of the SWG and EnB guys miss (mainly the avatar interaction), I don't really see a point with. EVE has some problems in my eye but most of them things that i can live with.

That and the fact that I always thought of myself as a capital ship commander more than a fighter pilot helped alot toimage

Let me answer your question this way:
EVE is a good game but....

If SWG:NGE had never happened I wouldn't currently be playing EVE.  I would be playing the game I liked better before it was changed.

There are several factors that are responsible for the success of EVE

    1.) The death of EnB
2.) The near death of SWG
3.) CCP (the way they interact with the community)
    4.) It's one server sturcture
    and
5.) It's the only real space MMOG on market currently
(among those with more than just a few thousand subscribers)

The last point is a very critical one, and it remains to be seen
how EVE will fare against games in development like Star Trek.

But all in all I think that EVE is a very good game, actually for me the
only MMO worth paying for atm.

If you got the balls to make things happen then EvE is a  great game.

    1. I love spacey type games ever since i watched star wars as a kid.

    2. There is a lack of a level grind in eve.

    3. I love the sandbox concept.

SWG was always a crappy game, its just the hallmark of SoE that they managed to take a pile of crap and make it so much worse that the original pile of crap looks appealing.

EVE, on the other hand, was a pile of crap from release until the end of '03, only its developers managed to actually improve on it.

I have never been really attracted to sci-fi themes very muchl. I don't watch Star Trek. I played trials of SWG (original version), Planetside, WoW, RF online, and countless others. None of those ever appealed to me after a week of playing, and mainly because of the grind factor. It just isn't that fun to kill things 24/7 to gain levels to get good ASAP. That being said I have never been attracted much to the typical MMORPG style of gameplay.

Despite this, I have played EVE online for over a year, and its for multiple reasons. The free-form style of gameplay, the in-depth player to player interaction, and the complexity all did it for me. The skill training system means that you have to advance at a set pace, although it may suck to have to wait a long time fly things or use things, but I am glad that it is like that. I don't have to do tons of work to get better at the game, and I gain "real" skill along the way, learning how to use everything effectively. I can do what I want, and this game isn't focused on PVE, as I enjoy PVP more. If there were to be another game that could fullfill the satisfaction of blowing someone else up whenever you want to, I would probably look into it. I am not forced to kill computers all day that lack real knowledge or strategy or tactics, which are probably the most entertaining parts of PVP.

The things I love about EVE-Online is among this.

    - One server...

    - Great playerdriven market.

    - Great industrial side (wich will become better).

    - Death penalty... (I think that adds the thrill to a fight, and it makes the industrial side great because people need items :-))

    - Great community.

That is the things I love about EVE-Online, ofcourse if I did PvP alot more then I could say but with death penalty I also include the pvp ... the way that you don't really have anyplace safe in eve makes it a thrill.

If any other MMORPG did implement these things... it would be great, I hate how WoW does not give you a death penalty, sure it sucks loosing your epic things but I think it would be so much more fun to play if you could loose something.

Actually Pre-CU SWG was much more fun than EVE is even today.  How do I know?  I beta tested EVE all the way to release and Beta tested SWG all the way to release.

At release neither game was worth buying.  About 1 year later SWG was awesome... once JTL came out it was really fun.  Sure it had bugs and balance issues but I found it a ton more fun than EVE.

Then CU hit... things changed.... game wasn't quite as good.  At this point I considered EVE and SWG about equal....

    Then NGE hit....
Lets just say that SWG, since NGE hit... it one of the worst games on the net.
EVE is still one of the best.

I liked SWG better than I liked EVE (Pre-CU)
Post CU I liked them about the same.
Post NGE EVE went to #1 and SWG went somewhere around number 10 bajillion.  DAOC would be the MMO I currently consider 2nd best on the market... followed closely by ryzom.

Bash on SWG all you want... it was a very unique and fun game before LEC and SOE came up with CU... and then NGE.

As has been said by others above, one of the things I like about EVE is that it rewards *player* skill, and I don't just mean in PvP (which I don't indulge in if I can help it). The game is huge, and hugely complex, possibly too much for many of the people trying it out - the thing I hear most frequently on the newbie help channel is "What do I do now?"

EVE doesn't take you by the hand and move you from zone 1-5 to zone 6-10, 11-20 and so on. It has a robust, dynamic, and player-controlled economy wtih more depth (at least to me) than SWGs ever had. It allows, and even demands, ethical choices - you can screw people over big time in EVE and though it's not something I would ever do, the mere possibility that you can is as thrilling to me as PvP is to others. With the possibility of dishonesty comes the chance to make a name for oneself as honest - and vice versa.

Just expounding on this a bit for those who think EVE is all about 0.0 and PvP. It's a lot about that, but not entirely. I am descended from the Lesser-Known Giant Wuss and (though I look over my shoulder a lot on some trips and mash the afterburner key till it squeaks) I still have a great time. image

It was a grinder with very basic componants of a player-driven universe, which were invariably poorly implemented. It also suffered from catastrophic technical problems. It was 'unique' in that it had a decent initial design which could have followed the EVE path - going from initial crap to something of value. It went the other way - initial crap made way for more and more and more crap.

    EvE Online is the best

    - One server where all plays on " no hazzel"
    - Great playerdriven market. ( build on a SAP Eco .. )
    - Great industrial side
    - Great community.

Then we have the CCP people who contra some whiners do listen to the player base
    and the support is good.

O thats right EvE Online are the best space mmo out there.

    Believe whatever you like Rollin
Simple Fact:  Until NGE hit and caused SWG's collapse EVE had less than 1/3 the subscribers it did.  And before CU it had less than 1/4.  Now, post NGE, it has more....  That's not to say that EVE isn't a great game... it is a great game in it's own right.  But I fail to see why people on these forums insist on bashing any game that they don't happen to enjoy.  EVE has a solid game and it is backed by one of the, if not the, best dev teams out there.  They're dedicated and they stick to their vision... I wish more dev teams did.  About the only team I hold in the same regard as CCP is Mythic... and they signed a deal with a devil far far worse than SOE.

As for Grind?  EVE has just as many grinds as any other MMO.  In EVE the grind is for ISK... in other games the grind is for XP.  In SWG your XP was skill related though... ie: yes there was a grind but the grind was raising skills.  It's ok not to like that... I fully understand why some dislike systems that require actual playtime to improve skills.  Personally I prefer them because skill gain just feels more tangible in those.  But I like EVE's system too.

All that said:  SWG was far more *fun* than EVE for a very long time.  It's only since the more recent, and radical, changes that it collapsed.  Yeah it had problems... more than most other games... but despite those problems Post Patch 9 - Pre-CU SWG was better than any other MMO on the market.   It wasn't till CU hit that it really started to nosedive... and it was still 'ok' till NGE hit.  And, as I stated in my original reply:  If CU and NGE had never hit I would still be playing SWG... despite it's flaws.

I have to agree with the poster that said that if the NGE and CU didnt happen I would still be playing SWG.

I love EVE ( in fact my GF would say that SWG was my wife and EVE was my misstress lol) I love how the dev treats their players, I love how the skills are handeled, I love how the comunity interacts, both in and out of combat. THere is the fact that the players have a noticeable impact on the game world.

I also loved SWG. I loved the way the players made most of was needed by the other players, I loved how the skills were handled, the twitch baced flight was good, but being a Freelancer fan I was a bit disapointed. I also loved how the caracters were handeled, from the creation to how highly you could customize your caracter. the SWG pre-NGE was very friendly to role-playing, now its not.

Right now I'm on a wait and see state with SWG, the trader revamp will tell me which game I will continue to play..........EVE or SWG..........
