Actually the gold farmers in WoW don't play in internet cafes they play in their sweatshops which are usually private and/or non-descript places. ok, so most here seem to agree that the reason behind the success of the internet cafes in china is because of economy. and to that, I instantly start to wonder how cheap these cafes really are. If I where to use an internet cafe instead of bying my own computer, then Id loose alot of moeny over time. I'd actually save money for bying my own computer in the long run. so, are the internet cafes where live insanely expensive, or are the cafes in chine insanely cheap?
Its between 25 and 40 yuans and 7.90 is equal to one dollar (average from last month). I don't think it has much to do with the cost of the internet cafe but rather the one time price of a computer. I know that in Korea computer and computer parts are much more expensive than they are in the US. Fewer people in those areas are able to buy a computer due to the large upfront cost. This is of course all speculation.
hey maybe they just like the social aspect of it I am myself spending alot of my time in the schoolcomputers; first and foremost because of internetz (hehe), but also because of the social aspect (there's a core of a handful people at my class that like to stay after school until 00 o clock). when you're bored you walk around watching what the other guys are doing. talking and chitchatting here and there. really enjoyable. make guilds in MMOs and so on. so yeah, maybe there's the social part that comes into play. if you frequent a place over a long period, you're ought to get well known with the owners and the other regulars...
The idea of banning kids from playing online games is deplorable. And the fact that there are actually morons in this thread supporting it is even worst.
Do you think people just decide to start gaming when they hit 18? Can you remeber the first time you started playing a video game, what age you were. How would you feel if some higher power besides your parents took it upon themselves to limit your ability to do what you find enjoyable.
How exactly is a teenager spending his or her time in a cyber cafe with friends a waste of his/her life as another poster said? Is it not much safer to be inside with friends gaming, then outside getting introuble? Not saying if you dont play games you get in trouble, but what qualifies as a valid passtime? If gaming is a waste of your youth, what is it after you become an adult?
Games are a hobby and a career goal for young and old alike, there should be no laws governing how long you can play, nor should there be a law delegating what age you should be before you can play, unless of course it pertains to the genre of the game and not gaming itself.
If your kid is playing games for hours on end, and as a parent you allow it your not a bad parent, if you decide you would rather your kid be inside the house gaming that is between you and your family, shouldnt be applauding the goverment of china for making the choice for you.
Gaming laws wouldnt work in america, mainly because they are fucking ridiculous. Might as well limit the time you can play boardgames and sports while your at it.

They're not banning kids from playing online games. They're banning kids from playing online games in an internet cafe because it is causing trauancy and delinquency which are starting to become serious social problems in china. If the kid can play online games at their homes then the parents can have more control over the lives of their children.. .however internet cafes is another matter which has become a hangout for kids and sometimes gang members which are beyond the eyes and ears of their parents. This is when the government decide to step in.

Next they will ban kids from McDonalds , the Mall, the fucking park. Because kids are gathering and playing their psps, or just skipping class because they feel like it, and the gangsters are gathering.. You got to realize this is just a cheap band-aid fix. These kids get money from somewhere, if they are at the cafes assume their parents know about it, or play some part in them actually being able to go there for such extented periods.

The kids in china will grow up to become more productive and sociable people if they don't sit on their asses 16 hours a day playing mindless online games. I think that law needs to be enacted here in the USA too.
Its the parents job to do that and not the goverments.. Well if you haven't noticed there are a lot of fvcked up parents in this world who don't know jack about raising kids. Any idiot can have a kid but it takes a lot of hard work to raise them well and not everyone is as bright or as dedicated to raising what they brought into this world.

Goverment making sure kids don't group up to be stupid losers because they've spent way to much time in internet cafe's instead of school is one of them. Sorry to break the news. This happens even in the Unitied States of America where many malls and aracades refuse to serve kids during school hours. The police here in the US also have the right to stop/question any kid under the age of 18 during school hours in any areas outside of school.

again, I have to stress that restricting the gaming time of kids wont make them automatically sit down with boring homework instead...
No i don't think kids should be ban in internet cafes... it is a violation of child's right...i believe this is all about reponsible parenthood...parents should guide their children the right attitude when to go to internet cafes... and install to their young minds what and which are the priorities..so if children have these, they less frequently go to cafes.

I'm not advocating totally banning children from accessing the internet but rather I'm advocating that there must be some form of control by the parent over the usage of the internet by their children. This isn't an issue here in the USA because most people use their internet from their homes while in china most kids use their internet while in an internet cafe or internet kiosks, these venue are public places where most likely their parents would have no control over. Like the poster above said, it is like shops to refuse service to kids during school hours in order to minimize trauancy and delinquency.

ditto, seems u know some facts about China.Im gonna tell u some more..
As a Chinese game player(a litle crazy) ,I have wasted years of time wasted during my high school to play games,at that time there not so much online games but it helps to escape from daily life.
The biggest repression of Chinese youth is neither the ban of inl cafe nor their parents, but the education system. How can you imagine the competetion in China where education is considered as the most critical thing in the life and has a polulation over 1.3 billion???China does occupy the greatest manufacturing market of the global but it doesnt mean Chinese are farmer workers suffering from the cruelty and tyranny of the goverments .
i posted i topic yesterday and someone repled me "China farmer",lol, then Geoge w. Bush maybe the whole world would be tremblling if all China farmer workers know how to play online games....

I dont think a simple ban can keep kids away from the inl cafe,as a matter of fact lots of kid still have their own way to access to online games if only they like, coz for familiies in the cities, they are almost the single child and will be easily satisfied with their requirements, while in the country area laws are lack of power to prevent underage to enter intl cafe.
But its target just a provention for social problem not the kids, coz u may cannt imagine wot will happen if ur kiids are staying there with those guys in the smoky cafe, completely no differnce with throwing them on the streets with the gangs. All thety meant is to let kids play games in a heathy way.

China will soon surpass the USA in economic power There is no way with the Dense population problems and overcrowding that will happen, however I guess it will be possible if we keep bailing out any country that even breaks a nail and putting us into further debt. We keep that up Cambodia is going to surpass us.

Ah perfect! A native:) And in that regard, do you think its a good or a bad thing with these internet cafe restrictions? (Its a bit hard to draw a clear conclusion from that post of yours.) And do you know how the other kids below 18 in china are responding?

Not a good thing!but better than nothing done..
Just like US ppl, sometimes,I not so satisfied with the actions of goverment
Its a pity they chose the easy way out,and the responsibilities are on the parents now..
hmm....kids below 18?most of them have to go to school during the day time and can only play games at home, however a few game addictors still skip the school and go to illegal internet cafes (we call it black cafe)to avoid the parents know wot they actually do everyday..Of coz those addictors strongly oppose this ban,but most kids have not to much response coz they are used to play at home or dont play at all

Yes because China is the only nation that censors. Go talk to Howard Stern about censorship and the role of the FCC and the wacked out fines for saying things such as "dirty sanchez" on the radio waves. Or how the religous nuts in this country want to now regulate pay radio such as Sirius now that Howard Stern is no longer broadcasting on public air ways. Please do us all a favor and buy a freaking clue.
