Howdy, Stranger!

It looks like you're new here. If you want to get involved, click one of these buttons!

Enough already with the "What game should I play?" postings.

Guys come on, why can't you research on your own what games you want to play?  Most games have free trials, download them and try them out and see if you like them or not.   Research the gamelist, look at screenshots, read the individual game forums, hell use the freaking search button for once in your lives.

It is really clogging up the site with 10 postings in a roll with some freaking noob asking what game they should play.  Often the poster doesn't even post anything of use that would even give anyone a clue as to what game might work for them.

And if you are going to post these lame threads at least give us the following information:

What system specs do you have?
What type of connection?
Do you like PvP, hate it or don't care?
What type of death penalty do you like/dislike?
Do you mind if it has a lot of instances?
Do you like instant travel?
Do you care about mounts?
Do you like arenas?
What genres do you like/dislike?
What other games/MMOs do you like/dislike?
Do you mind paying a monthly fee?
Do you like indepth character customization or don't mind looking like everyone else?
Do you want to use WASD movement or point and click movement, or don't care?
Do you want a deep storyline, lots of questing or just want to kill things?
Do you want deep crafting, or just gathering mats up and be done?
Do you want different races?
Do you want large areas to explore that take long periods of time just to cross?
Do you want realistic characters and weapons or more Anime like characters?
Do you want a game that has a bunch of raiding?
Do you want solo content mostly or grouping?
How important is in game mail to you?
Must the servers be located in a certain area?
Do you want indepth guild options or don't care?
Do you want a game you can download, or buy a retail box for?
Do you want a game that has gamecards so you don't have to have a credit card?

The list goes on and on.  Any number of the above would at least help.  If you can't spend a few minutes researching and actually typing what you are looking for, why the hell should we spend our time replying to you?

That's fine, I know this is a site about the subject, but at least people can do some research before they post, and spend a minute or two actually saying what they want.   And certainly like some of the people on here don't have to post the exact same question that they asked less than 24 hours eariler.   I don't mean to be mean, I am just trying to say first they should research, and then if they can't find what they want to know, post something a little more indepth than, "ZOMG what game should I play" without any info on what they like or dislike.  Those postings don't do anyone any good.

Maybe there should be a forum category called, "Pick my game for me" or something.  But of course even then we all know that the people that post these type threads aren't going to bother posting there. image

I just think that people that post those "wat games should i play" subject are to lazy to find some for themselves and just expect some1 to tell them wat they should play then they will do research on wat people tell them wat to say which is really stupid and lame if u dont do it urself in the begining.

There already is one. It's called the Role Play Discussion forum for some odd reason. Or it could be the idiots that just post to that forum for some unknown idiotic reason.

In response to the post with the large list of things people should
post when asking "what game should I play" I would like to comment with
    the following.

Instead of people taking all those stats, and information about
themselves, posting it on here, and then asking "what game should I
chose" they should first consider wether any of the replies to the post
are going to be made by themsevles. (Basically, is the thread starter
going to respond to himself with a suggestion).

The simple reason for it is, none of the people that reply are "you"
(you = the person asking) so therefore our opinions, reasons, feelings
and emotions are worthless to you. I think "Game x" is terrible, and
    some others think its great.

If the game has a trial, dont post asking about it, take the trial and
find out for yourself. No trial, read the forums for it, visit the
site, and read the comments in the "ratings" system here on MMORPG.com
If your still stuck after than THEN post. At least try the games, post
what you liked, and didnt like, that way, people on here CAN help, by
swaying your opinion and explaining if your likes and dislikes will be
    affected further into the game.

If you really cant pick, flip a coin. Look at it like a sale in a shop.
You can buy Item A or Item B. Leave it too long without deciding, and
you wont be able to buy Item A or B at all.

They've been doing it here for years.  It's not as if this post
will even stay on the front page long enough for most people to even
notice it and read it.  I especially like the ones who don't even
give you an idea of what they might enjoy.  Obviously, they just
want you to tell them what to play.  I think in other
circumstances they would be called "submissives."  (but we won't
    go there!)  :p

and sometimes we are just looking for additional insight.  I did the trial for ryzom, and was told yeah you could solo...on the beginer island...on the mainland its a little tougher..well after I paid 15 dollars for it...wouldnt mind finding out what people have tried and experienced...sorry.
  • neuronomadneuronomad Member Posts: 1,276

I am not really against those people looking for insights and that actually take the time to think about what they are wanting. But usually that is not the case.  Usually it is just people posting a couple sentences or less pretty much just asking for us to choose for them.  That is not only lame but gets old.   Then when someone actually has a legitimate question about selecting a MMO that would fit their taste it often will get overlooked because people will just assume that it is another one of the many usless threads about the topic.

    Oh me!  Me!

    - Unlimited levels.

    - Unlimited gears.

    - Level caps and gear cap on every zone...so noobs rule nooblands...and in 2 years, old zones still have a point to be done.

    - No raiding, all in solo and/or grouping.

    - New expansion every 3-5 months please.

    - As many races/classes as possible.

    - PvE servers.

    - Zones to reduce the lag.

    - Instancing, because I want the game to test me, not my luck at avoiding ninjalooter004, nor my speed at clicking a rare named spawn.

    - Automated loot system, gimme a managing the loot before I change zones, but don't ask me to click on the corpse and then select an item....zzzz if I want to play Sims, I will.  It also solves all issues, since loot is automatically distributed, so everyone can always get what they want...and if they don't, well maybe someone nice in the group will think of you, or maybe not, either way, you dream and you don't do that looting the corpse thing.  Never got the point behind the need to actually loot the mob.  My DM gives me the loot, he doesn't wait for me to say: I check the loot on the corpse, nope, right away says what we find, unless something is hidden, which then requires some special thing.

    - 1 toon only, the toon may be able to developp every class, but it is always the same toon, yeah the level 95929 crusaders is now a level 12 cleric, so what?  I am working on cleric atm.

    - Grouping is #1 priority, soloing is #2, any other activity fall behind that.

Yeah, that is it for me.  Thanks for asking!  image

I really like the idea of this tread and think someone should be taking notes and making a sticky. For the amount of new people who register here, having this kind of sticky would be valuable knowledge and may make new visitors stay longer. image

Do you want easy or complexity in an MMO?

Do you want an MMO like WoW where it is easy to learn and figure things out. You feel you are making progress by just playing. Or do you want to play a game like Eve where you set your own goals and where skills matter more than level.

Housing? (Don't know if this was brought up)

Do you want a house where you can decorate and store loot, or do only require a bank to act as a mule.

Do you want items to disappear when you drop them?

In some games the item will vanish when dropped.

    Musical Instruments in Game?

I actually really like this question but only a couple games I know this was possible. SWG and AC2

Here's a thought. If you see a thread with a title suggesting something you might not want to read... Don't read it. I know I personally don't feel the need to click every single topic posted.

That's not the point.  The point is that there are people that are asking legit questions that are well thought out and so forth in seeking a MMO to fit their taste, but these tend to get lost among a sea of crap postings.   The point I was trying to make is to those people that are wanting help selecting a new MMO.  Instead of people just posting pick me a MMO, instead giving us an idea of what they are looking for.

I don't mind helping people out that actually take a minute to type out what it is that they are looking for.  I don't think many people here mind helping those people.   But what I do mind is that for ever one of those legit postings you have to wade thru two dozen more that are nothing more than, "tell me what to play" without any insight as to what it is that they might even like.   This is unfair to the others that actually spend time trying to state what it is that they are looking for, because their postings are getting overlooked by the flood of useless postings.

My posting as well as a few others after me in this thread is meant to be a guide for those people that are looking for a MMO by giving them different topics that they can mention, thereby helping us help them.

Good ones, I forgot about Housing and such.   Yeah it would be nice for someone to make a sticky with this topic at the very least.  But then again I doubt the people that post the useless ones that have no information in their request wouldn't even bother reading it.

i think the posible solution to this subject is to make a sticky with the best choices from a poll for example a post named the must play games list and then we pick a few categories like:

Newbie friendly P2P: World of Warcraft
    Newbie friendly F2P: Flyff
    Good PvP/PK P2P: Eve Online
    Good PvP/PK F2P: Shadowbane
    Best Sci-Fi P2P: Eve Online
    Best Sci-Fi F2P: Anarchy Online

etc etc etc etc etc ad infinitum.

I would rather suggest a template that goes something like this (sticky):

Q: What game should I play?
    A: World of Warcraft.

    Q: Are there other options?
    A: Not for a n00b.

    Q: But I'm not a n00b!
A: Then you wouldn't need to ask.

    Q: But I don't like fantasy games.
A: Nothing else is available (for n00bs).

Q: But I already played World of Warcraft.
A: Play some more, until you don't need to ask.

Yeah I think we need to make a MMORPG flow chart that features something along that lines. ;)
