Ultima Online. The only mmorpg that was really a mmorpg and not just a cooperative single player game (cough EQ, cough WOW, Cough SWG... ) Consequence, danger, fun, betrayal, the list goes on & on.
I sometimes miss The Realm. Mostly because of its 2D combat awesomeness that I've not yet seen recreated in any MMO game. Its still around, but its not nearly its former almost glory. But I loved everything Sierra put out back in the day. I think the company pretty much died out when the adventure genre had its death. Come to think of it I really miss adventure games too. Sure theres 1 or 2 decent ones every couple years but not nearly as cool as the oldschool games like Zork and King's Quest.
Well I do not need to miss the old times, I am still playing UO . I realy do wish though that they would start making more games like the old times again.

Originally posted by MaeEye I also miss Asheron's Call 2, I really thought that game was fun and trippy.
Word. A lot of people hated AC2, but I thought that it was an awesome MMORPG. Everything in the game was all so odd and I'll probably never see another MMORPG like it since they all cater torwards High Fantasy. It was certainly a game with lots of things going on for it. It's a shame that it had to be closed down. I blame Turbine and their lack of marketing and crappy AC2 website with little to no information about the actual game.
I miss the goo old time of LoD when I was a totally noob and I did not know anything about games haha, yeah it was very cool to run "Andy" 5 times in the night, gathering a group and go kill Diablo, etc. Those were good times, but I am very happy with the MMO's now days and my next, maybe is going to be GW or DDO, I do not know yet.

I liked AC2 too, but I'm not so sure marketting was the problem as I saw it advertised on fileplanet a fair bit if I recall. I think perhaps more the problem was it's launch and some of it's design.
I miss Nexon's Dark Ages (I know its still there but its gone down hill). I loved attending a totally RP'd mass for an in game god. Going to a class at the university. I loved having students as a monk that I trained, and it all happened in character.
I miss the elections, judges, mayors, and guards. I miss sitting by a rock with my pupils and teaching them how to live through their next trial.
I miss the weddings. Heck I even miss hitting F5 every 30 seconds to resynch my client with the server.
I miss EQ for all the reasons everyone is going to list. I miss getting lost in Blackburrow (I mean really lost they will be finding my corpses down there for years to come. But I swear it was by this waterfall...or was it this one). I don't miss you Fippy Darkpaw you just wouldn't shut up.
I also miss EQOA. I wandering around the world completely lost. No map. No zones. Little villiages scattered around. I miss treking out to the Black Swann Inn for guild meetings because someone was KoS in most cities.
I miss grouping south of Highbourne scared to death that we would pull some of the insanly strong monsters thrown in with the level 10 mobs. I miss stopping to watch the (in retrospect not so spectacular) sunset and how cool that was.
I miss FFXI (the sun set for the last time there for me this month). I miss grouping in the Canyon hoping to some day take down one of those Dhalmels (of course they were like level 12 how little we knew). I miss a little taru named Weee who was in like every group I was in for the first few months. I miss killing Maze Makers while frantically running at the /shouts of GHOUL!!!. I miss the taru /panic animation.
I miss EQ2. I miss being knee deep in the (un)dead in Stormhold. I miss bringing down a giant in Thundering Steps. I miss getting lost in Black Burrow (again). I miss aggroing raid mobs that were just wandering around the overworld (and getting a free copy of MMOs for Dummies mailed to me by my guild afterwards).
I miss Lineage 2. I miss the great guild I met during my month there. I miss being chased by a red while desperatly guiding my guild mates in to my position. I miss doing this on purpose to ambush reds. I miss my hot Orc (I thought this was impossible..mmm green).
I miss DAoC. I miss the cool factor of being a knight and walking into the room with the round table. I miss overhearing politician NPCs discussing world events. I miss that small band of do-gooders that set out to slay dragons and fight for the honor of our kingdom.
I miss WoW. I miss wandering around exploring your world. I miss getting a group of people together brave enough to risk Hogger. I miss trying to find the entrance to Dead Mines. I miss that ship in the cave coming into view for the first time. I miss flying north from Stormwind and seeing that drake for the first time (can it catch me?).
I miss those first days/weeks of a game where its not a pattern yet. No one knows what they are doing and the world seems so real. You will be replaced soon with the "best way" and the "next level" and you can never go back to those days again.
So here is to the good old days! The first days in a game. The days of exploring and wonder.

I ment trippy because of the cool land design and colors etc... Kind of like WoW trippy
I agree . Now that i've tried tons of other MMO's i miss the weird trippy landscape and overall feeling of AC2 also... Before crafting 2.0..where you could craft stuff out of dropped items from mobs. Trying to solo vaults.
Having all that huge world to travel and trying not to aggro the scary dark red mobs...the blood stones that were scary to lowbies.
Goddamnit turbine . should've just let the servers end up like shadowbanes.
I first started with DAoC and played on and off for 4 years. I miss it because it was a game where I could go anywhere in the game world and find a group to adventure with. MMORPG's were new back then and people would rather group than solo. People were also more friendly and weren't like the WoW community or most other leet speaking communities out there.
Now DAoC is just a min/max elitists game, where most would rather solo or do instant dungeons, which weren't around years ago. People have forgotten about the adventure and now rush to the end game, which is RvR. People back then didn't think the game was ONLY a PvP game like most of the community does now. People found the game to be good for RPing, PvE, some quest and raids...RvR was a bonus.
Sadly, there aren't any good games out anymore. MMO communities have gone reclusive. People join in and solo mostly, unless they are on a quest they need help with. After that quest, most groups in most games split up and start soloing again. If there are good guilds in the game, they are usually a bunch of soloers that just chat while they solo or they only group with each other and don't actively recruit in the game. Only on their websites do they recruit, which some people would rather not have to do.
I wish I played EQ long ago, but I didn't and it's too late to try now. I've heard how the community is very reclusive and how they don't adventure anymore. They pretty much stick to the same raid bosses or "best" leveling spots.
My MMO gaming may be at an end. Who knows if the community will ever remember how great it is to level in a group, rather than doing mind numbing quests until max level, mostly alone. For now I just play single player games, since I am forced to play solo online anyways. Might as well play a game that is designed well for a single player, with awsome quests, rather than play solo in a game with Fed Ex and kill x number of monsters to get y quests.
I miss the UO days, and the AC1 days. We wont see games like this again, and if so, hardly anyone will play them. The MMO crowd wants the same game re-done over and over with different graphics, EQ which translates into just about every single mainstream MMO out there now save for a couple.
What's funny is that it's harder these days to find a good MMO that is unique with a big community as opposed to back then. It should be the other way around since there are tons of MMO's now. You see people come here to these boards asking for a new MMO, a new experience. What gives me a chuckle though is that people ask for the SAME exact game they were previously playing.
Bring variety into this genre for crying out loud.

I hear ya. Ultima Online, if it had pretty graphics, would probably be a BIG hit seller now adays. People get bored of quests! Why do we have to have quests? Why cant we just get into the game and have no objective, nothing to direct us? That is how UO was and that is how people got hooked. The freedom was there. You didnt have to go and do quests to level up. You had to just go to the graveyard with a couple of buddies and kill monster to gain skill and also had to keep your eye open for PKs. Sure it was hard, and annoying at times. But these times are fun to think back to. Everything was just so unpredicatable in Ultima Online, compare to all the rehashes out today.
AC and AC2 for the same reason. It was such a differnet MMO compared to every other MMO out today. Sure uniqueness in the old days. When I think of MMOs, I think of the ones that were unique at the time: Ultima ONline, Asherons Call, Everquest, Dark Age of Camelot. Now, everygame just takes what Everquest did and change it here and there a little bit. Why cant we have Asheron Call copies? or UO copies? I guess I just dont get it. Its sad, cause all MMO developers are after today is money. If they werent after money, then they would create a masterpiece with their own concept.

HMM very, very interesting. I like that. I agree, Diablo took 5 years of my life. I spent exactly 2.2 years at my computer =/ I do have some medical problems with my eyes and wrists

Amen. AC was the best game ever! Bloody MMORPG noobs with their crying and whinging have ruined the whole genre! What's with all the games that come out today being so bloody similar, repetitive, boring and easy.

Bring back the UO and AC1 days!!!!!!!! (just with reworked graphics and pre noob / pvp nerfing eras)
What you can do? They are almost gone, just memories.. !

The good player crafted items, the ability to get anxiety attacks when you go mining or hunting (because of player kills)
I also miss the style of UO, never have we seen a game have so much depth as UO had in it's prime days.
I also miss Asheron's Call 2, I really thought that game was fun and trippy.
