A big BIG question

HEY ALL

I'm planning to get into an MMORPG, as I never have before, but I"m really interested. I've been hearing a lot of trashtalk towards games like FF 11, Star Wars Galaxies, Anarchy Online. What is the best MMORPG these days? I'm open for any suggestions.

Well its based alot on peoples taste. The big one seems to be Dark Age of Camelot, but thats getting older now. Most people seem to be waiting for the upcoming ones, ,like city of heroes or world of warcraft. If youre new to it, ,then i guess u might as well try one of the newer ones coming out in a little while, ,and be new to the game like everyone else.

First, I'd forget or at least use other peoples opinion's very lightly about which game is worth it or not. There are so many MMOG's and everybody likes different ones. I'd look through the game list here, see what peaks your interest. Check out their website, read their FORUMS(get a feel of how the community is like and if the game has problems you'd rather not deal with).

If you have any friends who play MMOG's it might be worth it to join them on whatever their playing. I've always found it easier to get into a MMOG when I play alongside a friend. If you know them IRL you can probably convince them to let you try it out before anything also. Good luck!

WAIT FOR WORLD OF WARCRAFT BECAUSE IM SURE THAT IF U GET INTO AND MMORPG RIGHT NOW, WHEN WOW IS OUT YOU WILL STILL BE PLAYING THE MMORPG THAT U STARTED ALREADY BECAUSE THESE GAMES TAKE A LONG TIME TO BEAT SO I THINK THAT WOW IS WORTH WAITING FOR AND WILL BE A VERY GOOD WAY TO START YOUR MMORPG DAYS BECAUSE IM SURE THERE IS TONS TO EXPECT FROM THIS GAME. I HEAR THIS GAME IS REVELUTIONARY TO THE MMORPG GAMES!!!

madjake is very correct.  in order to find the mmorpg that best suites you, you have to check out information about each game (you can find that through mmorpg.com). Then you have to answer many questions:

    1.  What kind of combat would you like your MMO to focus upon? (A player vs. player, player vs. everything, a mix of both, or non-combat: crafting, social, etc.)

    2.  What genre do you like best? (Fantasy, Sci-Fi, etc.)

    3.  What kind of MMO would you like to play? (Traditional RPG, First-Person Shooter, Action, etc.)

    4.  Do you like an MMO that focuses upon Solo play, Group play, or a mix of both?

    5.  How does each MMO you research address the issues that you most hate about MMORPGS? (How do they handle such issues as Camping, Level-grinding, Twinking, Excessive PKing, etc.)

Also, just like madjake said, take it upon yourself to ask other's opinions.  I have found many MMOs through my friends (FFXI, EQ)  I play FFXI right now.  I know what the issues of the game are, but I play it because I have built a small social connection to my online friends, so I tend to have fun in the game despite it's flaws. Hope this helps image

Definitely as has been said DON'T take anyones opinion as gospell! Read the forums, check out the descriptions, have a look at the screenshots, make up your own mind. Only way to go.

Yes, this site has a terrible habit of timing you out. I think the timeout is 20 minutes. So, if you type up a long post, copy it to the clipboard before you hit the Post button. Then if it fails, you can just paste your message back in.

I'll try to answer the questions once more, ill make it short this time :

    1. mix of both but with social interaction so you dont always have to be fighting

    2. Sci Fi (please please dont redirect me to EvE online it doesnt interest me at all)

    3. FPS is a genre I hate, i have to say i like traditional mmorpgs

    4. mix of both

    5. I dont mind em' but i dont know what twinking means -____-

thankyou for asking these questions OkayDoood ::::20::

Anachy online well worth a try.  7 day free trial.  I gave it a shot recently even though I'm not keen on sci-fi rpgs, loved it.  Solid game, good gameplay, lots of options, good graphics and not very buggy.  Players were also very nice, if you asked a question not only did most people give you an answer they showed you the way.

Some of the better looking ones would probably be WoW, EQ2, F11, and UXO. Tthen again as the others have said it's all a matter of opinion. If you are already on a MMORPG, I would also have to recommend staying there until WoW comes out.

Gaming is essentially a past time and a hobby and playing MMORPG's you have to look at this way there are many games out that you may get 6 weeks of enjoyment out of and other's may draw you in for a couple years. It all depends what type of player you are, what interests you have, etc. and the kind of genre you really enjoy ( ex: Fasntasy, SciFi etc. ).

It is wise however for one to form their own opinion about what YOU like and dislike. There are many reads about all games and you need to sift through them and find out who is actually making unbiased comments and who is not. Best to check all the game sites out and get background stories on them all and narrow your decision down that way. Being you are new to the MMORPG market as other's stated I would suggest you wait for the next couple months as some major games are about to hit the market.

Whatever you decide make the decision solely on your own judgement. As i said I know some people say I paid 50 bucks for a game played it for a month, it sucks, they rippped me off. Welcome to the MMORPG world of gaming. You could spend 50 bucks on a crappy dinner in 2 hours, if you smoke you blow that much a week on cig's, and if you go to the bars you definitley blow alot more. With any hobby it can become costly. I have several games I played for a month's time etc. sitting in a closet and yes it is depressing to see that much money wasted but then again if I played them for a month I still consider I got my money's worth because I don't know any place I can go and spend 50 bucks a month and get daily entertainment.

Good luck on whatever you decide but make sure you at least research all your options first.

    Peace

By your answers above, you might like SWG. It seems to fit with your answers. Or, just wait for CoH. Honestly, I don't think WoW fits your answers at all. It's just that people love to hype that game for some reason.

  • MrLilpinheadMrLilpinhead Member Posts: 21
personally im jumpin head first into COH asap....that seems to be the best one for now...but WOW and Lineage 2 are solid choices as well

first of all i have to say people are extremely helpful on this board.

SWG looks awesome i have a friend who plays it and i saw it looks great, but i hear its going downhill. I dont really want to fund Blizzard anymore ive bought diablo, d2, d2 expansion, warcraft 1, 2 and 3 plus 3 expansion then i have starcraft and its expansion. seriously i need to stop buying stuff from them because its scary i get pulled into the game so much its like crack ::::29:: ::::31::

and yeah CoH does look pretty good but it really doesnt look like theres much to do in that game ::::37::

I'm more of a PvP guy, but I have to say that CoH does look very appealing even if it's not a PvP game. From what I'm understanding, there will be plenty to do in the game because it's more dynamic than previous MMORPGs have been. Bascially means, you shouldn't be doing the same stuff over and over again. But we shall see if they will pull this off or not.

  • af666af666 Member Posts: 11

I really do like SWG it looks so nice and i saw it at a friend's house yesterday, but i heard the population for that mmorpg is dwindling thats why i asked is it really going downhill? cause if it is, im not interested, id rather have a game packed with people constantly :) just so i know im playing a popular game.

If someone has never had ice cream are you going to tell him not to try it till a new type of flavour comes out because you tried them all.And what guarantee do you have the new flavour is good.

Everyone has their views.First let me say I think Lineage 2 is junk(there been quiet a long time on my view on this game and finally said it hehe).

WoW no one here even played it so don't even bother waiting for it.

    Play something now!

We all have our views on a game but a good mmorpg to start with is DAoC .

As for SWG population well honestly speaking do you really think a game that bears the name star wars would be totally barren?Thought not.

I left a month ago  and at peak times I stir clear of coronet spaaceport because of the amount of people spamming. It is extremely extremely crowded.Whether I would recommend the game is another matter.

If you never had ice cream before and the ice cream costs $50..... It might be reasonable not to waste $50 on a flavor you might not like. But of course, you're right, you have no idea what the new flavors are going to be like either. So, might as well be hip and wait for the new flavor when everyone else is trying out the new flavor.

I'm glad that you're taking everyone's consideration in choosing your MMORPG. image

It is now time to start one.  Looking at the way you answered my questions, it looks like you fall into the Players vs. Everything category.  This would lead you to games such as Star Wars Galaxy.  You need to buy the game already, because your responses sound like you've already chosen what game you want to play image So go for it...

...the Force is waiting for you. Which side will you choose?

I personally say SWG or AO now. Since CoH will be out soon, I'd just go with the AO trial to see if you like it. Or SWG, but then you'd have to shell out the retail fee. I really don't know which to recommend. Is crafting anything important to you? (SWG) Are hard lvls important? (AO)

On the issue of SWG going down hill, it may be true, but I don't see why. The games only gotten better since release with the addition of plenty of features. (Player cities, mounts, vehicles, etc)

On social interaction, AO has plenty of optional interaction. Community usually has parties, events, etc. SWG has forced interaction, with the entertainers and such.
