I Downloaded The Expansion

reavoreavo Member Posts: 2,173
I downloaded the expansion today to be ready for the Tuesday release date.

The file is only 511 MB.  That's not very big for a game.  I'm kind of wondering about reupping my subscription after looking at the size of the file.  I was going to reup to see the expansion, but if it's not that much to see then I may change my mind.

Has anyone seen or heard how much there is going to be?  I didn't much care for the champion levels because it was always too hard to find someone to do them with.  If it's like that then I may just pass.

That's not the whole game, but you probably already knew that. :p

Obviously that is just the expansion files.  Not even sure if
those are all of them since there are usually patches that go with it.

In any case, if what concerns you are new zones then there is only
one.  The expansion adds a huge dungeon that is, for the moment,
the largest dungeon in any mmorpg.  It is an RvR dungeon set out
in the front.  There are good loot and relics in the
dungeon.  The relics are different than the ToA relics and make
you a marked man on the map.  If you are killed then other people
can pick the relic up and use it.  The relics must stay in the
    front.

Then there is a new race, class, 5 new champ levels, new horses, and new quests.

It's also a 511mb compressed installer. Mythic wanted to keep future expansion packs in digital download form, so they try to keep the download size as minimal as possible. Don't let the filesize put you off. Eve Online for example has been out for over 3 years, has introduced loads of new content and 4 expansions, and yet the actual file size for the whole game when downloaded is only around 550mb.                    *Edit* Ah, you'll need to install Dark Age of Camelot, Catacombs (?) and Darkness Rising before you can install Labyrinth of the Minotaur expansion pack(You'll need to download these serately). I have Dark Age of Camelot+Shrouded Isles, Trials of Atlantis, Catacombs and Darkness Rising installed,  and it's a whopping 3.98GB on my harddrive. Soon to be almost 5GB with LOTM. :D */Edit*

My son and I just restarted on a classic server last week..and our first characters are at lvl 24 and working our way up in RP's in Thidranki.

Would it be worth it for us to install the expansion right away, or should we wait awhile until we get some level 50's?

    Hehe, yeah i knew that.

I was just a little concerned about the size of the expansion.  I've been playing DAoC for a long time, but just quit like a year ago.  I just got tired of the small populations in the newbie zones.  Every once and a while I like to start a new character in a game and it just wasn't any fun in DAoC.

I was hoping that the new expansion would somehow get the newbie zones hopping again.  But from some of the descriptions I've read I don't think they put much emphasis on accomplishing that goal.

DAoC used to be my favorite MMO until the newb zones went dead.  So, I think I'm going to have to pass on this expansion.  :(

Unless you want the pre-order in game item, or want to play the new
race/class, then there is nothing in the expansion for low
levels.  The content is 50 level only, outside of some drop items
and XP.  There is a new item slot, but you need to be at least CL6
for you to have anything to put in it.

As for the starting zones, play on classic.  Moreover, there is
double XP in the original zones so people are out of the TD.  With
the next patch they are introducing a new quest system and new
quests.  Those are low level quests for now.  They have
redone the art of much of the original world.  They have added low
level DF dungeons for players.  They are going to continue with
improving the quest system and redoing the older zones over the next
    year.

With all of that said, in reality, most games over time with have far
barren starter zones.  People get bored of leveling up.  If
you make people group to help the community then it hurts that casual
player.  If you make it too casual friendly then there is no
socialization.  It is a hard issue to resolve.  If you have 7
million customers then this might not be in an issue, but it has been
in every game with 500,000 or less players.  At least DAOC
realizes there is a problem and is trying to work on building the lower
level game back up.  For the moment their plans seem to be
    working.
