Can't help but notice....

Burned my CDs and LE box long ago, but still like to check in from time to time and follow the drama over on the SOE boards and here and can't help but notice....

The worm has turned over on the suck boards.  With the recent bombardment of "new and exciting" ideas (i.e., gardening, beast mastery, genetic engineering), posters are falling all over themselves to lick the feet of the developers returning old crap back to the "new" game and pat them on the back for making the game so much better.  You can definately that less and less "disgruntled vets" are clinging to hope and re-upping their subs to hang around on the boards, and as soon as someone voices a shred of discontent or points out that the vast majority of the crap they are "introducing" was already in the game, the "fanbois" are quick to pounce and point people to the door.

Frikkin FINALLY someone from the dev team has mentioned an approach to an "abandoned" housing purge (The Red Herring Squadron thingy"....Its sounds very cool and fun to watch...But seriously, though.....Who gives a flip at this point?  15K people who still play the game?  Too little, too late, IMO.

"The game is so much better now", "They're on the right track", "bleh be friggin bleh", the hero worship of these devs makes me feel sick and sad for the people still paying for this game.  I honestly believe, that all hope is lost for this game and things have gone so sour, that even the people who were clinging to "hope" have given up on the game...I don't think even Pre-cu servers would save the game.  Its not even a "I'll never use another SOE product again" or anything like that, its simply a matter of "I no longer give a squirt of piss" what happens to this game.

SWG was my first MMO and undoubtedly will be my last...Sure, I still follow the drama...But was rubbed far too wrong with everything SWG related...And hell.....I quit before the CU....

This analagy has been mentioned hundreds of times but SWG for me is definately nothing more than a car crash that is backing up traffic for a mile....All you can think to yourself as you are waiting is..."damn I wish they'd hurry up and clear this crap up so I can get on my way"....You can't pull your eyes off the wreck out of morbid curiousity....

Most people waiting in the traffic, however, have decided either take the first offramp or drive over the median, and find an alternate route....image

you have to place yourself in the shoes of those STILL playing.

There is NO real playerbase, there really isn't anything to do, so people are excited that they will have new content to GIVE them something to do.

However, it seems that most of the playerbase over there missed the disclaimer Helios wrote:

Implementation or scheduling is neither guaranteed nor implied.  This is simply a "Request For Comments".

Exactly. It's a ploy to keep people appeased until the holidays are over, and to hope "they tell their friends" and improve sales before for the holidays are done. That's all this is, it's just a ploy.

It's the Stockholm Syndrome of gaming ..... love your abuser after being in their clutches long enough.  They really do care about you, it's all those people who say nasty things about them that are REALLY wrong.

Yes, because that demographic never cared about combat. Pre-cu, cu, nge, doesn't matter. So if they do get back this stuff, they'll return.

    In theory.

If all you played SWG for was Tamagochi on steroids, then you'll love the new improvements.

Here's a funny thing. Majority, as evident from population drop, didn't play to be some GCW warrior. They played for their own saga. Just like people play every single MMO for their own reasons. You get traders, who don't get a single level, never go into combat, and spend 24/7 of their game time trading stuff. You get farmers, who do nothing but kill for loot. You get pvp zealots ggktnxbye noob. You get carebears, roleplayers, posers, eBayers, instance raiders, crafters, item, badge, reward collectors, and more.

NGE tried to typecast gameplay style, and as such failed. A game cannot impose HOW you play. This is where the void of content in SWG currently comes to life. There are 3 options. A) Grind 1-90, B) PvP for ranks, C) Decorate your house. Those are currently the only things that give a reward. Crafting is not included, since it's redundant. You can do it, but there's no reason. It's like fishing. Sure, you can show the fish or something, but it's separated from mechanics.

Adding CH brings back the beastmasters, who spent their time roaming around the galaxy, messing with their pets.

Of course, tying eggs to drops is a huge mistake in this respect, since it fails to address the original concept, and replaces taming with loot.

I have no idea where you get this idea that people will return.

First off, NONE of this stuff will be implemented.

Second, for argumement sake, if they did ..... the VAST majority of people are so pissed off at $OE and $LA that they would never give returning a momentary thought for anything less than preCU. Many refuse to play ANY $OE game because $OE has earned the reputation of radically changing the game thus making everything you had previously done moot.

An exceedingly limp theory as time ticks away...I truly think that day by day, people are caring less and less....Love or hate SOE, how many people would really return for classic, Pre-cu servers?

I think SOE knows that the longer they can hold out, the less and less resistance they will receive from Pre-NGE fans simply from those people crying out for will simply have moved on with their lives...

I don't know Shayde nor have I ever exchanged words with him, however having lurked here for so long and reading his posts, I get the sense after his thread on going back for the vet trial, that he has given up hope and no longer gives a crap....And I think the vast majority of old-skool pre-cu vets are going this route.

They can reinject old stuff back into the new game as innovative and exciting, but anyone who knows better and with the backbone to call the devs on it, has long sense left the forums (SWGs), and those left over there are immediately pounced on and told to GTFO...

Ugggh... This whole situation drives me nuts...

    NGE hits.... Players leave

They destroy the game for the NGE citing it will be easier to code and add stuff in... They ask for 6 months to finish... 12 months later they are asking for more time to finsish...

    Players Leave

They remove profession after profession first citing its too many to balance, then saying they were never starwarsy or iconic enough.

    Players leave

It seems we are now at rock bottom, and they are now realizing that oops.. They made a mistake.. So lets add stuff back into the game... At what point do you just say we screwed up, and go back to what the majpority of the players liked, and fix it from there?

If they were just TRULEY using the NGE engine because it was a solid base tobuild off of, then there is NO reason for them to say this and that wont return to the game. It makes no sense...

I truley beleive they never had any intentions of going after the WoW subscribers.. I DO beleive that is how they sold the changes to the game to LEC, all the while trying to make the game into what the Devs like to play / wanted.

Had they just switched over like they claim for a solid base, then they should be able to add everything that was fun back into the game..

They lied then... They are Lieing now...

They can add this stuff back into the game.. They just dont want to, and im guessing is they dont find it fun.. They ask for feedback, and only implement it if they have fun with it.

As for the people who say they are doing a great job.. More power to ya..

I think in many ways that has to do with one simple thing... I don't think that anyone who left and never came back, really knew how devestated the servers are (at least the vast majority of them).

I play EQ2 with my GF, because she has a lot of friends there and wants me to play sometimes.  So we have Station Access... Which of course allows me to log into SWG.

So everytime someone would post here about how the population wasn't that low, or said don't take screen shots at 2am or.. said it was on an upswing.  *I* could log in and look for myself.

Now seriously a screenshot at 2am on Starsider the day before Pre-CU would still have had a TON of people.  I am totally serious when I say...  Almost every planet I land on.. I am either the only one.. or at most there may be 5 people.  The other 4 to 5 people are not really doing anything.. don't want to group... heck maybe they are just like me and came over from EQ2 and are just shaking their heads.

This all of course is on Starsider where I played.  I don't check many other servers.  However, Starsider is one of the few servers that gets up to "medium" often on the list.

The biggest batch of players I have ever found is Mos Eisley.  There can be 20'ish to almost 50 people there... But they never leave there.  If you've never really seen the game look like this... and then log in, I think you would pretty much just give up.

Mythic fought classic servers for a long time... Yet they never let the overall server population look like this before they put them up.  Altho I'd almost say it was close... because they had dropped from 40 to 60 thousand online worldwide to an average of 10 to 12 thousand before they did it.

They had less servers and most had been clustered first.  So if you think of that same population spread over (think its around 25 servers) you get an idea why SWG looks so dead.

    Sorry for the ramble...

I just think when you log in.. it really changes your perspective or hope.

The last time I logged in my last comment was...

This is sick... This is just F'in sick what they did to this game.

*edited for some grammer that made less sense than the NGE*

They just don't get it at all. I don't understand how you let everything enjoyable in a game be destroyed. I use to have so much fun playing and made some many friends, but  SOE ruined and killed something so unique that people still mourn it's lost.

    And then?

No content, no improvements, no patches, no nothing. No mustafar, kashyyyk, no new weapons.

CM dot wars, 98% of population running between dath outposts and village, bots camping Aakuan cave and Nyax.

99% of items are junk, the only things that sell are the perfect stat weapons.

Remember, bringing back pre-cu wouldn't bring in new players. It would only bring back a few of the hardcore who know everything about everything.

In about two weeks DWB and geo caves would be camped into oblivion with 10 people fighting over spawns. At the same time krayt graveyard would be overrun with master swords/master docs and mrifles.

The rest, might as well not exist, since it would be of no use.

Market would consist of grenades and grinding armor, getting increasingly better as resources spawn.

In 3 months tops, the population would fall to 10% since people would, for the last and final time realize, that SWG is gone. The remainder would be the hardcore, the people who always stood on the brink of the community, fight clubbers, DWB and Blacksun grinders, 10+ account holders.

Bringing back pre-cu would make the game a grind till you drop Jedi race.

Nostalgia... Always better than you remember.

    mh, interesting points you got.
i think the problem with us vets is, that we all connect that time with the community mainly. and that will never come back (not in the same way at least).
on the other hand, some rumors (sigh, rumors, rumors, rumors....) stated, that in case of pre-cu servers, these would be debugged and the new content added to them.

so yes, how many people would actually return, and stay?

And then after a brief period you would leave, as you encounter the worst pre-CU code ever run by the SWG team ... code maintained and tweaked by people who don't believe in the game design and don't really know much about the original code.

That's just the harsh reality.  SOE has dug a hole that there's no way out of, not for them anyway.  Hand the whole thing over to somebody with a semblance of ethics and competence, give them a few months to straighten out the mess, there's a playable product in the pre-CU code that I'd come back for .... but Smed's team will never find it.

Funny thing is I see that type of post about almost all mmo's that still exist.

Most everyone of those games I never had a problem with that.  My PA talked me into going to DWB a couple times and yes it was camped... as well as some other place they got me to go.

The way I played was... mostly I was a resource gatherer.  Well everyone was selling stims and buff packs.. so I sold pet stims.  I did missions for money (see I actually enjoyed doing that..)

I had literally tons of credits.. and if I wanted armor or weapons I bought them.  From my perspective they never seemed expensive /shrug

I played a Master Smuggler and loved it.. while all I heard on forums was how the profession sucked and needed a revamp.  I made spice.. I sold spice.. tools and I sliced mission terms when I did missions.

When I wasn't doing missiions or hunting resources I had my BE out gathering samples.  I probably made more selling pets (mostly decorations) than anything I did in the game.  In fact I think I spent most of my time experimenting with multi generation dna samples trying to create the perfect pet.

So ya from my perspective.. I would go back.

However, beyond Hanse and one or two other people.. I agree the current dev teams couldn't program Pac Man or space invaders.. let alone an mmo.

I'm split in a few directions when I think about SWG.  I want to be one of those fanboys, because at least in their happy little world they're, well, happy! And they are enjoying being immersed in the Starwars universe as I once did.  Unfortunately I get my back up on principle at times, and I just can't get over the fact Lucasarts/SoE made such a drastic change to a live game without concern for their subscribers.  I don't like hearing how they are going to be re-inventing old content that was once removed. I don't want to accept the fact it's an MMO/RPG/FPS when it was just fine as an MMORPG.  I laughed hard when I heard they were adding back in positions such as prone and kneeling, as if it was some large joke they were ever removed in the beginning.

    But I'm not bitter. :)

Well, maybe just a little. Sure I put in a lot of time in the village only to see it poof before I was a jedi.  I also enjoyed making up a CL80 jedi and kicking backside to CL90.  I don't mind so much because I had fun in the NGE for a while, until I ran out of things to do and I realized I had a lot more I could do prior to the NGE.  Christmas 2005 was tolerable due to SWG.  I  played my jedi, who was exploring mustafar and having a lot of fun soloing. It was a great way to kill time in-between preparations for the holidays.  So thank you LA/SoE for that much.

My happiest days were honestly and shockingly in May of 2005, just when the CU hit.  I accepted it and loved it.  I'm a two-boxer. two PCs, Two accounts, in every MMO I dedicate my self to.  I could two-box fine with CU and pre-CU.  NGE makes it too twitchy of a game to even consider it.  Although with the new locking it's possible, I just stopped caring enough to attempt it.  I have two SoE all access accounts, it's not about lacking in ability to do it. I just don't care enough about the game anymore.  I'm confused half the time as to what is broken and what works. and I'm Pissed I don't get my Special Edition glasses anymore on new accounts I make!  that was a reward from the collectors edition, and it used to be that any character i made on that account got three really cool glasses.  No more.

I look at SWG now and I see a growing trend forming in multiple MMOs.  Painfully I must tip my hat to Everquest 1 / DAoC/World of Warcraft for it's creation.   It  Doesn't matter what name you give it:  Alternate Advancement points/Achievement points, MasterLevels, or Talents: it's all a layer on top of your character meant to make you more powerful in certain areas.  And it's currently the hot thing to do in MMO's apparently.   I like the concept just fine, I just roll my eyes seeing SWG blatently rip WoW off with a bit of EQ2 thrown in for good measure.  Not only is it a copied concept, but it's not really a layer on top of your normal character as it is in other games. They've stripped the various professions down to skeletons, making it essential to even take their "expertise" system seriously.  I wanted more from my Star Wars experience to turn into a clone of other MMOs.

That's it for me. :) All access is here to stay (especially with Vanguard on the horizon), but unless something drastic changes in SWG, I'm sticking with EQ/EQ2/Planetside as my fix.
